Are these the US numbers? $4 mil for the #1 movie in the US seems awfully low.

Yes. Those are the US numbers. $4 mil has been about right the last couple of weeks for whatever reason.

Friday, Oct 7: Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit $4,021,574
Friday, Sept 30: Flightplan $4,514,799

Of course, maybe they seem low 'cause I was thinking weekend, not just Friday. I need more sleep.

Yes, domestic numbers. And you're right, VERY low, for all movies this time of year. I never realized how much "time of year" influenced a movie's opening but with watching BO since last April (the original Serenity opening date) I've been amazed at just how significant it is. That and people are going to theaters less and less (down 25% over last year).
On the other hand... dvd sales just before xmas, say for any scifi titles released on the 20th of Dec have a good chance of doing very well.

As usual 'the-numbers' guessing wildly. Boxofficemojo are better guessers.

It dropped less that I expected, wonder if awareness is setting in or if it was a fluke.

Hey, I'm real happy with those numbers. It's important to keep an eye on the theater count. Serenity is playing in about 500 fewer theaters this weekend than it was last weekend. That's a pretty steep drop in availability. So the fact that it made between $700,000-$800,00 on Friday is actually pretty solid. The key factor in observing the actual audience interest in a film is the per screen average. Movies in wider release (like The Fog which opened in nearly 3000 theaters) ultimately do better in terms of overall numbers, but often their per screen average is lower than films in smaller release. Given the theater drop, Serenity's per screen average might not be that much lower this week than it was last week. That's a good thing. It will show the Universal execs that people are still heading out to the movies and still looking specifically for Serenity, rather than just clunking down money for whatever's at the nearest multiplex. I'd imagine Serenity will close with $2-$3 million this weekend. That's pretty good for a cult sci-fi film. Keep it up guys! We're already at $20.6 million here in the US. It's going to finish short of the $80 million global take Universal indicated would garauntee a sequel, but given the positive audience response and the decent box office tally (not to mention what I imagine will be stellar DVD sales...I mean, if the series could sell 200,000 copies, the film must sell just as much or, right?). Let's just hope that people keep seeing the movie, that other countries continue to embrace it warmly, and that the people at Universal have the good sense to give us the sequel we deserve.

Only $20M after 2 full weeks... Where are we going to get the other $60M?
Them's an awful lot of DVDs... I'm gettin worried this will be the last we see of Firefly/Serenity :-( I hope i'm just being pessimistic.

I feel like a gnome obsessively keeping track of the movie gross. At the moment, a very unhappy gnome. I can't help but think that despite all the chin-forward buck-up rhetoric things are looking grim for any kind of continuation, at least in film/television.

Sure there'll inevitably be novels, I want Firefly in a visual medium, dammit. I never take well to literary interpretations of things I first knew on the screen (or vice versa).

As long as Serenity lingers in the 9-12 spot this weekend it will be fine.

There are pockets in the US where the movie is making a killing compared with the other films in the same cinema. That will keep it in those cinemas and continue to draw viewers. The cinemas themselves aren't as concerned with the overall gross of the movie, just their own demographic - is it making ME money in MY market compared with movie X and movie Y. Cities with 12/16 screen cinemas can keep it around a while.

I don't expect to see an increase in screens, but I bet it stabilizes at $400-$500 a screen on weekends and $200-$250 a screen weekdays as the screens drop down to about 1000. That would have it pulling in 2-2.5 million per week.

Well, it just seems that NO movies are doing well...even a big box office name like Jodie Foster didn't help Flightplan much, it hasn't made $30 million in the 3 weeks it's been out. And for all the number one movies to be pulling in only about $4 million in their opening weekends, just shows that movies aren't too popular right now no matter how good they are. I think it's because they are so expensive to go see, plus with gas prices the way they are people are avoiding driving, not to mention people are already beginning to try and save money for Christmas shopping. If DVD sales are really good and Universal considers the fact that no movies are doing too well in theaters this month, so Serenity has done comparatively well, they might do a sequel. Who knows? At least the movie got made!!

Out of interest, does anyone know if the revenue from the various fan preview screenings has been factored into Serenity's total yet? Not that I'm thinking it would make a great difference to the numbers, just curious.

I think we prefer the question, "How experienced are all you browncoats?" There was a thread on this a while back that might be worth visiting: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=4720 I seem to recall that the age spread was pretty wide.

