Is this what passes for science fiction?

I went to see the Reese Witherspoon movie I was talking about last time, but I tore my pants on my doorframe on the way out. By the time I had changed pants, I would have missed the previews, so I decided to play Jackie's Movie Roulette and see whatever movie was playing next when I got to the theater. Sometimes it's a bust, but sometimes, you're pleasantly surprised and you get a Something About Polly. That movie made me want to buy a ferret for months.

This time, I wasn't so lucky. I went to see a movie that, like Dukes of Hazard was based on a TV show. The movie was called Serenity. Now, I've never seen the original Serenity series. In fact, I had never heard of it, and I write about this stuff, for the love of Pete. It was a space series, which I usually like, but there was something that bothered me about it.

After about an hour into it, I figured it out. There were no space aliens! Why make it a space movie if you're not going to have any aliens in it? Why not just make it an earth movie? We've all seen aliens in movies before. We know they exist. So why not show them? I guess the cast was really good, but they would have really been better if they had a space alien to play off of. (two stars)

Is that what passes for a review on The Onion? I hope that's just a tongue-in-cheek column, because if it were meant to be serious it's a dismal statement about the value of the site in general.

Umm... Yeah, it's tongue-in-cheek.

Let's see:

1) it's the Onion.
2) it's Jackie Harvey's "On the Outside" column
3) he ripped his pants on the way out the door...

need I say more?

I'd like to watch the original Serenity series. Do they sell that?

This is about as bad as the imdb review. Who writes such drivel?

A sw-what?

Ah, well. Never heard of either entity until this thread, content never to hear of either of them ever again.

Hi guys,

You can all calm down; this is definitely a spoof. For any who may not know, The Onion is a satirical "news publication" that basically riffs on just about everything.

For example, their major headline story this week is "Study Reveals Pittsburgh Unprepared For Full-Scale Zombie Attack." It's really a hilarious site (theonion.com), made all the more funny by the fact that they approach their ridiculous subject matter with all manner of self-important journalistic cliches.

The Jackie Harvey column is a parody of entertainment journalism - magazines like "Us Weekly" which pretend to be legitimate film publications but are more often concerned with whether Angelina Jolie is pregnant and how Jennifer Aniston is handling the news, or whether the new "Bennifer" should still be called "Bennifer" or "Bennifer2", and so on. He also frequently misspells celebrity names, resulting in things like "Tim Hanks", "Lisa Minelli", or "Elizabeth Shoe." Basically, the schtick of the column (and the Jackie Harvey character) is that he sometimes comes close, but never quite "gets" what he's talking about.

In other words, it's all fake. If you check out Rotten Tomatoes, you can find a link to the actual Onion A.V. Club review of Serenity, and as I recall it was more or less positive.

The REAL Onion review for those who missed it. Please keep in mind, these guys usually don't like any movie.
