Anyone else play Wing Commander: Privateer back in the day, and feel moved to play it again after Firefly?

Yeah, long, strange rhetorical question, but if you know what I mean, or am curious, there's a couple of remakes out there that are worth a look.

Gemini Gold is the "purist" model, while the straight Remake is a bit more modernized. While not perfect, I'm leaning towards the Remake, but that's just because it runs better in some areas and is easier on the eyes.

Both are open source and free for download.

Seriously, though, anyone else remember this game?

of course it was the first thing i thought of when I saw the Serenity the pilot. Another game with the flavor is Hardnova , even older than privateer, rpg, with smuggling runs, drop ships for delivering cargo, and shootouts. Best game I ever played.

Certainly do remember it, and fondly. My main complaint with it is sfaik there's no way to play it under WinXP. I once tried pages of tweaks, trying to get it going, all to no avail. More's the pity.

I managed to get it going under a program that acted as a pc emulator under XP. Strange concept; it was written exactly for this type of use, but I wasn't thrilled with the results. It wound up being too choppy and slow to get good gameplay. I'm on a 3 gigahertz+ AMD processer, so it wasn't due to slowness on the pc side. If you'd like I'll try and track down what program I used; your mileage with it may vary. Especially if you're on an Intel processor; I've no idea if my AMD was part of the issue.

Sure, I'd be interested in playing with it. I've got a 3.4GHz P4, so again if it bombs it wouldn't be a processor issue.

Thanks!

Gemini Gold: http://priv.solsector.net/
(For a more authentic Privateer experience)

Remake (my recommendation; updated in many ways, esp. with in-flight graphics):
http://wcuniverse.sourceforge.net/

These run under XP. I'm already up to Centurion with four MilSpec Tach guns.

Very interesting; I'll check those links out tonight, and thanks for them.

I always was more interested in getting the good through than in getting tangled up in fights, and as I said I have very fond memories of the game. Tried Freelancer but the experience (especially the horrific, repetitive "conversations") was just too painful to bear.
