No, I'm not proposing that River is Odo's long lost sister.

I'm referring to the movie poster.

See that odd-looking female in the upper left of the poster? She's also visible on the cover of the Serenity soundtrack CD. Does that look like River to you?

I didn't think so. Looks like a glam shot of an actress named Summer, maybe, but it's not our River.

Now pull out your copy of the Visual Companion or the novelization. Take a look at that girl in the upper left corner. Looks familiar, doesn't she?

The rest of the image looks very much the same (the CD cover was reworked a bit for the square form factor, but otherwise is a copy of the poster). Mal glowers. Serenity goes to full burn. Papayrus font. Matrix-y overlays with words like "FUGITIVE" and "REBEL".

But on the VC and book cover, River has assumed her normal form. Chin down, untidy hair across her face.

I think I would have liked the movie poster a lot better if they'd used the version that's on the VC cover. Anybody with me?

The American version of the movie poster used the same or similar pic (one pic of her was preliminary, one was actually used) and people complained about it both times. Now they complain again. How ironic.

I don't think that River, to be River, always has to look like loony girl w/bad hair...
in 'Safe' when she was dancing she looked happy and beautiful,
and in 'Shindig' when she pretended to be an Irish girl & messed w/Badger's head she looked mysterious and beautiful...

and in the movie

Select to view spoiler:

during the bank robbery when she came in, being all psychic girl, with the long sleaves and the graceful movements...she wasn't crazy then, she seemed very together and attractive...
actually when she went all killer/weapon in the bar (when she was triggered) I thought she looked pretty amazing then too

I don't see why only Summer can be seen as glamorous...I think River can be too....

It seems you feel I was complaining. I didn't intend to.

What I was trying to say (and maybe was being too cute about it) was that there are two versions of the same image, one with a picture of River that I like better than the other.

It took me quite a while to realize there was any difference, so I thought I'd point it out and see if anybody else noticed, or cared.

Embers: I'm sure River can be glamorous, but I don't recall any scene in either the movie or the series where she looked like she did on the movie poster. Have you seen both versions, and if so, do you have a preference?

I would have said I've seen three versions:
the first was kind of rough and spooky looking, even a little glum...
(the one that ended up on the cover of the Visual Companion)
the second was kind of arch/superior...she looks more powerful
(that's the one that ended up on the US movie posters)
and the third is a sexier more sultry look
(the one they are planning to use for the DVDs)

none of them look much like she did in the movie
neither does the over-seas poster look much like she did in the movie....
but I don't have any big preference,
I'm pretty much satisfied just to get the product (ie The Visual Companion, the movie, and the DVD)
the packaging is kind of not even a consideration.

I will admit that the fan art is much more beautiful and looks a lot more like River in the movie, particularly this one by our own 11th Hour:

That’s a wonderful piece of fan art.

As Iv said on many occasions Im not a fan of Serenity’s poster campaign. And as iv said before im pretty sure that is not Summers body in the European poster (The one with the sword and the axe that im forced to look at every day when I log on to this website).

Europe (particularly Ireland and England) have a history of bad Movie posters that don’t fit the movie or the characters. Anyone ever seen the English posters for Army of Darkness?

Who do you suppose is in there?

That's the first I've seen of that piece and, frankly, it's gorram beautiful. Perfect, even. I want to see it everywhere, all the time.
