Okay, my dumb question is this
early in the movie, during the oner that takes Mal through the ship
while he is arguing w/Simon

Select to view spoiler:

why does Simon give Mal a hypo?
I don't remember them discussing the need for the shot...
and I don't remember any mention of it afterwards.
so I'm confused.
Can anyone help me?

I'd appreciate your explanation/thoughts/ideas...

You know... I've wondered about that myself.

Standard innoculation. Early in the tracking shot, when Mal first meets Simon, he says (paraphrasing), "Guess I need to get innocked before we hit planetside."

No big mystery.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Mal tells Simon in the hallway that he needs to be "inoced", short for inoculated, before going planetside. Most likely to ward off any nasty bugs or illnesses that might be on the world they are landing on.

I did not catch what Mal said the first couple of viewings, but did recently & it is definitely telling Simon he needed to be "inoced".

Good question. Could be a immune booster of some sort. Maybe a tetanus toxoid booster shot. They're were landing on a rather less sophisticated world. That would be most useful for the bullet and knife wounds the crew occasionaly gets.

Somehow... I doubt that the Reaver harpoon that got Jayne in the leg was clean... much less sterile. Especially if you dare to think how many other victims it may have been used on. (Shudders)

With the meds the doctor brought with him, it makes sense he would have some in store and that he would value the need of keeping the crew up-to-date on them. And more then likly Mal and Zoe would know the importance of immunizations with their battlefield experiences.

Not to mention the two weeks after the Battle of Serenity Valley where they both sat and waited to be extracted with no supplies. They witnessed many soldiers dying from relatively simple and small wounds. Without medicine, medical aid, food, water, etc. those small and simple wounds got infected, and those infections spread to other body organs very quickly. Once an infection gets to internal organs, it becomes very difficult to contain, and that’s not including the complications that could occur from organ failures.

But... I think the main point was to show Simon stabbing that needle into Mal rather hard while they we're arguing. Ouch...

Once, just once, I want things to go according to
the gorram plan!

I spent a couple years at Coe, but that was a looooong time ago. I'd join you if I wasn't 1500 miles away now...
