Over at FOX's site it looks like the majority of people (all 12) have chosen this as the 'Alternate' site..
Being new here and a little skeptic after some of the rumours I heard that whent on in the 'buffy fan sites'.
I was wondering if haken and tieka, (and anyone else involved heavily with this site)would be willing to tell us a little about themselves..

It's not really my place to respond, but your request strikes me as a little odd.

It's great that everyone loves this site. Not sure what you mean about the Buffy rumors.

Not sure why you're asking Haken to cough up personal info.

Something smells fishy!

Has YOUR mom seen Firefly, lately?

A big ditto to what Succatash said. I love this site, so let us leave it's creators personal info personal.

You invest time, make friends, in a certain site, the last thing you want is the moderator to be some sort of hidden hitler.

Why is it wrong to ask someone about themselves?

Just my 2 Cents.

Haken is a mysterious character indeed. Little is known about his past, only that he comes from 'parts unknown' and is believed to be immortal. Its considered unwise to ask anything more. Those that did, well, no one really knows what happened to them. I do share your suspicions however. It seems that all Haken's efforts programming and working to keep this site up are all a part of his diabolical plan to turn us all into Farscape fans. Maybe you'd like to join my new resistance front?

Fair point - but it's still up to Haken as to what he divulges. All I know about him is this:

He's created a site which I can only describe as a labour of love, and everyone's responded appropriately. I've seen no trolls, virtually no nastiness (a little bit directed at Fox, but not nearly as much as I believe they deserve ) - even if he doesn't respond to you in person, which he likely will, believe us other folks that hang around the site.

This is a good place to be. And thank you, Haken, for making it for us.

As SergeantX once said, though not in this thread, Haken is both a gentleman and a scholar.

And that is enough for us.

And we are a damn fine bunch of people round these parts, if I do say so myself. Set a spell.

This is what scares me..:)
I don't pull my punches, I would rather have a lively discussion with a crack addict, then a lovely quiet talk with a preacher.
I hate all forms of censorship, UNLESS all other ways to stop someone from abusing another rights have been taken..

I've changed my mind. I think Haken should publish his life story.

If he is going to provide this site to us for free, it is only fair the he tells us personal info.

I am scared too, wondering if Haken is a "Hidden Hitler." It is very possible, and I think we all need to learn more about Haken.

What if we invest a lot of time into this site, but it turns out that Haken is bad? I cannot take this chance.

In a million years I would have never figured this was an issue for the same reason that I know nothing about the people who make the TV series or any of you who come to my site.

Don't you think "Hidden Hitler" is a bit harsh? Let me outright tell you right now--I'm bad to the bone.

And, last time I checked, no one has invested more time, energy, and resources in this site than I have.

Here's three simple rule that this site goes by:

1. This site is private property for the same reason your home is a private property. As such, I can pretty much do whatever I want for the same reasons you can do whatever you want in your own home.

2. Visitors are welcome because we're having one big extended party to watch and enjoy Firefly.

3. This is a free country. You have a choice. I have a choice. Everyone knows where the door is. And for the same reasons why visitors can come to your home and you can refuse entry or kick them out of your house, I can do the same for the same reasons.

Having said that, I don't see what the big deal is. Don't ask. Don't tell. And just enjoy the party while it's happening.

In a previous life, Haken was a history professor, obviously, and this is why I respect him so much.

Because we don't and shan't know personal info about each other, I suggest we make up catchy lies. For instance, I heard that Haken makes really great burritos.

Or would that be burritoes?

Not, me personally, but i think you could find out just about anything about Joss, or Tim, (or even kiba)
Me.. my name is Kerry Jackson, I'm 32 years old, live in Edmonton, Canada, and I work as an Electronic Engineer full time, and a DJ part time..

Ever have a small party at your house, everything goes great untill the 'really HUGE PARTY' down the street gets shutdown.. next thing you know you have 200 people coming to YOUR house looking for a party?

I knew from the start what you can do..:)
but what do YOU consider bad behavior.

Whenever I used to go to a house party (many eons ago), I ALWAYS knew who the owner of the house was. In this case I have no idea and it bugs me.

