Hi y'all.

Rewatched Objects in Space a little this weekend. I know there's been a lot of discussion about what River sees and hears at the beginning, but I caught something and I don't remember having seen it discussed.

River moves out of the galley into the hall that leads to the bridge. She sees Wash and Zoe smooching. As the camera cuts back and forth between Wash/Zoe and River there is the sound of ocean waves (to me they sound like that) then music. Then, she moves off down that short corridor, to the stairs, where she catches Mal and Inara fighting. After she "hears" Inara "I'm a big girl..." and Mal "None of it..." there's that same ocean wave noise as before.

My question/theory: Does the ocean sound represent "love" (Wash and Zoe were obviously in love and Mal and Inara should be in love--whatever, you know what I mean) or is that the sound of River being overwhelmed with feeling? Perhaps the make-out session was getting to *that* point and it overwhelmed her. Then, Mal and Inara were so wounded that their feelings overwhelmed her.

Thoughts? Am I out to lunch?

Sarah

I love that opening scene, it is so provocative. I'm still trying to figure it out. I think Book's inner thoughts are the most interesing.

"I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not... Now where does that leave you?"

DRAKON

I noticed something the 3rd time I watched this. Note that Simon is talking to River, and so is Jayne. They look at her when they say their lines. But Book does not at all. He is staring at his food. And note how he plays up his battle with Jubal when talking to Jayne. What up with that? Memory of his worst behavior that he is falling back into? what?

I had thought Book was an ex soldier or merc who'd seen too much killing to be happy about it, took vows of the order and is now finding out whether his is a "hot house" faith or not. Whether his faith can survive in the real world outside the abbey.

Also note that while he kneecaps the first guy in War Stories, the second one takes a blast in the chest.

Its these little things that have been bugging me since the show has aired. And why Joss is such a good writer.

I thought that he was looking at River out of the corner of his eye. He's not looking at his food. I'll watch again.

But that wasn't the question. The question was about the ocean sound!

SABI

Here I am, on topic and ready to speculate:

I think the ocean noise that River heard while "sensing" Wash and Zoe was symbolic of the emotions flowing between them as well as the strength of that emotion. I think the same goes for what she sensed from Mal and Inara except that her reactions to the two experiences are different - with Wash and Zoe she almost let herself go and was feeling what they were feeling until she staggered away. With Mal and Inara, she seemed kind of disturbed and ran away from them, as if she was sensing maybe chaos and anger? I dunno.

The whole scene is strange... is she really there at all? No one seems to acknowledge her. Or is she being ignored, as if she were just an object floating through the room? Is that what Jayne thinks every time he sees her, that he feels weak because the money was too good, or does the conversation he's having with book bring the thought to mind?

And the way she steps into the room, as if she's seeing something we can't see, and the way she comes down the steps almost looks as if she expects to float away... there's so much going on here. And we may never find out what...

This is very similar to the Boba Fett thread.
