My guess is the series is officially dead since
Nathan Fillion just signed a 6-figure contract with NBC.

Well, I see on IMDB that Adam Baldwin has a few movies and stuff in the works. I'm sure they're all just finding work till Firefly's fate is decided. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't come back as Mal.

What ever happen to good news?

Ahh, well, it is good to see Nathan working, not that I'll ever watch, but hey, its television... you know, vast wasteland and all.

:(

Anyone got a perspective on what this actually means for his potential involvement in more Firefly? I wonder if the NBC contract is exclusive.
It seemed odd that the article mentioned his role in Firefly, but he wasn't asked, or they didn't print any comment that he might have made on that front.

I also am worrying that the news that Joss and co are 'working on a new angle' for the series might somehow fit in here. Mal was one of the strengths of the show, would it have a life without him?

NBC hasn't decided what kind of show they want to do for Nathan. I have a great idea for 'em. It's 500 years in the future, and there's this spaceship, see?

(stolen from somebody's post on the official boards.)

Kaylee: You know, it's funny you should mention that... ever heard of the Fox network?

LOL
I was quietly hoping it was some kind of ruse to drag Firefly along to NBC with Fillion, but I guess that is just hope beyond hope :(

I wouldn't think this would preclude his involvement in a potential movie, but it probably does mean he couldn't continue with the series. A continuation of the series isn't looking too likely at the moment, though, anyway.

I know it's hard to sit in uncertainty about the fate of our favorite show, but I don't see how this proves anything. I can't see Joss doing the show without the talents of Mr. Fillion. So if Nathan were really exclusively committed to not do Firefly, we'd hear about it from Joss or Tim. We haven't. So this proves nothing as far as I'm concerned.

HKCavalier

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

lalalalalalalalalalalala...I can't hear you lalalalalalalalalalalala.

Really though, if they do get the go-ahead for Firefly, will Nathan's new salary make him too expensive for the show?

Gotta go, I think I have an episode to write. (see virtual season3)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not very encouraging news at all.

Well, the article does not say that the contract is exclusive, but I do not think that Nathan could work on any project that would jeopardize his contract w/ NBC. Since his obligation is to them, he can not just break his contract or endanger his career.

Let's face it, I hold as much hope as anyone that the show will get back on the air, but so far we have not had much in the way of encouraging news. Sure the sets are still standing, but the cast contracts expired on 2/1 and here it is only 3 days later and Nathan has signed w/ NBC. No one can possibly fault him as he has to work and there seems to be no word of Firefly getting back on the air.

I hope the show does make it back onto the small screen, in some shape or form, and that if it does, Nathan is able to come back and play Mal, as he seems perfect for the role.

Way to stay positive HKCavalier. I am with you. I've said it before and I will say it again. I have faith in Joss.

This is a good sign for Nathan. However, I do not have faith in NBC to know how to work Nathan's show. They need to get James Burrows to direct to make it work as a comedy or John Wells to produce if it is a drama. Otherwise it will just be filler and if the ratings fail Nathan will be available again.

Everyone, have faith in Joss. I will not give up until he does. Joss can do amazing things. Although I cannot see anyone ever replacing Nathan. I beleive Joss can make anything work.
When Doyle died on Angel and was replaced by Wesley, I went ugh! I realy hated Wesley and thought this was the worst idea ever. Now, after careful development and Alexis' talent I love Wesley and I have learned to place complete trust in Joss. He has the touch.

I do believe Serenity will keep flying.

Unfortunately, Nathan was the lead it's an ensemble cast, but the show was about these people, and their loyalty etc. The passengers (Book and Inara) can be off loaded, Jayne, Wash and Zoe could get killed off, Simon and River could get arrested, but in the mythology of the show, Serenity is what it is because of Malcolm Reynolds.

Before I get flamed, I am not saying that Malcolm is the only important member of the show, it's just that the show is about his ship and his crew.

It's gonna take major tap dancing and creative voo-doo to replace Nathan. And they better not lame out and do a "Bewitched" where another actor plays Malcolm Reynolds and no one says anything, and they better not do a "Love Boat" where they substitute a similar looking actor as Mal's brother as the new captain.

Basically, I'm scared. I need a blankie so I can go in a corner and suck my thumb until it's all better.

>>>ically, I'm scared. I need a blankie so I can go in a corner and suck my thumb until it's all better.<<<

Hang in there, LA. Curl up in a ball for awhile if you need to.

IMO, which counts for nothing, btw, we'll get DVDs. We'll get movies, hopefully. Maybe.

Otherwise, all these actors are going to go on and do great things and tell great stories.

And when we enjoy those stories, cos we will, we can think back and cherish our Firefly memories.

Cos damn. For ahwile there, it was the best myth ever.

Taking the high road!

Well - maybe it's completely dead.
The one thing worse than this would be for it to come back ... dimished.

I just wish I knew what this 'new angle' mentioned by Tim a while back was....

Too long with no news.

Actually, the cast's contracts ran out on Jan, 31st. We really can't fault Nathan, or any of the cast for that matter, for looking for work.

If it comes to it, I'd rather Firefly continue without him than not continue at all because he's under contract for another network. the role Could be recast.

I am both sad and elated to hear this news.
Having once been an actor, I know how it is when you're not working. Unless you're in the Money-So-Big-You-Only-Have-To-Work-Once-A-Year, you're waiting for that next job.
On that hand, I'm happy that he's signed a contract and it seems that the pay is decent. (Yes, 6 figures is ruttin' decent from where I'm sittin'!)
I hope the other members of the cast can snag some 'in-the-meantime' work while the Firefly situation gets ironed out...however it ends up.
*sigh*

A movie is not a bad idea. Obviously, the television rating system is flawed, but a movies popularity is based soley on ticket sales. If they make a movie and it does well, it could mean more movies.
