another thing i just thought of might be to have the older character eventually become the captain, or authority on the ship. But he doesn't want to be in charge, he wants everyone to be equal and have a fair say, so he could say something like "i'm not the captain! i'm not in charge. I won't see this ship turned into a tyranical dictatorship with one man telling everyone else what to do!" just becuase it would be somewhat ironic. (later when it's serenity, Mal is completely in charge and tells everyone what to do.)
Not to make Mal sound like an evil dictator by any means. I just thought it might be kind of funny.

Here's an idea, one of the crew could be a scientist- a scientist with a dark past- a scientist who worked on the PAX program. He is ashamed of what he had been working of.

"I am become death, Destroyer of worlds" sort of ashamed.

Since we all think that Book has something like this, it'd be nice to introduce something like that.

Are you sure that Star Gate SG-1 isn't in that list as well?

I would love to start a "Chat Event", but I don't know how. I'm loving all the ideas... I like the scientist idea and I think that it can play an important part in the story.

How do you start a "Chat Event"? or maybe someone can start it for me.

Hi all, I'm new here, but not new to Firefly.

It's funny you should make this thread at the same time I've been working on my own new Firefly series. I'm not much of a writer and can't really do anything else related to making a show, I'm more of an ideas man. So I'm just going to throw my ideas into the pot and you can decide for yourselves if you like them.

First the crew:
Captain Derek Fletcher: (male) Browncoat who lost everything he had to lose short of his life during the war. That makes him an angry and bitter person who just wants to be alone. He would be except he got lost and almost died, so he needed a pilot.
Pilot Shazza Bohn: (female) Haven't actually come up with a personallity for her yet, so she's still up in the air. But she's very loyal.
Mercenary Jack "Thorn" Thorburn: (male) Captain Fletcher bought his allegience and has it until a better offer comes along. Other than that, don't have much on him.
Prisoner Zekk Leong: (male) Escaped convict. Killed Feds. Not pro-Independant either. He'd kill you if you looked at him wrong. He stays because the captain owed him a favor.
Mechanic Tekimo "Tek" or "Mac" (haven't decided which yet) McNamara: (male) He's best described as a "90's Californian stoner." Has a habit of calling the captain "Boss." Very gifted with whatever engine is powering the ship.
Doctor Dawn Zahra: (female) Long story short, she had a terminal illness so she transferred her consciousness into a robotic body. (I describe it as a supped-up Lovebot). No personality planned out yet.

The plot:
The series starts out about a month before "Serenity-The Movie" for the sole porpose of establishing the characters. It's pretty much like the Firefly series we knew, searching for work and doing jobs. Then out of the blue the signal (the one from the movie about Miranda) gets recieved and the show moves into a pre-war mode.

That's my ideas in a nutshell, I have more backgrounds and future story ideas. If you want them just ask. So take 'em or leave 'em, but I'm making my own fic series out of this, however it would be great if I could see it on screen and not just in my head.

If you go into this chat:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/fireflychat.asp

There is a button that says "Start Chat Event". If you click the button, you can input info into "The FFF.NET CALENDER", so i assume you just do that.

I have only actually been in this paticular chatroom once, for a few minutes, so i really dont know much about it either

STUPIDERLIKEAFOX, You have some really good ideas, but the crew sounds pretty similar to the crew of Serenity. I think it might be more interesting to try and go with characters that are completely different, but might be in the smae kind of situation.

again, just my humble opinion.

May i suggest a chat event not on the site? It could get confusing with all the folks typing and random folks popping in from time to time. They may not like the chat being taken over either. Perhaps we could set up a group chat on MSN, AIM, or YIM.

Okay, so I'm gonna be the annoying fan that keeps after all of you to get the show completed. I can proofread. I can do some graphicy-type stuff...not cgi though, textures make me crazy. I like the PAX idea. If you look at Firefly almost all the characters seem to have either a secret or a life changing moment. I think that's what gave the characters depth.

My suggestion for a crew (not nescessarily a serious suggestion just an illistration.)

Willard (Will) Hawkings (Capt) formally a loyal mid ranking Alliance officer now trying to scrape a living out on the Rim. Dishonorably discharged, though neither he nor any Alliance they meet will explain why. Whatever it was proved to be traumatic, he keeps having flashbacks of a little Chinese girl screaming at him. He's in his early to mid 30's insular and somewhat formal, a native of Ariel and a core worlder. Imagine the Alliance captain from "Bushwacked" who's taken a wrong turn.

Amy Frost (Pilot) She was quite literally the girl next door, the kid that lived next to the Hawking's family on Ariel. She's ten years younger than Will and spent so long at his place growing up that he sees her almost as his little sister. There are suggestions that her feelings for him go deeper than that but she's timid about expressing herself for fear of driving him away. She's loyal to him and is trying to get back the boy that went to war. Her father was an academic who opposed the war and was interned by the Alliance. Her family lost everything and Amy's mother, unable to deal with the stress, commited suicide. The Hawkings family took Amy in and protected her so there is a strong element of gratitude in her love of their son. She does however hate the Alliance with a passion.

