I've been wracking my brains thinking how Book and/or Wash can appear in future movies (other than in flashback or using some cheesy Scifi gimmick to ressurect them.
Still no closer to coming up with a way for Wash to return, and I'm inclined to think he will only appear in flashbacks, but Book...
What if he faked his own death? There are still things we don't know about this man, and he would certainly have the knowledge (and possibly the neeed) to do something like that.
During his exchange with Mal he says he doesn't need to tell Mal about his past. What if he said that because he knew he was planning to disappear for some reason?
Now, I'm NO way suggesting that he orchestrated the attack on Haven, but he guessed that The Operative would be going after Mal's friends. Maybe, when the attack came, he decided to make it look like he had died.
Of course, there's the issue of his funeral. Just occurred to me. I'll just ignore it cos it kind of ruins this whole theory (which I'm already quite fond of)

"Gorramit Mal... I've forgotten my line."

Perhaps if Book was injected, or injected himself, with the serum that makes you appear dead but really asleep, he could have been buried and then retrieved later by someone else. I believe the serum lasted a week's time.

Yeah, there was a funeral... but was that on Mr. Universe's rock, bakc on Miranda, or what? I was inclined to think it was still on Mr. Universe's moon-thingy, since Serenity couldn't really fly anyplace. That said, either they took Book's body with them when they left Haven, or they buried/did something with his body previous to the funeral, and that was just a symbolic ceremony. And really, those shrines didn't look to be on graves, per-se, but maybe just markers for the purpose of remembrance. Not graves 'cause there weren't any bodies, because Book faked his death and is covert and tracking the newest ex-Operative, the man responsible for wiping out his flock, and the Alliance took Wash's barely-alive/freshly-dead body and froze it to fix him and try to use him to get Mal and/or River... could be interesting. Yeah, I like Book faking his death, or maybe doing an Elektra-type of preservation. Shiny!

i say let them be dead. im very sad that they are gone, but having them come back to life would ruin the story in so many ways. sorry to bring a downer comment, but looking at the whole buffy thing where angel went away and came back was just too weird. i don't know, it's all up to joss, and if he did bring them back, he could find a tasteful way of bring them back.

I think ( acoording to the preacher-with-a-past theory, that Book merely fell back into his life of ... whatever, possibly even helping the crew's foes.

DREAMTROVE

I think the solution is easy:

season one is only 1/2 a season
the movie is a season 2 opener
Joss plans to tell the second half of season one, when book and wash were still alive. This isn't a cheesy flashback, it's more like a prequel, but in tv format.
