"Midshipmans Hope" by David Feintuch.

Don't get too attached to anyone other than the one main character. Every time you think "OK, this is a main plot guy who's gonna be around a while", WHAM! In any other book series I've read these are the kinds of guys would still be around in book 15 and it's only the first of 6 books...
