A: A superb suggestion with just two major drawbacks. One, we don't have any defensive shields. And two, we don't have any defensive shields. Technically speaking thats only one flaw, but it was such a big one I thought I mention it twice.

This is my first time posting here. I just got hooked onto Firefly recently, when my brother's friend lent me the DVDs. Sadly, Serenity is no longer playing in theaters, so I can't see it until I buy the DVD. In any case, I would put my complete effort behind a movement to get Firefly back on the air. I'm in high school with a part time job at the library-- however, I have no problem pledging at least $100 a season, and up to $500-$700 if it really was going to happen. However, for this to work, a real website needs to be put up, with legal info and all of that.

It makes me very sad when I hear all the bad news about how Serenity is doing in theaters and such, and I really hope this movement goes somewhere.

o Be an extra/small part in an episode

It appears that practicaly EVERYONE who gets a chance to see FF, or gets tied to a chair and made to watch an episode or two, falls in love with it. So far, I know of noone who has watched it that didn't like it. I'm sure there are plenty out there who won't. I just havn't met em yet.

We need some better method(s) of advertising it to the masses, who for the most part, seem to have never heard of it in the first place. I know. Hard to imagin what with FOX's stellar advertising of the original series and all.

My sisters both LOVE this kind of show and neither one had ever herd of it before I showed them the DVDs. I vaguely remember seeing an add or two back when the show first aired but it looked dumb and not worth the effort to record it on vhs (all I had at the time to record with) as I work evenings. Since Sci-Fi is now re-airing them and I have a ReplayTV (like tivo), I finaly got to see an episode and was instantly hooked.

I think the best way to get more FF made is to get more fans. I been bugging guys at work and put a FF wallpaper up on my work PC. It generates questions and I even got one guy to watch the pilot episode (loaned him the DVD) and told him to check it out on Sci-Fi.

Anyway, shear numbers of people waving wallets is the only sure way to get the studios attention unless you happen to have one or two people with really, really big wallets.

Take a page out of Mel Gibsons book (passion). He couldn't get any studio to touch the project with a ten foot pole. Every one of them thought it would be a massive looser. So he funded it himself and made a fortune from it. Showed all those studio execs Just what A**holes they were for turning him down.

Find some really rich people and convert them to fans. Get them to finance it. But you STILL need to show them a large enough fan base to convince them they will make a return on their investment.

One sound buisness proposal to the right person may be worth much more in terms of getting this project off the ground than any number of fans waving dollars at a studio that has demonstrated complete disreguard for their fans so many, many times...

Look what happend recently with the Sony virus.. *cough* Er... The Sony Digital Rights Management software... Hehe. If enough people want something to happen. It CAN be accomplished. I believe that any TRUE buisnessman knows that it's the CUSTOMER that is always right.

It's been pointed out that many Sci-Fi shows have been killed, never to be revived... What about Star Trek? The original shows first season was treated almost as badly as Firefly has been. If not for the MASSIVE letter writing campaign by the fans, it would have never been heard from again.

It's astonishing how much money that franchise has generated for the studios involved and who had to be dragged kicking and screaming into putting Star Trek back on the air after it was cancelled.

If we could figure a way to generate enough fans and then convince them to stop watching any FOX station or licenced FOX show on ANY OTHER station (EG: buffy on UPN, etc...) AND make sure FOX knows this. We'd have new FF episdes within a few months. I absolutely guarantee it. The INSTATNT they become aware that NOT making new FF episodes will affect their bottom line, they will be all smiles for Joss and the gang and the Red carpet will roll out. But NOT ONE SECOND SOONER.

Say! One more though. Find a company or 20 willing to pledge advertising buys but ONY during _N_E_W_ FF episodes. If you can get enough of them that FOX would be able to show a profit on airing episodes (even buys at UPN/Sci-Fi for the same conditions) but they get nothing if they don't. The chances probably go up exponentially of getting a new season.

Just have to put toghether a solid package of info on the deomgraphics of FF fans and find those companies who would really want to reach US! Given that sort of situation, I'm sure thos companies would be well rewarded by the fans.

This idea takes a page out of the Rush Limbaugh radio show. He makes sure the fans know the advertisers make the show possible. He has said on the air that when a new advertiser signes on to the show, they are often overwhelmed by new buisness. They just don't expect the response they get from adds that do so much less at other times of the day and during other shows.

It's all in how you package the proposals.

Yah, pipe dreams, I know. But prety, shiny pipe dreams, none the less.

Maybe some combination of the above tactics?

Wow. It's late. The brain wanders. I'll probably come back and reread this tomorrow and cringe. Alot...

Oh, yah. Back to the purpose of this thread. I'd go for $150 or so a season if your plotting pays off and you do get some traction somewhere with this stuff.

Keep up the god fight THEANTIREAVER.

I hate Sci-Fi....

16 hours later and I've finished the DVD including "special footage" extras and crew interviews.
I can't believe how engaging this show was! The characters are well portrayed, the banter is witty, and the storylines are believable.
This isnt your momma's star-trek!

I'm an official convert is what I guess I'm trying to say. Put me down for $2500 USD per episode, and money well spent.

100 to 200 a season for sure. you know if the right for firefly are for sale we could give joss the money to buy them and then finance whatever we want to finance as long as he is willing to make it. I posted on another thread that there are enough crazy fans that we could pull off something like the star wars fan movie if joss was involved, people would be sure to lend any skill they could to the overall production, probably for no pay, or little pay.

If I saw a fund, that had Joss Whedon's blessing, I could make room for $100_USD a month.

