Hey, as a newcomer to both Firefly and BSG, I'm sure you guys already know this, but I'll post it anyway.

My friend lent me the first season of BSG after I heard it was voted one of the top 10 TV dramas of the year by the AFI. I figured I oughta check it out. I've seen Serenity, and own FIrefly (but have yet to see all of it), but I didn't watch it when it originally aired.

SO there's my backstory.

Anyways, I was watching the first episode of the BSG miniseries last night, and early on they showed a bunch of ships flying past...and I coulda sworn I saw one that looked just like Serenity. So I rewound and freeze-framed it, and lo and behold, this was what I found:

I thought that was really cool. For anyone who hasn't seen BSG, they also steal some stuff from Firefly, such as the quick camera movements and zooms. It's a cool show, but it's no FIrefly.

Anyways, just thought I'd share that.

Well, you should watch the entire season 1 and half of season 2. BSG really grows on you. I remember starting seeing it after i'd seen firefly and wanted something more good stuff. In the beginning i didnt think much of it. But as i've seen all that has been made so far i really love that show. Sure, it still doesnt match firefly (but hey, what does?). Still a very good show.

I will. Oh, no, though, another series. I'll never get out of the house. Fine by me. Need something to fill the void.

Lol, I watched enough of last summer's SciFi Channel reruns to know I absolutely loved the show, and bought the DVD with about 5 or 6 episodes still to watch. Now I'm rewatching the whole series with my brother, but it's hard to find time to watch it. I can't wait to finish, though!

Well, the original series is from the 70's. However i've heard its quite different and i have never seen it. Personally from what i've heard, the new one sounds better.

The show is running right now. Season 1(2004 i think) + the miniseries (2003) is avalible in a box set. first 10 episodes of season 2 has aired, and the next 10 will air after newyear.

Season 3 is confirmed. I belive that will start after summer '06. Hope this helps :)

It was 1978 when the old show came around, and I believe it only lasted for one season, maybe two. I have to admit, I liked it...still do. Sure, the special effects were cheesy, but that's what we had for the late 70's, early 80's. It starred the likes of Dirk Benedict (Faceman from the A-Team), and Lorne Greene, and Jane Seymour was even on it for a few episodes. I've seen some of the new BSG, and yes, the special effects are better...much better, however I have problems getting past the fact that they turned both Starbuck and Boomer into girls, or that uh...perhaps this is spoiler territory...

Select to view spoiler:

That Boomer is a cylon!!

Perhaps I should take ya'lls advice and just sit and watch for a spell...perhaps it'll grow on me. Especially since they're giving shout outs to our beloved show!

At first I avoided the new battlestar Galactica because I had liked the the original battlstar Galactica, but once itunes started offering all the new BSGs for downloading into the new video ipod...I downloaded the whole mini-series plus season 1 and season 2.

I watched them all. My opinion of the new BSG is that its GREAT/WOMDERFUL....its so much better than the original BSG to the point where I would gladly forget that the original even existed.

The characters are awesome, and the stories are thoughtfully put together, and the visuals just keep you wanting more. The New BSG's "Starbuck" is my hero!!! The new Apollo is better than the old one, and the new Boomer is also a better character than the old one, even if she is living a tragic life.

At 1st I was angry that they made Starbuck and Boomer women instead of men like the were in 1978, and I was annoyed that in this new BSG, they made colonel Tigh a weak, old, bitter, drunk. I was also not amused that in this new version of BSG, Zack had already died, but now that I have watched the whole thing, I think that the people who put the new BSG together, seriously know what they are doing, and the show is better than the old one could ever be.

I love the fact that the President of the 12 colonies is aboard the Galactica, I also find it interesting that the Cylons believe in God, and that Baltar is stuck with that Cylon woman in his head....good twist of the story.

The new BSG is exciting, scary, dark, thoughtful, relaxing, and just about the best bit of sci-fi on television right now.

The difference between the old BSG and NEW:

Old - Starbuck is a cigar chomping guy with an additude and really bad lines.

NEW- Starbuck is a cigar chomping woman with plenty of additude, and she's smart, loveable, unstable, and the best fighter pilot in the fleet.

OLD - Boomer is just some black fighter pilot that hung around Starbuck.

NEW - Boomer is an asian female, Raptor pilot that doesnt know she's a cylon and there are copies of her everywhere; her role is tragic.

OLD - Colonel Tigh is a dignified 2nd in command to Adama. His roles is rather empty.

NEW - Colonel Tigh is a drunken, old, weak, fool who cant stand Starbuck, and he has a loud-mouthed wife, and he's always drinking from this flask that he keeps on his person.

OLD - Apollo is a handsome son of Adama. He's a fighter pilot, he's compassionate, and he makes great speeches.

NEW - Apollo is arrogant and somewhat a "daddy's boy" but he's strong and a good fighter pilot and is NOT good at speeches.

OLD - Adama is a good leader. he's thoughtful and wise.

NEW - Adama is a good leader. he's angry, and does not run away from a fight. He makes harsh decisions sometimes, and he holds grudges.

OLD - The famous Commander Cain is a "Patton" like character that commands the famous Pegasus battlestar.

NEW - This Commander Cain is "Admiral Cain" and she is a woman, and there is nothing famous about this person, or her shipload of thugs, and I hate her.

OLD - Boxy is a lovable kid, so lovable that when the Cylons were in the process of destroying all the 12 colonies, some soldiers took some time off from defending the colonies to help boxy get over the death of his "daggit" The kid was so loveable that he even got his own theme song in the orignal BSG soundtrack.

NEW - Boxy is a depressed kid who lost both his parents...all the people on the Galactica did was give him a cookie and told him to sit down and shut up and you never see the kid after that.