At this point, I feel a little obliged to quote that famous quote, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth." Even if Haken has Hitleresque tendancies (and I'm sure that's a big if) as long as the don't show up in the message board trying to convert us, WHO CARES?

Near as I can tell, he's worked very hard to provide an excellent site with lots of quality material and good information. I'm sure running this page isn't free, and anyone willing to dish out some coinage for other people to enjoy can't be all bad.

In the end, I don't care who you are, I'm here to enjoy myself, learn more about the show, and have a good time interacting with a small group of similar-minded individuals who have at least one thing in common with myself - an undying love-affair with Firefly.

So, Hippydog, I've read many of your other post on the official website, and being new to this one myself, I think your skepticism is a tad bit unwarrented. It's not impolite to merely ask the sitemaster to reveal info about himself, but the fact that he chooses not to shouldn't hold any sway in whether or not you return to this board, and have fun like anyone else.

If events lead you to dislike this board, and you choose not to return, well, you'll be missed, but not forgotten. Honestly though, I can't imagine it would come to that. Maybe this might help:

:pours hippydog a potent drink...

Sit back, relax, ignore my spelling errors, and have a good time.

-The SpAz

Edited to add: I've been to many house parties in the past, where I didn't know the owner, and I always had a great time. And if I met the owner later, they were always very cool.

this statement was not meant to infuriate the jewish people, German, nor members of the KKK, it was simply the easist way to say what I wanted to say. (and it had a nice flow to it..)

But I see now I was wrong and Evil, and now retract all statements related to hitler.. I simply was refering to some boards I was on where I failed to "get to know" the moderator and regretted it later..

An EE. My brother is an EE. And I majored in it for a couple of years before I switched to something a bit more fun (heck...if I'm gonna sit in front of a computer all day doing CAD work, might as well sit it front of it doing things a bit more interesting...not saying what you do is boring.). And Edmonton is cool, always wanted to visit that huge mall you have over there and ride those rollercoasters.

I've seen it too, which is why I started this place. The master plan was to create a place where the members of the community will govern themselves and collaborate on buidling a community that they wanted and I only poke my nose into the community's affair if things really got out of hand.

I was expecting Firefly to last at least a few years so that I can construct this site over time as the community grows. The cancellation of the series really mucked things up because this site is only half finished. My notes are pages long as to what I wanted to do with this site. And since technology wasn't an issue because I wrote all the code, the only thing working against me was time and real life. Suffice to say, if you're worried about me being a dictator of some sort, don't. I really don't have time to go and read every single message or to keep track of what everyone does on the site. I'm sure if things start getting out of hand, someone will email me.

Besides, one of the things I wanted to add to the forum was a way for members to handle trolls themselves through a demerit system. Kinda like three strikes from three differnt users and your post gets moved to Troll Country.

Point is, I wanted to build a fansite that's beyond the standard fansite. That's the goal. What the commnunity does with what I build is up to them. And I believe at some point, as in real life, the community will reach somekind of natural equilibrium and manage itself.

Anyway, that's the plan. Cancellation sucks, doesn't it?

Quote:

Hey, I kinda answered that and didn't even know it. Again, I trust those at the party and the 200 people crashing will have some sense and realize that its in their interest to behave and let the party last as long as possible. Otherwise, everyone goes home. And no one really wants that, right?

Quote:

Whenever I used to go to a house party (many eons ago), I ALWAYS knew who the owner of the house was. In this case I have no idea and it bugs me.

But why does it bug you? We go through life not knowing so many things that we should, while ignoring things that we shouldn't. Things are simply "is" and the only thing that you do know for sure is yourself and what you want.

If you behaved at the parties you went to, then it shouldn't matter who was throwing the party. If you liked what you see, you stay. And if you didn't like what you see, you leave. That's freedom.

Like you, I'm against censorship. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be on the web. I truely believe in the free flow of information on the web. But along with this openness comes responsibility and accountability. A lot of people leave those at the door when they get on the net. That's probably where I draw the line.

Everything we say or do has consequences--good or bad. The minute someone becomes irresponsible on this site and begins to cause harm to others, that's when I step in. Because it's my resposibility as a site owner to prevent that as much as possible. It's the best I can do short of shutting down the site. That'll be a real bummer.

Not exactly a solid answer for you, but it's the best one I can provide at the moment.
