I've become keen on using Firefly slang/Chinese curses in my daily comings and goings and would like to hear if others have done the same.

Anyone managed to mutter (or yell or yodel) any of our lovely Fireflyisms?

I've started to use gorram.

I use frell every so often and only watched the first season or two of Farscape years ago.

without planning it, i have yelled 'oh! look at the pretties!' across he place where I work,

and the word shiny seems to be working its way in more and more, but as for swearing in chinese, no.

That would require effort.

I've found that I say gorram it! quite frequently and not thinking about it. Shiny has popped out too. Fei hua and fey fey d'pian is the only chinese I have used but that's been on purpose.

Oh yes. I work at a store that specializes in foreign language materials, and the staff are all Firefly fans (thanks to my viral marketing techniques).
Gorram & shiney are everyday words here, and le suh and go se are the standby swear words.
The "Making Out in Mandarin" phrasebook practically lives on the recieving desk. It's ... kinda scary, actually...

Wow! My original post limits the discussion to slang and/or curses. That was shortsighted.

I too use phraseology from the show constantly. The sentences just roll out of there own accord.

Per-maybe-haps comes out effortlessly, I find.

I 'spect my speech has been infected with all manner of Firefly talk. It's said that I sound like a ruttin' town hall meetin' on Serenity. At work I say 'gorram' and 'and such', and 'is all' and 'go-se' and 'I'm kinda on the clock here, it's frustrating', but they all just look at me, funny-like.

I'm thinkin' I might need help, dong ma?

Not so much pharses from the show/ movie or Chinese, but I am quite skilled at getting my self into and out of trouble with Japanese!!! and yes it is my standard fall back for cusen. Not to mention I combine English and Japanese to make some interesting cuss words. All my Japanese friends love it and just start busting out in laughter at my style of cussen. I am a poor brown coat at the moment, but when I get some time/ money, series and movie are on my list not to mention X-mas wish list right now. So probably pick up more pharses. Still some reg ones you can't let go of ie CF : Now Ain't that a cluster F!!! etc.

Dragged 'em all to see Serenity, and then loaned my dvds. It's a good thing, honest!

Only problem is that my boss has started lookin' straight at me and sayin' "Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly comin' to a middle."

Kinda makes me wish I had Vera handy.

I'm trying to learn Mandarin because I feel my Chinese should go beyond swearing. :) The course is online but has native speakers pronouncing the phrases. So far i know how to spot the difference between Mandarin and other varieties of Chinese but that's about all. Its a Ducth /Chinese course so I won't post the link.

One weekend I decided to polish and wax my Ford (after neglecting it for a year) to get rid of the oxidized paint. After 2 hours and a bottle of cleanering wax, I told my mom to take look at my now reflective car, and she blurted out "Ooh, it's shiny!".

Then she looked at me and we both started laughing.

It all got out of hand once I started writing fanfic and was thinking about dialogue a whole gorram lot – now its all quite fong luh …

I got into Firefly via my boyfriend's buddy Dante and I've noticed now that when I've over there, Dante will randomly say a Firefly phrase. I'm very entertained every time it happens.

I've also been noticing a few Firefly phrases creeping into my own speech. Nothing too specific, but an appropriate quote here and there... :)

You know a show has great writing when you constantly want to quote it.

I use shiny on a regular basis.

Nothing else really comes out of my mouth unintentionally. Though I do think gorramit, dong ma, go se, tah ma dah, luh suh, bee jway, and jien tah duh quay quite a lot. I'm sure all of the above will work their way into my spoken language.

Also phrases such as "my food is problematic" and "some people juggle geese" come out when appropriate. (and the food one does quite a lot, seeing as how I work in a kitchen lol)

I posted on this very thing my ownself a bit back. I'm a coach and without realizing it I ended a huddle with "We shiny?"

I'm also a 3rd grade teacher and caught myself a hairsbreath from finishing with "Dong ma?" when I was fussing at the class about something.

