There has been talk about this here before, but I am wondering what people think now they have see the BDM?

Do you think the market would support future episodes of Firefly going direct to DVD? Perhaps a disc with four or five episodes set between the tv series and the movie. We do have, after all, about six months of misbehavin' (series time) we missed out on.

Considering that episodes of the tv show often followed one right upon the other in "real time," there might even be a season and a half (30 or so episodes) that could be done that would feature the crew members who **spoiler**. Then perhaps, a few post-BDM discs to set the scene for the next movie?

The series compiliation DVD reportedly sold a half million copies. The BDM will likly appraoch or even surpass those numbers.

How well would a direct to DVD disc with four or five new episodes have to sell to make it profitable for the studios?

I'm not sure if the question is about studios. Direct to DVD is a new idea, as far as I know, and they're not likely to risk it. That means you’d have to do it on your own, more or less impossible.

On the other hand if the figure of half a million DVDs sold is right, and the figure of 2 million per episode is right, then that would mean if you made the exact same sales you’d need $4 per episode per DVD set. So for five episodes it would be $20, people would probably pay that. That’s just to break even though, not to make a profit.

Before that you also need to set up though, you need the set built and a place to put it.

If you could get the money to start up your five episodes you might be able to use the sales from that to make another five, but the odds of a profit don’t seem all that high to me. Certainly not enough to convince a studio to do it.
