I know it's only wed. and the weekend matters but come on,what's wrong with America ;)! I know a lot of Browncoats are going Wed and Thurs in NYC,so hopefully that will help. This weekend people we gotta go as many times as we can.

No worries here.

I'm waiting to see it again this weekend. Everyone I know who's going is going this weekend. I think what we're looking at here is what would've happened to Serenity were it not for the Browncoats.

We are mighty. And we are not finished. WE HOLD!

It ain't over 'til it's over just wait it out you'll see. There is too much of a respose to be fully ignored, I mean I'd love to have more movies or shows but I can read so I'd be happy with books... SOMETHING will come of it I'm sure.

$68,479,335 to go. I know that sounds like a lot, but realize that the 5th Element, a far inferior movie, grossed $17,031,345 opening weekend and only $63,820,180 domestically. But worldwide (and Serenity hasn't opened in most of Europe yet) it grossed $200,100,000. Thats a total of $263,920,180. We need $183,920,180 less than a movie like 5th element made. We can do it. Have faith. And go see the movie more.

How the hell? How is it 4th in box office? What movies are beating it? It can't be 4th! Serenity is one of the best movies in theatres right now. Maybe only 40 Year Old Virgin is better, but its been out for months.

Well I'm not worried. Really if Joss wants to continue with Firefly with another season or movie or whatever, then he will some way some how. Even if he goes bankrupt and has to live on the streets, he will find a pen and right a novel on toilet paper.

Check out this thread for more info on box office take and rank discussion:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=13374

But basically, this week, it's been beaten up by History of Violence, Corpse Bride, and Flight Plan... But I think the "4th" ranking comes only from Tuesday's box office estimates... Overall, serenity is still 3rd so far in average theatre take.

Well... good thing that the only strong competition this coming weekend is "Two for the money" (Pacino and McConaughey) and that new Wallace & Grommet movie...

Argh!!! my eyes! Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are having a baby!!!

Don't worry us Brits will do our part. I'm off to see it tomorrow for the third time and I've forced at least two friends to go.

Hell I'll pay for others to go providing they spread the signal, it really is a great film

Definitely not to scaried about a sequel at this point, we grossed alot our first weekend. Hopefully we gross as much as the first weekend too... cause i think that says alot more then most movies , whos second weekend has a large dip in profits.

Per-screen averages (from the top 10)

1) A History of Violence ($563)
An anomaly considering the small number of screens it's on.
2) Flightplan $347
3) Serenity $320
4) The Greatest Game Ever Played $314
5) Corpse Bride $231

These are all skewed figures, seeing as how we're looking at one weekday, of course. For example, on Monday, Serenity's per-screen gross was greater than Flightplan's.

Serenity is not getting bumped out of theatres so long as it's what theatre owners are making the most on per screen. Which is what it's doing considering most theatres don't have A History of Violence.

Per-period averages don't really mean anything (as the link Jasonzzz provies shows). Two things that do matter:

1) Total cumulative gross (what the studio makes on the film)
2) Per-screen averages (Theatre owners determining what movies they keep)

Don't let the media's hyping of daily or weekend grosses get to you, that's not what counts for anything other than perception.

Something else to consider here is that Serenity dropped from $732,000 on Mon to $701,000 on Tuesday. That's not a terrible amount, and as others have said it's still doing well per screen. So, keep talking it up and going back to the theaters, especially on the all-important second weekend. We're a bit shakier than I'd like, but we're still flying.

People, there's a reason why your dietician tells you not to check your weight every day.

It's the overall weekly scores that count most. And Serenity opened at first place for new releases, second overall, with a very good per-theater take.

We're doing okay people. And since that $80 million figure that's been bandied about is for total international gross, okay is all we really have to do.

Besides, I have a feeling that once Universal sees the DVD sales in a few months, that we'll be in the slot for sequels. Theatrical release, more and more, is nothing but loss-leader for home video sales.

