Like a favorite disease...it is spreading. I went to belly dance class last night, and as we were leaving, one of the girls GASPED rather loudly and proclaimed "You have FIREFLY!?!?!"

Our instructor had the set sitting on her desk plain as day. The instructor had just borrowed it from a friend of hers. This (naturally) sparked a discussion between me, the other student and the teacher. Of the 3 of us, I was the only one who saw the series when it was originally aired. The other two had been lent copies by friends. I explained the story about the series and its sudden but inevitable betrayal and they were shocked since the series was, and I quote..

"The best TV show I have ever seen!"

Anyway, some of the other students are now curious and want to get copies (yeah!) and they are all anxious to get their hands on the movie DVD (YEAH!)

Looks like Firefly is contagious, and passed by casual contact :)

LOL
unfortunately it has been a slow moving virus,
but I have faith that there is no cure....

Sci-fi channel is going to continue showing 'Firefly'
so I think that more and more people will continue to become fans.

You betcha it's speading.

I got a call from my father-in-law wanting to know if *we* had seen this great movie called Serenity. First, he rarely goes to a theater to see a movie and now he's going again before it leaves. When he found out there was a TV show and *it* was out on DVD, it went to the top of his wish list for Christmas.

The tiny shifting of the snow has started to become an avalanche.

Definatly contagious. I bought the box set and was "casually" viewing it in the living room at the collective I live at. My flatmates came in and out of the room while I was watching.

The very next day I come home and find them glued to the TV, they kidnapped my box and was having a marathon...

Some people seems to have delayed reactions :P

Yeah, my dad liked the movie too -- and he's really picky. He even laughed at parts, and he's got a very odd sense of humor (ie doesn't laugh at much) so I know it's good. Let's keep spreading it!
*coughs firefly germs on everyone*

I give to you the Seeker of Serenity, the Valkyrie Warrior, the Gourmet Cook and the Truth Scoper.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

It might be spreading slowly, but it is spreading. How many cancelled tv shows can say that, or that they had a major motion picture made?

All we need to do is keep right on doing what we have been doing; spreading the word. We keep loaning those DVD sets, talking it up on the internet, introducing everyone we know to the show. When the Serenity DVD comes out we buy as many copies as we can, some to loan, some as gifts, and a couple for ourselves.

Keep the faith people. Like Joss said, she's got legs. She'll keep flyin'!

I just bought the DVD-set. In a few days I've gotten my roommate _totally_ hooked. I mean, he is praising it - like really praising it, he's walking around saying stuff like; "I can't believe Firefly was cancelled, wtf were they thinking!?", and he keeps saying; "Dude, have you seen that show Firefly?" to pretty much everyone, lol.

A member of my roomie's band dropped by while we were watching Firefly today, and after it was done he asked if we could watch another episode :D

Contagious? Bloody pandemic!

It's funny how evangelical Firefly fans are. I've been talking about it with the folk I know, and it's great to hear how many of them say "Oh yeah, that was a great show."

I've also written an article about it in my online writing portfolio to try and spread the word: http://www2.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/1024362

Not to mention the fact that Firefly simplified my X-mas shopping as my dad is notoriously hard to buy for, but he recently bought a big TV and is a fan of westerns

Racing Heart
Sweaty Brow
Dilated Pupils

plus, the need to quote Jayne

It's funny. I just got my copy of "Finding Serenity" this morning and took it to class, while I was reading it, a gal from the next row said "Is that a good book?"

I asked if she was fimiliar with the the show, she has the DVDs. I'm always entertained when I bump into other folk who are fans. :)

I think it's a good simulation of how an idea can either die a quick death, or sweep through the populace like a pandemic.

What I really love to see is when it looks like the end is near, and then there's a sudden upsurge in activity, bigger than the one before!

Nice! I've only got 6 people by direct contact, but I know that some those have gone out and infected dozens more. I've had two failed conversions (hey, what can you do with a brother who prefers chick flicks?), but one of them refered to Firefly as a positive comparison to a bad scifi movie she saw, so it wasn't a total loss. Oh, and two possible converts, but I haven't seen them since to know.

