uh... $30? I'm going to buy it. Everybody on this board is going to buy it, but did they not realize from the theatrical release there aren't as many of us as they might think? If the SRP is really $30, sales are going to be dreadful.

Edit (As this post is still getting replies): The above statement was made out of ignorance and is hereby retracted in the sake of not being one of the pessimistic people. Here's to more Serenity and millions of DVDs sold!

I think lots of DVDs are priced around 29 something, but you can get it around 17~23 anyhow. No one buys with "regular price" anymore.

Something that I've not seen mentioned when it comes to the box office take is that there are a lot of us out there who can not afford to pay full price for a movie. I never go to an evening show. It's just not possible. Keeping that in mind, I think there are as many of us as they think, we just can't pay full price for a chance to sit in a dark theater. However, I will be buying the video (or rather hubby might get it for me for Christmas...he's done things like that in the past) and I'll pay whatever the the going price is.

If there are not that many of us out there, who has been purchasing the original series, which costs between 30-50, depending on whether you find it online or in a store???

With so much pessimism by some on these boards, I'm amazed that the Browncoats have lasted as long as we have. I'm not trying to be harsh, but why so much bloody negativity?

Cheer up. All will be well.

Thirty dollars isn't bad and most movies are about thirty-two dollars, with tax. It's an average price and I'm excited about it. Most fans will buy extra copies for friends and family and I'm sure new fans (who didn't see the movie in theaters) will pick a copy up.

The fact that some of those so-called
deleted scenes especially regarding Inara's
stripped to shreds character (many regular
moviegoers couldn't figure out her story at
all because her character is so poorly served
by the release cut) were in fact included in
advanced test screenings makes it to my mind
essential to restore them to the body of the
film. That Joss refuses to do this makes me
reluctant to buy this DVD issue. Especially
also knowing that UNIVERSAL DVD's are the
poorest quality of any major studio and it
will be released again on a new format or two
new formats within 18 months.

Want to bet that around January of 2007 they
will boast that the HD disc version is a
director's cut that Joss now says he considers
this version to be prior to the SD DVD release?
Joss is not unknown for going back on his word
and if the studio pressures him he's not much
for not caving-in. I hope on this occasion he
will cave and does put back scenes relating to
character substance that existing early test
edits.

STORYMARK

Some people are acting like scenes were cut from the movie expressly to piss them off. All I can say is, calm down. Joss did his best to make Browncoats happy, make new viewers happy, and to tell a story he wanted to tell, all at the same time. Did it work? For some, yes. Other, no. But you can't please everyone, no matter how hard you try.

There are lots of reasons scenes get cut from movies. Some are the studios issues, some are the filmmaker's.

On the studio side, there is the running-time issue. The longer the movie, the fewer screenings per day, and thus less money. Serenity was about as long as most action/adventure film usually can go, without a big name director or actor.

On the filmmaker side, there are considerations like pacing and structure. And while we Browncoats may truely miss those extra character moments with Inara, the standard rule usually is that if a scene doesn't advance the story, cut it.

At least be happy they're on the disk. If this had been a bare-bones disk with nothing but the movie, I could understand being upset.

And Howard, we all know that you and others were unhappy with the changes between Firefly and Serenity, but the fact is the movie is not the show. Different mediums require different approaches. Just like a film adaptation of a novel, comic book, or any other medium, the original source material is not going to make it to the screen without a few changes. Even more so in the case of Serenity, which had to be made to appeal to those who had never seen the show.

Personally, I'll be picking up the Big Damn DVD at midnight on Dec. 19. And I'm going to watch the hell out of all of it.

LOL! Yeah, my first thought too!

The way-cool Aussie poster is high up on my list of reasons why Australia rocks.

I figure when we get our sequel (which we will get!), Universal'll have had a few years of earnings, and have learned somethin'.