Dr Emiline Choi [Dr] (I would love to have at least one Asian character if we can find a good enough actor, this character is here as an example.) Deals occasionally go bad on the crew. During what should have been a milk run to a fronteer settlement the crew got ambushed and Will got shot. The local doctor, Dr Choi, patched him up well enough but the Sheriff had felt obliged to report the incident to the local Fed garison commander. When she heard that the Feds where on their way Dr. Choi unexpectedly packed her things and appeared at the ship asking if they needed a doctor. It's clear that she's running from the Alliance, it's unclear why. We later discover that she was part of the team that developed Paxilate Hydride (PAX). She had found some problems during lab tests, results her ambitious team leader had suppressed. When the Miranda field test had gone bad the team leader had dumped most of the blame on Emiline. Little did he realise but he had actually done her a favour, faced with prosecution Emiline had run, leaving the core just before the Parliament had ordered the death of all the scientists and the erasure of all reference to PAX and Miranda. Emiline is on the run with possibly an Alliance Operative on her trail.

Joss Farrell (Mechanic) Young punk kid, ex Browncoat (they were getting desperate for men) awkward, bumbling, has a tendency to stutter under stress or when talking to women. He's a sweet kid but will never make it with a girl unless she makes the openning move. He may be carrying a torch for Amy, but she is so caught up with Will she never notices. He is a nerds, nerd, almost anything a modern nerdy kid would be into he's into. He is also the smartest person on the boat by a significant margin. He is super smart, in fact almost River Tam smart --- though his shyness manages to hide it well.

Dalton Maynard is a thug, a heavy, a gunsel. He was hired by Will because one too many deals went wrong and he needed some extra security. Dalt was happy to do whatever was needed as long as he got paid. He didn't always see eye to eye with Will but hey it was Will's ship.... That changed once Emiline Choi came on board. Dalt is dumb but just smart enough to realise his own shortcomings. Emiline is way above his level and he knows it but he's falling for her anyway. Part of this could be Florence Nightingale syndrome --- Dalt get's beat up and shot up enough times that he spends a lot of time in Dr Choi's care--- but in any case he's decided in his own ham fisted way to woo her. Surprisingly she finds him cute, mainly because he's plain speaking. Dalt has taken this as encouragement..

Mr. Smith (Passenger) Older man, dark haired, angular features and fiercely inteligent. Cold, almost mocking in his manners. He booked passage to a border system despite being told that it might take the ship a year to work its way out there. He doesn't seem worried or in a hurry, never explains his business or indeed anything. When Dr Choi came on board he seemed interested in her and this makes her nervous. Dalt, not sure if he had a rival or a threat to Dr Choi attempted to turn over Mr. Smith's room. Dalt later found himself in the cargo bay buck naked and with no memory of what happened. He and Smith have been circling each other since.

This is a great idea! I wish I had some kind of production/acting talent... darn.

Still, I can proofread, and translate to Spanish if you plan on doing subtitles. (Please do!)

Oh, in case we use the pre-Mal Serenity ship idea... one of the ways we can connect the ship to the BDH adventures is by having someone on board believe in destiny or some such. That way, when they part with the Firefly ship, that person can be like, "Everything happens for a reason." Or something like that. :)

I hope this happens!

I love these characters Fletch2 and the background behind them... I think they can serve great.

Ok what are we doing..... we're just throwing idea out, we need some organization.

We need an outlet to start deligating jobs and positions. Is there a place that most of the people are so that we can make that the place to start filming. I think the actors shouldn't have to travel to far to get the job done [unless they want to].

i would like the writers to be choosen so that they can start collaborating and we can have one script instead of five or six seperate scripts.

Then we can start picking actors and CG artists to get the thing off the ground.

Ideas are great but they aren't really getting us any closer to getting this thing started. We need to start getting organized.

When i read the description of Joss Farrell (Mechanic), I thought that that would be an awesome part to play. I'm pretty young, 18, so i wouldn't be able to travel much, and I live near Portaldn OR. If there's anyway any filming could be done near there, and you guys would have me, i would be honored to have the part.

Do people want to go with these characters? If they do I will write a "bible" With character backgrounds, places and things and make it available for writers.

I think everyone who wants to write something should come up with some story ideas and "pitch" them. I think it would be a good idea to bring in a new character to what will be an established core group --- like the Tams and Book joined up in Serenity. That way we discover some character back story though the interactions.

Okay, now I've read all the replies and have a better idea of what's going on.

I have many services I would like to offer. I'm willing to put money and travel into this thing.