It's a sign of the times to come, but wouldn't just bet on it yet. These guys/gals jobs in the movie studios' side of the house depends on their ability to make money from movies with the ability to appeal . They don't get to keep their jobs for making some other division within Universal big money - not yet, anyways... It's true that's how the market is doing and responding, but when was the last time you've seen movie execs and studios getting the right idea on what's going on in the real world?

Ok, don't mean to have a blonde moment here but can someone please explain it to me in dummy-talk about the Box Office gross for Serenity? Like, do I really need to panic or what can I do for there to be a sequel or how much does it exactly need to make a sequel or can it possibly get kicked up a notch once it shown in Europe? And, even its in 4th can it still be made into a sequel? Y'know dumb questions like this. All this numbers and stuff I keep seeing is driving me nuts and I'm a ditiz when it comes to math. So can please someone explain it very simply to me? Like, "Box Office Grosses For Dummies."

There. I vented.

I heard that Serenity has to make $80 million worldwide to get a sequel. If Serenity goes by current trends, it'll only make about $25 million in the US, meaning that it'll need to make $55 million overseas. Although high DVD sales might change Universal's mind if it doesn't make $80 million worldwide.

XEROGRAVITY

It's funny. I loaned the Firefly DVD to a friend of mine I rarely see on Tuesday evening. I know him to be a diehard scifi fan, but one who hasn't ever seen Firefly. He told me he was planning on seeing Serenity, but it wasn't a rush thing. I urged him to check out the DVD first and he'd get all freaky about it like me. Wednesday evening, he informed me that he'd stayed up all night tearing thru the DVD and was off to go see the movie. He is predictably blown away (as are we all). Another one is bitten. And he is telling everyone he works with and all his friends with the same nutty enthusiasm I had (even asked me permission to loan out the DVD).

I think all of you are jumping to conclusions way too soon. The BDM is different from other films. It has us (it's own personal cult following). The other movies have big name actors that can draw in the crowds, but they can't keep them coming back again and again. Frankly the plots are dull and just a rehash of the same old played out story lines. That's why this movie is different, and that's why it'll soar past the 80 million dollar mark. The buzz has begun.

This is EXACTLY how Star Wars (the first movie) started out. Slow burn, that turned into a raging inferno. Have faith.

There's a lot of truth there. Adjusted for inflation Star Wars made less than $5 million opening weekend but a month later it made (adjusted for inflation) about $21 million in one weekend. It stayed #1 for almost a year making more every weekend than it did its first only starting to drop in December. Remember it opened in May. Though there was one drop in its third or 4th week to #3 but then it rose right back up. All figures and info are from boxofficemojo.com.

The difference, however, is that the 5th Element, though inferior, was a Luc Besson film, and Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, Leon, and even Taxi, which was remade as a Queen Latifah and What's-his-face stinker)is HUGE internationally. I don't think we can rely on 100-million-plus internationally, but I hope you international browncoats can prove me wrong.

Like a lot of you, I am watching the movie again this weekend to help push up Serenity's take, and hope that the plethora of positive critical reviews will bring out the Firefly virgins who will watch a movie that doesn't have a Jodi Foster or other bankable, recognizable stars.

The thing about trends is there are always exceptions, esp for a unique movie that has a lot of word of mouth. Check out these stats.

Evolution: opened at $13.4 mil, $38 mil domestic, $98 worldwide total
Mars Attacks: 9.3 mil, 37.7 dom, 101.3 ww
Galaxy Quest: 7 mil, 70 dom, 90.6 ww
There's Something About Mary: 13.4 mil, 176 dom, 369 ww (took 8 weeks to get to #1)
Fish Called Wanda: 4.8 mil, 62 dom (10 wks to #1)
Big Fat Greek Wedding: 3 mil, 241 dom, 368 ww (never made it to #1, but stayed in theatres for 51 wks)
Pulp Fiction: 9.3 mil, 107.9 dom, 213.9 ww

If they can do it, then certainly browncoats can do it. We need to hold.
