saw this on--what's it called?--"bythenumbers.com" or something like that:

"We've already discussed the seven films, so we might as well finish out the rest of the top ten. There are two competing forces at work with Serenity; it has earned some of the best reviews for any wide release this year but it also has to deal with the dreaded Fanboy Effect. In these cases the latter almost always wins, which will cut the film's box office to just south of $5 million. On the other hand, Fanboy Effect also usually means strong home market sales, which will be the film's saving grace."

anywayzzz...

i noticed that serenity hasn't lost any theaters for the second week (in fact, gaining one), so there's a lot of space out there--a lot of seats--which i hopefully will see full when i re-watched the BDM. don't plan on getting no echo effect when i walk in, if you know what i mean. a lot of people are predicting that the new al pacino/matthew mconagh-who movie is gonna beat the BDM number-wise, but i hope not. i mean, the "fanboy effect" could be a plus--right? in case the non-browncoats aren't coming in after after the almost-universive positive reviews the movie's been getting, then it's up to us to keep supporting it by returning, over...and over...and over...and giving the gods that be the numbers that will ensure a sequel, or firefly, in the future. man, i feel like a junkie...must...have...more...firefly.

I've been talkin' yo a LOT of non-fans that say they intend to see the movie soon, or this weekend, I still have high hopes for word of mouth.
Plus- it got mostly GREAT reviews (that I saw).

I feel kind of dumb to ask, but what is the Fanboy Effect?

Hollywood is reeling (no pun intended) this year period, with few films having any Fanboy Effect. The fact that Serenity is not doing as well as anticipated is the same story of why nearly every movie this year has not done as well their respective studios hoped. SW:ROTS did well as expected, then Hollywood turns out over-hyped, under delivered crap all summer (save Batman Begins).

Another thing that may not bode well for the BDM is that it comes from a TV show, and I think that a lot of people are sick to the back teeth now of Hollywood reguritating material from other mediums. TV, comic books, video games, the list goes on. None have done their respective source material worse than old TV shows (Dukes anyone?).

This would be the real tragedy of Serenity, if people don't go see it because Hollywood mistepped so many times before.

"The last thing I want is that any of our descendents should look back in some years and despise us for not daring to act when we had so much capacity to act. We must dare to seek how, why and on what we agree. We shall thus be able to join together to look for alternative solutions and new ways of managing the world's challenges. Being diverse is our richness, acting together will be our strength". (Federico Mayor; 02-04-01;