I think wo de ma, ta ma da, and hun dun all the time, but rarely do more mutter them.

Go se and gorram come out fairly often. And I use pretties all the frakking time.

I'm a teacher and I find myself uttering the word 'ain't' more than I should (and I work with special needs kids who need good language skills modelled!).

Here's one for ya...

A few week's back I was among a number of folk at my place 'o employment who were asked to give their impression comparing our product with that of a certain competitor for some sort of promotional video (strictly corporate stuff, not on TV or anything). Anyway, after going through the "normal" speak I was given an opportunity to just say something about the two products that just "popped" into my head. I can't say what I said exactly but I ended with "the other product? ...Not so much."

Of course this was lost on the marketing guys who were directing the whole thing so I don't know if it'll make it into the final video. If it does it'll be a hoot! In any case, it tickled me that I snuck that in.

Well I go to sleep and wake up using Firefly speak in my head....does that count?

Seriously...its totally starting to come out...I was in the deli yesterday and the guy behind the counter was moving like molassas so i said "you are starting to damage my calm" (very appropriate since I had just come from a meditation class)

Anyway..the guy next to me heard it and started laughing hysterically so of course I schooled him on the best show that ever was...told him to get himself some Firefly DVDs ASAP.

Come to think of it...coule have used my quote below as well in that situation

Far as normal speak, "shiny" is the only that makes much of a regular appearance, though I'm dying for a good opportunity to use some of those lines. I'm still waiting on "my days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle." :)

Course I've always found the alternates to swearing to be of great use when online. Was always a big fan of frell, from Farscape, and I've been using that for years now. Gorramn is a really good one, too, and sure to become another standby as well.

Far as any of the chinese stuff: I'm just to lazy to learn any of those :)

That would be so cool to have as a resource! If you have the time and energy, you could post the dictionary here on the fireflyfans.net home page in the left sidebar (Firefly Database) under Culture>Language. Right now there isn't anything there. It would be wonderful to have it there as a reference tool.

Possible to expand it to cool phrases as well? There are so many . . .

Other day someone asked me how to spell "shiny." It wasn't Firefly-related, but I had to grin anyway.

It would take a while to compile it, but it's certainly something that could be done. As for actually doing it, what I'd ultimately like to do is create a database for it with all sorts of information about each quote (such as who said it, to whom they said it, when, etc.), maybe a quote rating system, make it searchable, etc. When I do things, I tend to overdo them, so all that may not be needed, but that's my vision, anyway. As for putting it here on fireflyfans.net, I think the easiest way to do such a project may be to run it at its own site and link to it from here if it ends up being a good resource.

Cool phrases? Yes. Dictionary? Sure. Any quote that's funny or good in any way? Heck yeah. I see this as a giant database. Something to ponder, anyway.

A database after my own heart. I love it! I'm working on one of Firefly injuries (who, by whom, how, why, when). It all started with the innocent question: "Who's been injured the most on cargo vessel Serenity?" The most innocuous questions lead one off in odd little directions.

I love your plan. Go for it, I say. It will inspire me to finish my wee project.

Here are the two places I've used to access quotes for my guerrilla marketing efforts (it's cool that they're already typeset and attributed--but keep an eye for errors on imdb):

I think I'm probably going to do my own research for the database. That will take a huge bit of time right there, but it will be worth it. Then comes the matter of designing the database, populating it, and coding the site. This could take a while :)

It would take a long time, but it would be darn fun, and you would eliminate any mistakes made by others. Good luck and enjoy the project. I look forward to seeing your results someday.

I seem to recall there was device that could read the closed captioning from a TV signal and transcribe it to a text file. Wouldn't this help in the development of the database or are the scripts already available somewhere?

That's an interesting thought. The only problem is I've seen a lot of errors in both subtitles and closed-captioning. A lot of errors. There are several even on the Firefly and Serenity DVDs.

The fun of collecting them is the legitimate excuse to watch all the episodes again to collect the quotes and their usage. I've done it before for specific purposes, and it's a lot of fun.
