Just taking a look at the box office figures as reported on boxofficemojo, the takings for Serenity may not be stellar, but its sure less of a disappointment if compared to other films.

Legend of Zorro opened with $16 mill, but against a budget of $75 mill.

Doom is slipping down the charts, having taken just over 1/3 of its $60 mill budget.

Elizabethtown (probably the closest in terms of budget to takings to Serenity) is at 50% of the budget and just left the top 10.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is presumably building its audience through word of mouth, but with a budget of $15 mill best start going soon.

Lord of War has collapsed with 1/2 of its budget left hanging.

Its going to have to go some in the DVDs to make much more than a small profit, but it seems to have a decent shot of not losing anyone any money.

EMBERS

I agree, and I think it should be posted occassionally...
'Serenity' got very good reviews, which is going to help with DVD rentals & sales,
but the fact is: it isn't out of the theaters yets.

The current figures are here:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=serenity.htm

Domesic: $24,845,485
over seas: 9,017,070

current
total $33,862,555

Serenity is still showing in 309 theaters in the US and although that number will keep going down, it is still doing some good business in some of the larger cities...so we can hope to continue to push the domestic box office amount up
AND Serenity is still opening in many over seas markets,
just because it was pulled from some places doesn't mean Universal has pulled it everywhere:
Serenity will premier in Germany on Nov 24th
and many other countries over the next month or two:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/releaseinfo
so we can expect the over-seas box office amount to continue to grow before the DVD is released.

At the São Paulo International Film Festival Serenity is being shown in the 'New Directors' catagory:

All this is before the DVDs are even up for sale.

Oh, and I hear that the Sci-fi channel plans to continue showing 'Firefly' reruns...which I think will help the 'Serenity' DVD sales & rentals.