OLD - Baltar was some kind of government offical that who had hammered-out some kind of peace deal with the Cylons, which allowed the Cylons to wipe out the entire fleet, and led the way to the fall of the colonies. Baltar was a cartoon character.

NEW - Baltar is a well known scientist, who is a womanizer, and he's also very much into his own ego...his mistake is that he hooked up with the wrong woman who just happened to turn out to be a cylon.

If any of you havent bothered to watch the new BSG, i say go out and get it. start with the mini-series first, and watch everything in order.

Besides Firefly/Serenity, the new BSG is the best sci-fi I've enjoyed all year, and I can't WAIT for season 3!

Somebody may have put this in one of the previous replies, my computer won't load them for some reason. Just wanted to add that Serenity makes a cameo in BSG, but the Galactica also makes a cameo in Serenity. It's decked out as one of the big Reaver ships, or at least one of them looks an awful lot like Galactica.

I just wanted to toss in my expression of love for the new BSG. Interestingly, whether intentionally or not, it owes a lot to Joss's style of television writing, i.e., building up tension through character relationships that have plot consequences, sometimes many episodes down the road. BSG's characters are complex, and like Joss's, they each have an agenda, which can't be reduced to simple good guy/bad guy TV archetypes.

Another point to be made is that I think BSG might just be the wedge to bring Firefly back to TV. If BSG continues to gather critical acclaim and to build a crossover audience for thoughtful sci-fi, then maybe the powers-that-be will take a second look at Firefly, which really is BSG's spiritual predecessor in many respects.

The new BSG IS VERY addictive. I went into expecting to hate it....I just wanted to pick it apart, but I found it to be the most engaging of all shows.

The people who love the old Starbuck and Boomer...get over it. The original Starbuck had no real personality except for the cigar-chomping and the bad jokes, and neither did the original Boomer, and even Colonel Tigh in the orginal had no real personality. The Starbuck of the new BSG is loaded with personality, and so is Boomer and her other copies, and even Tigh, who is a drunk, is much more colorful, and engaging than the original Tigh.

The best change of all in the new BSG is the Cylons! They are amazing, and they have a religion, and a plan!

The one thing that was bothering me as I watched this new show, was that the BSG group was trying to act like a family, which I thought they totally failed at, but once the Pegasus showed up with that boat load of thugs, and once they showed how mean they were, I finally got that the people on the Galactica had indeed formed a family, and a pretty good one at that. God! I hate admiral Cain!

The Cylons may have been mean, and they may have wiped out the human colonies, but the concept of rape is new to them, and it made my blood boil knowing that some of the Pegasus crew raped a Cylon... a whole new low for the human race. I hope the Galactic blows the Pegasus, and their evil crew up during the next 10 episodes of season II.

Sorry for all the spoilers.

BSG is the mutts

I don't knw about it rubbing shoulders with firefly though. I felt BSG had everything firefly had bar the warmth.

that for me is what i love about firefly, the warmth of the characters. It's like i realy feel drawn to them. for example kaylee, now she if a fine looking woman, but the lust which as a red blooded male, i should feel is not there. Why, because she feels like, well family.

I don't want to be a nerd, this kind of devout love seems bordering on it. but dammit, that show makes me feel warm inside.

I am drunk on precious lovely booze!! and i love you all. My fellow browncoats. Mr Joss. The lovely cast. Dammit i love you all.

Still, I have no qualms with the 'reimagining' of BSG, and I think it's probably the best sci-fi show on TV right now.

The Mini-series is $15.00. Its only 4 episodes...2 of them are about an hour, and the other two are 40 minutes each.

Battlestar Galactica, Season 1 has 13 episodes, and its $25.87 for the whole season, or $1.99 per episode.

Battlestar Galactica, Season 2 partial, is only $19.90 for 10 episodes, or $1.99 per episode.

You can download them into your new ipod video along with Firefly and Serenity.

I found this nifty program on the internet that enables you to burn your DvDs straight into your ipod. I have every Firefly Episode in it, and when Serenity comes out, I'm going to continue my software piracy endeavors, and burn it into the ole ipod also.

Did you watch the whole thing? Because the first half of the miniseries, up until the whole Cylon-apocalypse stuff, is pretty dull. After that it picks up.

There are some problems and missteps in the first few episodes (but hell, even Firefly had that problem to an extent, remember Bushwhacked?), but like Firefly you'll be completely hooked halfway in the first season.

Oh, but do yourself one favor - the sixth episode, called "Litmus" - just skip it. Other than that, yeah, go on and give it another chance.

Hehe. I just went and watched the part with the firefly going past the window. I love it! I had no dea what Firefly was when I first saw the new BSG pilot. That rocks.

The original series pilot was just on sci-fi on Thursday morning. Old BSG mini-marathon from 8 AM to 4 PM.

I recorded the pilot (3 hours) and "The Living Legend" (2 hours) which is the old series Battlestar Pegasus returns episode(s). Just bumped the ReplayTV recorder to 20 hours for BSG so the mini-marathon on Tuesday of the last 8 eps of the new series doesn't overwrite em.... Guess they are letting people get ready for the next episode after newyears.

I have a feeling Firefly was heavily influenced by one of the Original Battlestar episodes.

There is an episode where Appollo lands on a "frontier planet" complete with Cowboy Hats and Six Shooters. The Evil Mayor is kept in office because no one can out shoot his main henchman.

Select to view spoiler:

Turns out the henchman is a deranged Cylon.

I loved the Original BSG when I was a kid, and it still brings back good feelings of nostalgia.

But, the New BSG Absolutely Rocks.