I am an experienced actor. Right now I'm a little overweight, but check out my pictures anyway at http://www.myspace.com/notabus. I would love to play a character, any character, especially one that fights, I am a purple belt in kenpo karate. Most of my experience in acting has been in Shakespeare. I started studying at age ten. I just finished a Junior College production in which I used a Southern accent, which I think would be so fun to have in the Firefly 'Verse. Seriously, I want to be a character who dresses in frilly, sunny dresses and has a Southern drawl.

I am a writer. I posted it before. You can check out parts of one of my scripts at http://notabus.deviantart.com. I have a lot of ideas floating through my head right now for the Firefly 'Verse. Most of them are actually for villains. I have one idea of an Operative for the Alliance that has telekinetic powers, proof that the Alliance actually does have plans for it's psychic test subjects. I would love to be a part of the writing crew.

I am a musician. I own both the Firefly and Serenity soundtracks (I'm listening to them right now). I am willing to be a composer. That is, of course, if you find no one better, since I am only experienced writing rock and blues on the guitar ad piano. I would either need to get a violin (I'm already planning for slide guitar) or find a violinist, since the fiddle is quite prominent in the types of music that conglomerate to th sound of Serenity.

I am also an experienced director, but only for young actors (I helped teach a class for preteens) and for a short film I made with my friends. I would like to help, but not take the reigns.

I have joined the Yahoo community and will be checking it out.

My e-mail is fredsnakelady@hotmail.com. My AIM screenname is Mssmrdth925.

I had two thoughts

1) Costumes --- We need someone to keep track of places where we can get costume items -- shirts, coats etc. I live in a Western state so some things will be available "off the peg" here.

2) Construction. To my mind we need 2 "sets" minimum. One is the cockpit because I dont see how we can sell the idea of the ship flying without it. The other is the rear loading ramp done in such a way as to be transportable. I'm assuming here that our first outing will be outside the ship in the main.

I did have an interesting idea. Near here there is a western "Ghost town" that gets used every halloween but I believe is empty the rest of the year. Maybe we could see about hiring it for filming?

I don't have time to read the full thread and comment on story ideas and such, but I just wanted to post my interest up. I write a lot in my spare time (nothing formal except for a 100% in creative writing GCSE :p), and I've done some random acting in my spare time (also nothing formal). I'll be involved in either of those ways, although I'm in the UK (England) so again, that could be a problem. What's the status on we Britts being involved in any way?

Where is this "Ghost Town"? i think that would be great for the outside scenes.... See if maybe we get it for free or at least a low enough number.

Agreed, a ghost town would be great for a shooting location. Is it located in desertland? If so, I think it could pass off as a boarder moon settlement with ease.

This is getting really exciting. It will be fun to get the writers together and start on an episode based on what resources we actually have.

I think the most important thing to figure out, though, is the characters. Pleeease, can we create a character that I can play? I'm a very good actress, and I'm willing to travel. I'm worth it.

Yeah, cheers for that. Its great that your putting a website together by the way, thanks.
Wow great idea with the database! Well done!

Thanks, guys

Now, sets:

This 'ghost town' sounds like a great resource - and there's at least a good chance of getting some time in there for free for a project like a Firefly fanfilm.

A cockpit set is a must. The cargo bay would be great - but it's a little harder to put together.

Other sets: with a decent bluescreen and some clever lighting, you can pull off nearly anything. It's not the ideal solution - acting to nothing but blue is hard, and there's the added difficulties of keying, compositing, and modelling the environment, but for places otherwise impossible, it's a lifesaver. Good for set extensions too - cockpit windows, computer screens, hangar doors, and the like.

I think we should arrange a time in which all of the writers meet up in a chatroom (maybe the one on the yahoo group) and discuss the storyline \ plot elements, and exchange idea's.

Cargo bay is the absolutely hardest thing to do It has multiple levels and lots of contructional steelwork. We could maybe dress a "corner" of the bay and use shots taken from the series to establish the scene but the big bay is impossible.

The Ramp we need because that's the all important link between the "ship" and the location. We just need the ramp itself the area around it and a short coridor. We can put in the cargo bay and the rest of the ship with CGI

The ghost town is off Interstate 20 about 50 miles sout of Dallas. It's not in open country because it's basically a Halloween attraction. I don't have kids so I haven't been there when it was open, I passed it on the way to a jobsite a few years ago and thought it looked pretty neat. I will reseach it and other places. I believe there are a few western towns around here.

To my mind we need to get a large local group somewhere in the country to get involved with this. That would give us extras transport and crash space for out of town actors and technical people.

I think thats a great idea Browntrousers, we need to get the writers first. That means that we need to figure out how we going to go about writing this.

I was thinking that we get a bunch of writers together, then have one of them write the script, put it out to the other writers and the collaborate on changes, additions, and subtractions. I think that way we don't have five scripts to change, we have only one.

How does that sound?
