After seeing Serenity, I felt compelled to check out the DVD of the show, which I never really knew about.

This is the most remarkable television show that I've ever seen. I've purchased my own copy of the DVD and viewed the entire series three times. I've shown several friends the shows, and not surprisingly, they were immediately hooked...including buddies of mine who abhor the sci-fi genre.

While I know about Joss Whedon and was a semi-fan of Buffy and a big fan of Angel...Firefly is just...special. I almost wish I hadn't bought the DVD's because watching them is almost heartbreaking. Only 14 to watch...while so many awful shows easily make it to 100 episodes...what I would give to see 100 episodes of this show.

I've never seen such a cohesive cast and such a believable, fantastical world assembled so quickly and with such heart. And I've never felt so compelled to try to do something...anything, for an art form.

If I won the lottery, I would privately fund the "completion" of this amazing story-even if it were only for me. But seeing as there is still a wildly active website, 3 years after the cancellation of the show, I imagine every avenue of resurrection has been explored.

These actors were born to play these rolls and this seems to be the story that Joss Whedon was born to tell. It crushes me to think that I've stumbled onto something so wonderful and it's already over. The writer is still here...the cast is still immensely capable and the opportunity will just roll right by.

While I'm glad that "I've found Serenity", I'm devastated to see so much potential go unrealized. If the fans ever rise up to privately fund the continutation of the show, please shoot me an email...I'd be happy to chip in :)

You smell so much like "contrivance". Sorry, nobody comes to such stellar conclusions without soulsearching all kinds of questions.

You could be a longtime lurker here but you're obviously not. You're just a "Post something dramatic and hope for responses" kind of clown.

You'll get what you want, and firefly will die a little bit more because of you.

Thanx-u for whatever it is you're non-contributing.

Welcome Starkenfast (what a cool name, what is that from?)!
We love new and articulate Browncoats...
(don't be put off with the bitterness of those who got so attached to 'Firefly' that they have disowned Joss' beloved 'Serenity' as a changling).

It is thrilling how many new fans have come to this website,
I encourage you to really look around...
there is a lot of wonderful stuff all through the BlueSunRoom
(archival goodness)

Now, you'll notice in my signiture other avenues of Firefly/Serenity enjoyment which MUST be explored!

enjoy!

I actually agree with them... sorry that post was meant to be a response to another post. I open up multiple browser instances reading things and somehow I misplaced this post trying to respond all hastily-like.

Trying to do 10 things at once. Was truly an accidental misdirection of a post.

Bah NM the 'scuses... this thrashing was meant for another poster, not u. My apologies.

Pay no attention to Xero. We're happy to have you here! Welcome to the sweet melacholy that is Firefly/Serenity fandom. Like Mal--it hurts, but you learn to live there. Take a look around, post on the boards; just get involved! And again, welcome aboard.

Welcome!!!

We like new browncoats!!

And, yes, I know what you mean. I found the DVDs in May this year and they were brilliant, but heartbreaking for all the reasons you describe. It's so sad to see all the crap they put out on tv that gets picked up season after season and know that Firefly was dropped after 14 episodes.

Ignore him. I actually give alot of thought to where I spew my "piss & vinegar" posts. When I wrote that, the person to whom I initially directed it to had it coming. I just (for the life of me) can't seem to remember whom that was.

Suffice it to say, if and when I ever remember who the hell it was (or find the original post in this ocean of repeat posts), I'm gonna say that to them (and not you). I'll say it all over again with some added "well-rehearsed piece of my mind" about how I persecuted some innocent person thinking it was them. All the more reason to hate them.

Ok that's kind of tacky. I suck, and I'm sorry.

Was truly a collateral damage thing.

Hate is never healthy.

Why not go back and edit your first post in this thread, if it was indeed erroneous? It's more than a little jarring, and I can't imagine the reaction a new Browncoat would have if their very first attempt to reach out to our community was met with such vitriol.

I'm just glad my own first post didn't have that sort of response! (Actually I don't think it got any reaction at all... )

I edited your post a bit but what's stated above is exactly the way I feel. I was just thinking about the $340 mil powerball. With that kind of cash, you could finance quite a few seasons of Firefly.

I'm a fairly new Browncoat as well, and although I was introduced to Firefly by the SciFi Channel's reairing the eps...my basic story is the same. Immediately fell in LOVE and now I catch myself actually heart in throat when I think of how wonderful it would be to have episodes of this caliber to watch!