Recently, while checking boxofficemojo, I noticed a link to Serenity's status as #29 for "Action Heroine", clicked on it, and was elated to see that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's "wide" opening weekend earned "only" $8,647,295, compared to its final gross of $128,078,872. That might be a good model to cheer folks up! http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=crouchingtigerhiddendragon.htm

One other ting I would point out:

I think we can assume that there will definitly be another DVD release down the road. It's pretty much the nature of the DVD beast now, particularly with a movie with a built-in audience, like Serenity.

Especially since this is Universal. They pretty much invented the "double-dip" in DVD's. Almost any high(ish)-profile film they've ever released on DVD gets another eddition down the road.

If we get a sequel, you can bet ther'll be a Serenity special edition with previews and behind the scenes stuff on the sequel.

And if not, we'll likely see an extended cut. Note I didn't say director's cut. Joss has said that the theatrical version his his preferred cut, but it's not unrecedented to have an extended cut that's not the "director's cut". The Alien extended edition comes with a letter from Ridley Scott explaining that he still prefers the original. Even Peter Jackson says that the theatrical cuts of the LOTR films are his "director's cuts", and the extended cuts are just that...extended.

Hmmm.

Gues I'll have to be the voice of dissent on this one. I'm not lovin' the DVD cover.

It's just a bit too... "photoshopped together video cover" for me. Along the same lines of the Staw Wars DVD covers, which I'm not fond of.

I still think the Australian poster is the best one I've seen. The DVD cover looks like a sci-fi channel movie.

That's the same reaction I had when I saw the American movie poster for Serenity. Looked more like Inara than River at first glance.

The VC and novelization have a MUCH better picture of Summer on the cover, one that actually looks like River.

I definately agree.

I have both editions of all of the LOTR movies. It's not too much. It's also convinient if you want to loan out Serenity, but want to keep a copy, just in case.

But I'm definately getting the DVD. Probably for Christmas. Ever since I heard the rumors about the December 20th release date, I've been hinting at my parents to get it for me. "You know, Serenity is coming out on DVD RIGHT before Christmas..."

I'm so excited! But I had better try and see it in the theaters again. I've only seen it twice. But it will be at a second-run movie theater near my house, so I'll probably see it multiple times there.

I watched the series on Fox when Fox butchered it. I still liked the show even though Fox butchered it. I bought the DVD set and I'm surprised that they haven't disintegrated from being played so much. I've seen the BDM 4 times and I'm going again tomorrow or thursday before it leaves the bargain theatre and is gone from my area for good. When Dec 20th comes I'm going right out and buy the movied DVD and I don't care whether I pay full price or not. If they come out with a Director's Edition in another year or 18 months then I'll buy that too! I own the theatrical releases of all 3 Lord of the Rings movies and I also bought all 3 Extended Versions of those films as well. I just hope Joss gets a good chunk of all this money I'm spending just like I hope Peter Jackson got a good chunk of all money I've spent on LOTR.
If they don't make a sequel they're idiots that don't care about making money.

I loved the show, loved the movie, and will love the DVD. If the powers that be create another flick, great--if not, it was good fun while it lasted. Someone a long time ago said something about too much suffering being caused by holding on to things, you know?

I'll be picking it up when it comes out, maybe later, but I'll be picking up the film. Until that time, I'll enjoy the series that we have, think of what could have been--and move on.

Howdy doo, whoa - that is one busy cover! great to see that news of the DVD is being released in time for all those Serenity/FF Withdrawl symptomatics out there! (that does included me!)

Unfortunately i'm on the other side of the pond and awaiting a R2 release which i have found on Amazon, but the artwork is different - not sure if it will stay this way but i don't know if i prefer it or not, wasn't sure about the posters when they first came out, but having seen the movie they kind of grew on me. Guess they are appealing to different styles of audience???

Nah no way is that our Region 2 box art, it's just a placeholder image.

Most likely we'll get a more subdued cover, probably less glitzy and might just be the logo on a black background or something. We often get very different covers to our American cousins who seem to favour the bold in-your-face designs (or so the marketing people think anyway).