And, on the topic of box office... Let's hope that the weekend estimates are off like they were a week ago. The actual take on Sunday last week was 30% better than estimated. Which means I should probably head over to the theater some time today to try and help out the numbers .

* edited to add: The estimates have Serenity taking in 2.3 million at the box office over the weekend. Based on similar movies (well, the only three that boxofficemojo provides free daily numbers on) a third week take of 3.3 million would be consistent. So the 2.3 million is average. I would consider anything higher than that to be a small positive. If Serenity dips under 200k during the week that would be troubling. Without a significant uptick the movie is on track to finish out the domestic run just north of 25 million. At this point I consider anything above 26.5 million to be a positive (based on the opening weekend numbers and the percentage of total box office that similar films made on a week to week basis - Serenity actually did slightly better during the second week than similar movies). The major obstacle is keeping the movie in theaters.

Too true, too true... SO, what you can do (the ole Browncoat Workaround, something we get used to livin' on the rim ) - Get your xmas list ready and on the First of Dec. go to Amazon and pre-order Serenity as gifts to be sent on the 20th to all of your unsuspecting friends and relatives... and the postman... and your cat washer... etc.

I'm not sure of where you are getting your numbers from.

Flightplan has made over $70 million so far and it made $25 million opening weekend.

$4 million is about what the #1 movie has received on Friday alone the last few weeks, not the entire weekend. That's still very low compared to years past and the summer, but it's still much higher than what you are suggesting.

I'm 47, and my daughter's are 19 and 27 respectively and my Mom is 72. The folks behind me in the theater tonight were in their 70's at least, and there were young ( your age) kids in front of us and couples and middle aged guys. Browncoats come in every age apparently. LOL

We live in a more rural area... closest big town is an hour away.... so I was happy that
the theater I was in today was about half full, more folks than the other day when I went, so I think word of mouth is beginning to work. People are talking about how much they LOVED this movie, and they are prompting others to go with their words.

In interviews, he's been saying that he wants the TV show back. There's a quote on some other site where he says his "rage" at the cancellation finally came out once the movie was done, and that rage is over losing the show and being forced to pick two hours' worth of ideas (for the movie) when really he has a much longer-term vision.

BTW, I'm just back from a rural area, where I had no access to a computer, and on checking things out on my return, I'm really impressed w/Serenity's performance in theatres. I thought that with all the big-name new releases, we'd be way down the list, but we're still at #12! Think about it, guys: that's amazing, for a film that, like, 1000 people knew anything about beforehand. (Exaggeration, but you know what I mean.) I think all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well (to quote someone besides Joss for a switch). I've injected three intellligent country lads, ages 14-19, with a strong desire to see it, and they can, because it's playing nearby, even in the boonies. Lots of access still, and lots of interest. $80 million was a ludicrous number for Universal to (purportedly) aim at, and $50 million domestic was, too, and I'm getting surer with every passing day that someone with sense, in some studio, will look at the role of DVD sales in building franchises, and put this back on either the small or big screen. I've said this before, but you only have to look at The Bourne Identity--or, for that matter, The Transporter--to see that studio execs understand how DVDs are a lot of people's first-look choices, and a new, prime way of gaining a following for a franchise. We will prevail. I really believe so, and I'm known for being a hard-headed realist (and right a lot of the time, about things like this).

I still want to know where the "Joss-stalking" exec from Universal has gone. It seems obvious to me that she is the one to track, and appeal to if necessary.

While Serenity and Firefly alike have a huge cult following within the scifi community, there's a lot of pepople out there who probably have seen the previews at the theatres and automatically decided that it wasn't the movie for them...several movie critics have cited that while Serenity is entertaining and good enough as a film production on a whole, the movie may not appeal to a mass or new audience as in being evidenced by the low numbers at the box office...it also may be too that the reason the box office is where it is at now is because of repeat business from all the loyal fans, going to see the movie three and four times. In any case, there is possibilty the film maynot even break even with it's $39 million production cost. Universal may even lose money in the long run if the the overseas box office doesn't coem through. Scifi films are hard to sell and even harder to keep afloat. Let's all hope that the DVD sakes will be phenomenal!

Hmmmmmm...Very very intersting. Could this indeed be the effects of the "slow burn" we have all been waiting for? Oh I am sure its too soon to break out the bubbly. But it is intersting. Whether or not it is intersting enough to keep the movie in the theaters is another matter.
