I have a CD-quality rip of the Firefly theme from Serenity. This is the much sought-after solo guitar piece from the end credits of our BDM.

(Edited to add links) The rip is a 16-bit, 44.1Kbps, stereo file. It's available as a WAV, or as high-quality MP3 or WMA format files. These may be downloaded here: http://www.savefile.com/files/6470674 (wav, 9MB) http://www.savefile.com/files/9246383 (mp3, 1.3MB) http://www.savefile.com/files/7245694 (wma, 1MB)

This would make a nice addition to your Serenity soundtrack, or to a Firefly soundtrack CD!

As for where I got it... um, I used my time machine to bring it back from Dec. 20th... yeah, that's it! (Bet you didn't know I had a Delorean, didja?)

That was quick...

I'm still doing my test d/l on it!

I think you'll find the quality is pretty high -- I had to play around with the conversion tool, but eventually I got a good result.

Yes, isn't it sweet? It was a nice little "cookie" for the fans. Too bad you didn't catch it in the theater, but it'll be there on the DVD.

There are zillions of apps that do this, from standalone converters like LAME to utilities built into other programs. For example, there's one in the windows Sound Recorder accessory, I think, although it's not a very good one.

I've done one using Nero (the CD/DVD burning program). I'm putting it up on savefile now... and here's the link: http://www.savefile.com/files/9246383

It's a 192kbps, high quality stereo mp3, and much smaller (1.3MB).

DonCoat:

Merci beaucoup. I have been one of those begging for this particular track since the movie's release. Ballad of Serenity is such a beautiful piece of music, and this accoustic and dobro guitar duet is the best version to date. The entire piece is too long for a ringtone (54 secs) since my service will go to message waaay before the bridge, when the dobro comes in.

So, I cut it down to ~30 secs by trimming off the first verse (sacrilege, I know). I used the free WavePad ( http://nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html) and uploaded it to http://gallery.mobile9.com/uploader/244949/balla0529.mp3 (that link may only work for me, and will supposedly be deleted within the hour). Details: 96kbps, 401KB, 34 secs = perfect ringtone, for those of us who can never leave Serenity...

Ringingly,

zoid

P.S. I will email the trimmed mp3 version to interested parties, upon request. (Or just use WavePad yourselves; it's a great tool.)

P.P.S. Great. Now my phone makes me cry. Like I need more emasculation in my life. _________________________________________________

Er, um, I mean: or, you could use www.savefile.com as I did (thanks for the tip, Jutin) -- it's free and does not require registration.

DonCoat:

Awright, so I stuck the 34 sec version -- suitable for mp3-capable phones as a ringtone -- on http://www.savefile.com/files2.php?fid=1021828 . I couldn't figure out how to successfully point my phone's browser at it though. Savefile.com looks pretty cool (even the free version), so I saved the site to my Bookmarks, but it doesn't look to be WAP-enabled, so folks'll have to figure out a different way to get the tune to their cellulars.

On a related note, I was able to download the ringtone I put up on mobile9.com (see link above) from a different phone, so y'all can still get that one onto your phones, while the link's still hot...

hey dood! many thanks for this!

out of curiosity, what program did you use to rip it? it's amazing quality (well, better than I could do anyway).

I tried doing it once for the end titles of Moulin Rouge with a free program called Sound Capture. it was ok, but it was a little scratchy when I brought the volume up.

anyway, merci extra big buckets!

I used a DVD-to-AVI conversion program. My source material was a DVD with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack (the video quality was only so-so, but the audio was impeccable; I have to assume that the original source was a real Serenity DVD).

The program is called DGIndex, which is derived from the well-known open-source program DVD2AVI. It takes DVD-type source files (with extensions like .vob) and converts them to other formats. This particular program allows you to (optionally) decode AC3 audio tracks to WAV files, and in the case of Dolby Digital, allows quite a lot of control over how the 5.1 tracks are handled to produce a stereo output.

I had to do a few tricky things to get good results, including a fancy prescale renormalization to get a good signal-to-noise ratio. My first few attempts had a lot of nasty-sounding background noise, until I got that right. The key turned out to be running the prescaling over only a minute or two of the file, rather than over the whole thing (I guess loud sound effects were skewing the results).

I also ran a 48-to-44.1kbps conversion so the result would be CD-equivalent quality, and I used high-quality options when I made the mp3 and wma versions.

Okay, probably more than you wanted to know... but the bottom line is, the file you hear is a direct conversion from the Dolby Digital tracks (with the best tuning of the conversion parameters I could come up with) and was never run through a sound card or audio capture step during the processing. I doubt it'll get much better than this... except for a bit of cleanup at the start (there's about 0.2 seconds of the last note of the preceding music that I didn't zero-out, though I've done that now on my personal copy).

Oh, and if anybody's worrying: I have multiple copies of the real DVD on order. I wouldn't bootleg Serenity (or any other intellectual property), but I don't suppose this little 2-week jump of the gun will do any harm.

I'm not entirely sure of the provenance of the source disc -- it was handed to me (unsolicited) by a friend and fellow Browncoat. There is some evidence that it's at least a second generation copy of an early DVD. The film is broken up into two titles, as if it was originally intended to be on two DVDs, and the chapters are divided by time rather than scene.

Overall, it's a pretty weird disc. But the audio tracks are perfect 5.1 Dolby Digital AC3, even though the video has been heavily recompressed and degraded.

I can't wait for my "real" DVDs to get here!