I loved the movie...and like you I've gone slightly mad.... I'd chip in ( and have, buying all kinds of stuff... never done that in my life!)
to keep this story alive.

But we mustn't give up hope.... Joss is aware of our love for this and shares it and Universal is not foolish, they will see that a trilogy is possible. Maybe SciFi ( who is making money on the reruns, you know they are) will see that Firefly NEEDS to be in their Friday night lineup.
And I think the actors would do it, from what I've read. There have been so many new people here, who have seen the movie, then the series and gotten hooked. I think the demand for more will just get bigger!

Share your DVD's if you can part with them long enough to, I had to buy a second set, because I couldn't bear to be without them.... they will make new Browncoats with every viewing.

Oh, and welcome! This place is very shiny and the people here are great!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site Starkenfast! Glad to have you aboard!

Congrats on getting some of your friends interested in the show. Have you seen the movie "Serenity" yet? If not, be sure to hit a theatre while it is still around & check it out.

You expressed pretty much how all us browncoats feel. Overjoyed to have found Firefly, but heartbroken it was axed by a network that was clueless on what they had in their hands. We have all been there, but at least you are coming in now while there is the DVD set, the movie, books, cards, etc. Back in the dark days of "hiatus" it was pretty tough on us. Things got better because we refused to give up. Paid off for those that stuck it out.

Be sure to introduce the show to everyone you know. The more the merrier!

Keep the faith & keep flyin'!

Thanks so much for all of your responses. It really surprises me to see how active this forum is. I'm guessing that your traffic has spiked significantly since Serenity's release.

I remember when the promo for Serenity was airing, they were showing all these hoards of fans lining up outside the theater and coming from every which way...I believe I called them freaks at the time :) Anyway, it made me wonder how large the dedicated community actually is out there. If Serenity ticket sales are an indication, it's not a massive group, but I wonder if it could be large enough.

It seems like in the DVD era, the idea of a publicly funded show isn't totally wacky. If every Firefly fan paid 60-70 dollars for a full new season, I'd imagine that would add up to a pretty decent amount of money. You have the majority of the money go to production, cast/crew salaries and a very small portion goes to DVD production. That way, those who chip in are basically "pre-ordering" the DVD of the next season. This would only cost about 10-20 dollars more than the average full-season DVD of a tv show. If a network had even a sizeable chunk of their production expenses covered, they'd be nuts not to at least throw Firefly (with a small, but already established fan base) into their programming lineup...even if it's some late night time slot.

Now who's the freak? ;)

Anyway, as you can plainly see, I'm more of a dreamer than an economist, but it was just a thought. Thanks so much for the link to the unproduced show. Reading it lends even more proof to how focused Joss Whedon's vision was and how true the cast made these characters, because I can see it play out in my head as easily as if I were watching it.

For those who asked, Starkenfast is the name of a knight from some Old English poem I read way back in high school. If I recall, the character was a coward, but not many people know that and the name was just too cool, so I grabbed it and have had it ever since :)

Anyway, thanks to all for the warm welcome.

Yeah, welcome to the community Starkenfast. This is a lively site. Unfortunately, there aren't as many of us as we hoped, judging by the box office dollars. But that's OK. This fan base will continue to grow. Can't wait for when Serenity hits the rental shops.

Jesus Xerogravity!!! what is your problem??

Anyway, welcome starkenfast, I'm still new here also, but I must say that I really liked your post. You came to the correct point of view regarding Firefly and Serenity and for that your place in heaven is secure.

I don't know what is wrong with Xerogravity that would make him want to say such mean things, but I suppose it takes all kinds to make up the 'verse, so bare with it.

The fact that Firefly didnt even get 100 episodes baffles my mind; I'll never understand it, I do suspect that there are certain FOX executives that are going to go to that "special" hell, so revenge will be ours!!

Anyway, welcome and you are in the right place. Almost all the people here LOVE Firefly, so your experience here should be fun.

See ya

I'm really happy to hear that the DVD sales are going well, anything to help encourage the studio to pick up the franchise option! I too never got a chance to see the series on tv but caught up with the box set. It breaks my heart that intelligent, funny, compelling entertainment can't get more traction on the small screen!