And don't be worried about Paramount shooting down a save-the-Enterprise fund, FOX doesn't own the firefly IP, and I dare them to pretend to give a rip about the show now. The response would be, unfavorable. Unfavorable like threatening the very lives of Tycho and Gabe over at Penny Arcade.

Hell! I could get my pizza delivery customers in on it. Either get the money from them or point them in the right direction!

Just, please, dear God, no scumbag PayPal handling the operations. Have you read their clause for account handling? They can for any reason and for any amount of time short of indefinite, seize the money. Basically the longer the money sits in the account waiting for Whedon and company to take it, the juicier a potential technical problem becomes on PayPal's end. They've done it to a few New Orleans/Katrina relief funds, they've done it to the Anime Corner Store - you basically forfeit all rights to any money you give them, and if there's a dispute, historically your chances of getting ... 60% of your money out of the account are a housecat's chance on a Reaver vessel. The class-action lawsuit against PayPal is still in effect for Pete's sake. Don't do that!

Maybe some Swiss bank account that would build up with outrageous savings interest that everyone had a wiring number for (wiring as in one-way transfer of funds). Setting up with a real bank would make easier automated withdrawals from checking - $60 for aDSL, electricity, water, $50 for the Keep us Flying Fund ....

I'm serious about this. No more 'mock pledges'. C'mon, $50_USD a season? $100_USD a season? Didn't someone put a 2-million-dollar pricetag on a single episode? Make known a real fund, a real account that people could donate to, preferably in a real bank; make it known to all ships, and it would cost the supposed millions of firefly fans out there less than a US-dollar an episode.

The only people who don't like the series are those who haven't seen it. Can anyone get ahold of people?

GLOBLABSURDITY

I will donate $100 to whatever cause will help to get either another FF season started, to buy the rights from FOX, or to get another BDM into our theatres ASAP. My only demand is for the same crew to be a part of this effort, because they are what make Serenity fly. Along with Joss and his creative writing crew. I will also pledge $100 a year in this effort for the next 3 years. These are some very talented actors & writers, as you all well know, and can't be blamed for taking new & profitable jobs as the powers that be let Serenity & it's crew crash & burn. I am a home-school mom--this is the best we (the family) can do before I go back to work again.
You guys know it takes MILLIONS to get all of this done. Perhaps if we could find a director that is a believer in our BDM or some high up exec.--someone with the money to really pack a punch in getting the powers that be to pick their heads up--to get the ball rolling with some excellent marketing of the movie or series, well then--that seems like it would make more of a difference. This pledge would help push it through--however, I don't think they'd take our monies. That could have extensive legal issues, I'm thinking, with our sue happy society being involved. To their way of thinking, I'm sure. Either way, you can bet on my donations anyway--let's just DO SOMETHING...
Cheers, my FF friends!

One more thing. Has anyone ver brought up pestering sci-fi to know end about starting new episodes? I thikn they did that for Babylon 5 didn't they? I mean they are showing reruns and all and if they gave it a better time slot they could get better ratings. Plus there are a lot of new fans now that the movie has been made and doing so well. Apparently the movie got made because of all of the crazy obsessed fans out there. If we all got togetther and e-mailed sci-fi like once a week each they would have a lot of messages. So many that they may just decide to do it themselves. This is their type of show, they have a huge fan base drooling for it, hey can make truckloads of money off of dvd sales for the seasons seeing how much Firefly/Serenity fans like dvds. Has anyone ever actually started some regular letter writting campain involving everyone out there to them. I would suggest Fox but they, as we all know, are about as bright as the bottom side of a rock and need to be beaten like redheaded step-children from Arkansas.

I think they if they really know how many people out there are still holding onto this idea that they might be more inclined to start new episodes themselves. If they can get rating and make money themselves they may be willing to do it without our financial support.

Problem is that people DO want to see returns on their investment... that means that if we want corporate support (which we need, we'll not get enough for the series on our own unless a millionaire falls in love with it) we can't go web-only. The only web thing to go well so far is Google. That doesn't bode well for us.

Straight to DVD? Could happen, but I don't see a big company like Universal and Fox (I understand there's some weird sharing issues with the rights going on) doing something like that unless they see a big return in the pipeline (anyone know what the total sale figures of the Firefly boxed set are so far?). And I'm not sure a straight-to-DVD release would secure that; ok, we have big sales now, but that's after a TV series and a film. Subsequent releases won't get as much exposure.

So far the only viable release seems to be the return of the TV series, or another film. Joss seems to be going in the direction of films at the moment (Wonderwoman etc), plus the fact that he doesn't have much time on his hands for anything at the moment. All of these point towards another film release over that of a series.

Not entirely sure where I'm going with this, but just trying to build a framework for it around what could be possible.

Possible idea: Firefly is Joss' baby, and so if we could get a proper web PR campaign involved on ebay for a fictional representation of the contract, marketed that "the funds raised here will go towards buying Joss the contract", and before the expiration date get as many people to group together for a single bid (à la Operation Browncoat for Mal's coat), hook a Fox/Universal executive at the final figure buy the rights and give them to Joss to do with as he wishes.

Sound reasonable? I'm afraid I can't contribute anything to such a bid right now, my finances aren't exactly stable, and there are better places money can go when I do have it.

Anyway, you know the Sci-Fi Channel can't go much past 12 episodes w/o calling that a "season." So, calculator-in-hand, that's $300. No problem, since I'll watch it over and over and over again. Not a bad investment. And how many times did you see the movie at $10.50 a ticket?
