"The Dude: I have to ask the inevitable, is the fate of Serenity sealed? Are there going to be more adventures?

Joss Whedon: The DVD sales will have a lot to do with that."

Sounds like Joss agrees with me, DVD sales are going to make or break a continuation. Interesting that he's considering possibilities like Direct-to-DVD, though.

Well, this makes the IGN report a little clearer. Since Joss isn't opposed to a direct to DVD Buffy movie and he probably won't be opposed to something similar in the Firefly universe, how far off is it from a combination Sci-Fi movie and DVD release? It may be that people at Universal are mulling the idea of a Serenity II movie on Sci-Fi channel and haven't brought it up yet with Joss.

From the previous Playboy interview, it seems that Joss might not be opposed to a Serenity II directed by Tim M. so if Joss is not available for a Serenity II Sci-Fi movie because of WW, maybe Tim M. will be tapped to do this.

Also here is another idea. Maybe Joss likes the idea of a sequel for Serenity (even if it is direct to DVD) but has come to conclusion that he doesn't have time (or the desire) anymore for a series. So he may oppose the idea of a Sci-Fi Serenity movie because he may fear getting trapped into a new Firefly series because there might be some sort of option on the project for that (I would assume most Sci-Fi movies have series options for the cast and creative crew if they are picked up as a series).

Maybe the Universal release was a trial ballon to see if Joss bites. If he isn't they have several options:

1) Offer him $$$$$ (unlikely since the whole goal on this is to make money on this project)

2) Try to get him to agree to be an executive producer and have Tim M. do most of the heavy lifting. That would allow Joss to keep all of his friends employed but provide him some creative distance if it turns out not to be successful (Joss doesn't need to see third incarnation of Firefly flop on his resume).

3) Approach him about doing some direct to DVD stuff. The question is when would Joss have time to do this since it is obvious that Joss will not be getting the big bucks for this project.

They'll just have to be offended with me, cuz that is what I am doin'!

I KNOW they will love "Serenity", so really I already know I'm doin' the right thing.

It'd be easy to explain how he didn't die. Something as simple as "He had a tracking device in his suit that, when activated, called his ship to his position." would do the trick.

Great interview. I hope the DVD sells well enough for us to get a sequel.

It's easy to explain Early's survival. "well, here I am" was a code phrase. When transmitted over a certain frequency it caused his ship to lock onto the signal and come to him.

If you actually see a character die, they're dead. Crow is mince-meat.

I don't know about Early being able to call his ship back although I do think that his ship is a bit too small. It looks to be the size of Serenity's shuttles, maybe even be smaller than the shuttles, and I doubt that those shuttles are able to make the trip between worlds because of "Out of Gas." My guess is that Early has a bigger ship that he uses to travel between planets and the smaller ship is a stealth ship used to sneak up on his prey.

We saw (comic book spoiler), seems like it doesn't hold.

Though he might only have done that because of the comic and never would've done that in TV show form as well. Whereas early, I expected to live.

As for the shuttles, compare a Yahtt to a military craft or fishing boat. They're both the same size, but which do you think goes farther? Comfort for speed/distance. Also, his ship was likely *much* more expensive than Serenity, or at least the shuttles. Remember the verse motto, just becasue technology exists doesn't mean everyoen can afford it.

I saw "Objects in Space" again and Early's ship is really small, smaller than Serenity's shuttles, probably one of the smallest crafts in the show, didn't look to be bigger than the hospital shuttle in "Ariel."

Regarding

the character death mentioned in the article

, I was very interested to hear Joss talk about everyone's reaction to that. I was very curious as to how everyone felt about how that ended up. Quite excellent to find that out.

But remember that the Firefly-class is considered "old technology" but is still very reliable. It may be that Early's ship has some more advanced propulsion unit than the Firefly shuttles (which may be as old as Serenity itself).

It's certainly possible that Early ship really is capable of interplanetary travel but we've never actually seen a ship that small travel between planets. Not to mention the fact that some of those trips takes weeks so it could be very dangerous to be using a ship that small. Plus did Early ever say that he works alone?

Joss Whedon: Oh, I know he survived.

Since it's "getting awfully crowded in my sky," it's not necessary that Jubal's ship came back for him; he could've been picked up by anyone. As for Crow, I think I'll quote Jayne from War Stories, "what're we gonna do, clone him?" Thanks for posting the link.

Keep the shiny side up!
