Finally got to watch "Objects in Space" yesterday and had to comment on it. Jubal Early is, without a doubt, THE scariest villian I've ever seen. The scene where he threatens Kaylee literally had me trembling with apprehension from the moment he asked her if she'd ever been raped. I found myself, at several points, wanting to beat that bastard with a very large monkey wrench. I literally started cheering and laughing when he figured out where River was, and felt VERY good when he got his just desserts.

I hate Jubal Early, yet at the same time, I was compelled by the character. His constant philosophizing and almost-friendly banter made quite a contrast to his utterly callous demeanor. And color me impressed by the way he nearly achieved his goal (and must have actually succeeded many times before) without any special gadgets, just a ship, a spacesuit, and a pistol.

Here lies my darling wife Zoe, my autumn flower.
Not quite so attractive now she's all corpsified and gross.

Very shiny.

You sound like my husband, who says, "I want to hate Early! But he's just so cool!"

Now, watch the beginning over and over again and give me your two cents about the symbolism behind the ocean sound.

I think the "ocean" sound was just an effect to accentuate the notion that River was seeing and hearing things out of the ordinary. I listened to it again, and it doesn't really sound that much like waves so much as white noise.

What was your idea about it?

That's what I thought it was too: white noise - like River was tuning into an "off station" channel on a radio. Hiss of static for the ambient probabilities and surface thoughts of the crew and all, then she filters out Early in all of it and homes in.

I'll have to watch it again to see what you mean, but that's what I remember.

Mal: “The next time you decide to stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face.”

Y'all don't think it was a love sound?

Why is it a filtering sound if we only hear it for Wash/Zoe and Mal/Inara? Cos of the very intense feelings?

Sorry to have hijacked yet another thread. And really, I think "Eat your heart out, Boba Fett" would make an excellent name for a rock album.

I definitely hear water, and thunder, like it's raining hard over the ocean. Too me, it's more than just white noise.

Question: What is Book talking about? Whose innocence is being questioned - Jayne's?

Book doesn't know that Jayne betrayed the Tams, does he? I thought that Mal is the only one who knows.

I misunderstood - you meant the noise heard specifically for Wash/Zoe and Inara/Mal. I was referring to her "mind-reading" noise in general.

Now that I've listened again, I hear the ocean waves and think you have a point. It's obviously appropriate for the Wash/Zoe scene. River experience quite a tidal wave of emotions I'd think. The question is, are the waves we hear for Mal & Inara just the continuing buildup to the break (when River steps on the branch) or do they represent the strong emotion between Mal & Inara? I tend towards the former. "None of it means a damn thing" doesn't seem all that touchy-feely.

It doesn't seem all that touchy feely, but it's cos they're SECRETLY in love.

Hell, I don't know. How'd I end up with all this schoolin'? Vast discussions about this over on the Fox boards taking into consideration "Heart of Gold"--the missing ep between WS and OiS.
