Methinks the second film (or season II of the new series) should take place during what I will, for lack of a better term, refer to as "The Reaver Wars".

Here's the thing... the whole system knows about the Reavers now, they're no longer just a spook story, and they're no longer just men who went mad on the edge of space. The Alliance made 'em, and they're a tangible threat.

SO...the Parliament, in effort to save face, sets one or two members up as scapegoats, make a big deal out of plausible deniability and mobilizes to wipe out "The Reaver Menace" in a grand PR gesture.

Film or season II could take place during said campaigns, or immediately after, when the System is trying to rebuild itself, because the Reavers turned out to be more of a challenge than one would think, and we could examine Mal's further regression into himself, unable to stop blaming himself for Book and Wash's death...further alienating Inara, who is FINALLY ready to 'reach out' to him, at least a little...and clinging (in a soldierly, platonic sort of way) to Zoe, with whom he's shared the grief of far too many losses to begin with.

That's all the SUB plot. I couldn't even BEGIN to come up with a CENTRAL plot for all of this to revolve around, but I swear, whoever suggests that we uncover a secret alliance cloning facility that reproduced Wash and Book...that person is gonna get slapped.

I think that this whole reaver+experiementation gone way wrong situation is gonna create a lot of dissention on the planets in the rim. I think it could even be enough to kick start a rebellion to the Alliance.

But I like your idea as well. Maybe it could be a combo of the two? That's why the Alliance is struggling with the reavers maybe, because they have this growing resistance within the Alliance to worry about now.

Oh and I think that they should come across a secret alliance time machine instead. Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, I do agree with you, bringing back dead characters in this kind of world would just be cheap.

While such events would certainly WARRANT a second rebellion, I don't think it's gonna happen, simply because the Alliance, by either coincidence or design, has managed to keep the frontier planets just 'rustic' enough that they wouldn't really be able to fight back.

I'm not sure there'd be much public outcry. You likely underestimate the power of the Alliance's PR machine, and how easy it is to discredit someone. The "Truth" could easily be that there were Reavers at one time, but 0.1% of a planet's population isn't much, and they're all dead now. Go about your business, nothin' to see, move it along.

So there're Reavers. Doesn't mean much to Londinium, or Osiris, or Sihnon, or Ariel. It's only folk out on the Rim that need be worried, most of whom likely already knew. I mean, imagine the Tam parents, who blithely ignored the evidence that their daughter was in distress. Can't imagine they'd be so quick to cotton to what they don't want to hear.

Like the Operative said, the Alliance regime is weakened, not destroyed. This'll come up in the next elections (elections in which, naturally, only the Core planets get to vote), then it'll be quietly swepped away with the "old" parliament.

I'm looking for more of an "oh crap what have we done" sequel. I'm hoping that the message topples some of the leaders of the alliance and new ones are put in place by Blue Sun. They gain almost total control of the government. We find out that we just went from bad to worse. Blue Sun starts taking away far more freedom from the people than the old Alliance brass ever did. Not sure how the crew will fit into all this, maybe the plot just shows how they deal with the knowledge that they were the catalyst that brought all this down on people while they are on the run from the now even more power happy government.

I don't think that the people on the outer planets are as helpless as some may think. You have to realize that these are frontier people, and if they are anything they are resourceful. They have found ways to survive in a place that was once unsurviveable.

Also, these outposts were setup for a reason. Which means that the Alliance has at least some stake in them. Perhaps there are valvable resources on them, like mining colonies, that the rebellion could use as leverage in the fight.

And it doesn't even have to be an all-out rebelion. Just a seperate goup of people that are clearly displeased with the Alliance and the way things are. So they try and do what they can to make things harder for the Alliance. I'm sure the crew of Serenity wouldn't mind doing what they can to help out...

EMBERS

I agree with Zeek that the Blue Sun Corporation will come into play, with their enforcers...the guys w/hands of blue....
Inara & Mal will fall madly in love while we learn her secrets, why she had left in the first place...

We'll get a lot of back story about Book, who was (once upon a time) deeply involved in the Govt/Corporate conspiracies of greed and coruption
(Book was to Blue Sun what Cheney is to Haliburton)

Zoe will be going through a crisis of faith,
having lost so much...only to find out that Wash's parents had genetically engineered a cloned group of identical sons (our Wash had been the LEAST successful) who are up to their ears in the Alliance machinacions....

Zoe & Mal & River will end up fighting the Washburn brother clones with the information they learned about Book and through Inara's troubles...

Kaylee and Simon will be allowed to develop a happy stable relationship (to be ended in the 3rd movie...).

followed by Inara's painful horrible death.

(of course I'm always wrong)

I'll take Wash back alive any cheesy way I can get him - can't be any cheesier than River the Reaver Slayer.