I've got to get four more people to match you, though. I must strenthen my proselytization skills.

I encourage more to come out and boast of your far-ranging conquests. It's a good anglo-saxon virtue. Stupid Judeo-Christian "let's lie about how fucking awesome we are because admitting it would be wrooong." ::cue Faith-as-Buffy face::

That's funny because today in my History of the Middle East class we took the afternoon off and went to a local Lebanese restaurant. Our teacher invited several students from the local college (FSU) and the guy sitting across from me was from Lebanon and out of the blue he said "Yesterday I saw Serenity" and I said "That is so my movie!" lol and my friend next to me and I just started talking all about the movie with him. So awesome, you just never know where a fellow Browncoat will pop up.

I don't think this is quite what people mean when they tell me I'm "sick", but I've definately got the Firefly disease.

And I keep hearing it too. Every once in awhile, I'll bring it up, and a classmate will be like "You watch Firefly too?" or "I love Firefly!" I've met at least five other Firefly fans and made two more myself. My best friend Sam is a problem because she's against the show as she is against everything her mother likes.

But I'll work on her. Promise.

*after getting the English vocab sheet*
Me: "Sanguinary... hey, sanguine! There's a good Firefly quote about the word sanguine."
Sam: "Oh my GOD, Jackie."
Me: "C'mon! It's a good one! 'You sanguine about the kind of reception we'll get-' Hey! Don't be coverin' your ears!"

I desperately want to convert my flatmate, but he's incredibly stubborn and maintains that "Firefly is shit" despite having never seen it. He reasons that if it was cancelled quickly it must be rubbish, plus he likes annoying me :P

Anyone have any great plans for getting him interested? Once I get my DVDs back from my dad i might put them on his desk with a Post-it note saying "WATCH THEM BITCH!!"

Do you have rope? If not, your local hardware store carries it. So now you have means of securing him, you know where he sleeps, and you have the DVD's... At that point, "You have the choice between Firefly and reality shows for the next 24 hours," tends to work. I assure you, he'll be begging to watch Firefly in very little time.

VANCOUVER

Sent a copy to my three young neighbours from the countryside where I grew up--smart and handsome lads of 19, 17, and 14--and got a report back a few nights ago that all were converts except the middle boy, who liked it "okay" so far. But he said, "Even Dad is really into it"--Dad being a 55-year-old Marxist-intellectual logger-hermit from Belfast, and notoriously discerning about his viewing habits. Hah!

That means my dad, his best friend, will get sucked in. Mom already watched two episodes, had to turn it off because of "tension" (anything with any tension in it just kills her; makes it hard to find movies to watch with her...), but she "can see the appeal" and made me tell her how everything turns out, including in the movie. Hum. To tally, since Serenity was released and I got the Firefly set (next day), that makes about 10 for me.

I was talking to a friend the other day about how strength of sentiment, although more difficult to measure or apply than sheer numbers, must count for something, and shouldn't be so totally overlooked by studios and networks. (This was partly in connection with FOX cancelling Arrested Development, as well as, of course, Firefly.) This morning I thought of one very concrete effect: because there's nothing worth watching on TV, I don't subscribe to cable. If Firefly came back, I'd get reconnected in a red-hot minute. That's $80 a month the cable company is losing because of Fox's decision. I'm sure there's a measurable connection, also, between fans' love of a show and their inclination to identify with and buy the products advertised on the commercials. God, I'll buy 10 boxes of Tide a week, if I can only have my Firefly back!

This is a happy thread, and happy threads make me happy. Enough despair in the world: let hope spring eternal, even if it has to jump up and down on the same spot!

Vancouver

p.s.: we made it past the $36-million mark, worldwide, today: yay! Only 3 million-ish to make up for the break-even, and who knows: it could do that in rep, second-run, and the remaining first-run. It's still here in Vancouver, by the way.

(Since a lot of the increase is international, this would be a good time to give a hand to the Aussies, who are giving it such a great run down there. In case you missed the thread on this subject, someone crunched the numbers and verified that Australians are the #1 per-capita Serenity-goers. Thanks, all you down under!)
