Simon had a completely different haircut. So did Mal, actually. Both have longer hair than they did in the series, and both have more modern cuts instead of the distinctly Old West styled cuts they used to have. It looks better and it's honestly more believable. And I want Simon's haircut.

Book had cornrows and a fairly bushy beard, where in the series his hair was pulled back into a bun (the movie is an enourmous improvement here).

Oddly enough, the women looked pretty good in the series, and the movie improvements weren't really as dramatic.

Everybody was sporting a lot more hair product than they did on Firefly as well.

Some of you seem to know more about guns than the average human. It was an interesting tidbit that Hollywood uses real guns with bits from the hardware store and old cat turds hot melt glued onto them. I will get a bigger kick out of movie guns after reading your post.

After my third viewing I was talking with some fellow browncoats and one said that he was surprised at Wash's death because Joss wasn't one to needlessly kill off characters. This got me thinking..... I cam to the realization that there are probabily a number of reasons. First Alan Tudyk has other projects, mainly a Broadway production they would have to fight for production time with.

I'd like to add to what others have mentioned that the comics may be hard to find by this point--but there's collection of them all (a trade paperback it's called) due out early next year (Jan or Feb). It's already up on Amazon for preorders, I think. Its got a beautiful cover.

Something I noticed:
When Inara and Mal are talking, she makes sure to add that he'll be paid for coming to help. First thing I though of was their "strictly business relationship" from Heart of Gold.

I've got a question though... When the operative is looking at Mal's profile, does it say he was a Captain in the war? I though Badger called him Sargent in (I think it was) Serenity?

After the "Serenity" credit, the movie starts and ends with Mals cry of "what was that?"

"This mummy hand has ceased to exist! It is an ex-mummy hand!"

The dress Inara is wearing in her last scene with Mal, when he tells her that they will bring her back to civilisation now and she replies 'I don't know' - Am I imagining things or is that one of River's dresses - not from the movie but from the series?! It doesn't look like it's one of Inara's dresses at all (length, style, etc), and I'm pretty sure I've seen it before...

That Inara is wearing something of either River's or Kaylee's makes sense, since she doesn't have a lot of clothes on Serenity (apart from the mysterious forgotten box Mal mentions in the wave), but I'm just not sure where I've seen that dress before. Any ideas?

Forgive me on this one, but I married an English professor, and it's rubbing off:

Mal told Inara she would see a new side of him if he went to war. She did.

At the end, I was uncomfortable with the exchange between Mal & Inara the first couple of times I saw it. I liked that she'd taken her makeup mask off, and was wearing something different from usual (hadn't thought of it being Kaylee's or River's) but I didn't understand why she was grinning and acting like a schoolgirl with a crush. An un"skilled" schoolgirl, even. Inara doesn't act like that, right?

But maybe Inara does. Maybe Inara took her whole mask of companion training off, and we got to see a glimpse of the real deep down sweet vulnerable Inara, before whatever horrible thing happened that made her have to protect herself from any real kind of love.

When I thought that, I just wanted to hug her. Wish these people existed. Guess most of us do, eh?

YAY Joss!

Inara and Mal both throw each other off. Their training (him as a hard captain and fighter, her as a companion) goes right out the window when they are together. Love does that.

I gotta agree with LONGWAYOFDRUMS on this one, it's a slightly sci-fi modded AR-18/180.

I believe that in an interview or article Joss said that Simon liet to everyone in the first episode about how he got River out because he wasn't sure if he could trust them all. Joss said that what happened in the movie was the way it really happened.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's right.

Yer right on the Reaver fight gun...I saw the BDM now for the 6th time and really payed attention to the gun and I smacked my own forehead for not realizing it sooner.

I don't think anybody mentioned one of the first few scenes. Mal draws out his gun to the camera which the camera work oddly looks like one of Firefly's eps. (This is just before/after River joins the crew in the cargobay questioning Mal's part)

Explaination from the series. Mal draws out his gun, Inara comes in and scares him. He makes a squeal and tries to play it off as something you say when you draw out your gun. Camera is then a closeup s hot of Mal drawing out his gun saying "hoo ha"

Everytime I see this part in the film, I keep thinking, "hoo haa" drives me bonkers it does.

About Wash on Miranda - was he supposed to say something else, or did he just mess up his line? Because the camera stops on him, and then it switches to another shot, and he says his "let's find the beacon" line. If you watch it again, you'll see what I mean. It seems like something was changed there.

Remarkably minor, I know; I was just curious if something was removed from the script.

I noticed the connection between Jayne's line (about all the people being dead for no reason) and Wash my fifth viewing - the camera is acually on Wash when Jayne says it!

That ever so important engine part also showed up in the junk yard on Ariel where Wash was playing with it then threw it away. It hit the helicopter thingy... Check it out it's kind of funny since Kaylee didn't seem to notice and was scrounging around for spare parts. I can't remember if Ariel was before Out of Gas or not.. if so then oooo foreshadowing or some such dramatical thingy.

Did anyone realize what Zoe said to Wash at the end of "Heart of Gold?" How she was looking forward to having his babies? It just makes your heart hurt.

I figured that was why the way Simone really got River out was as in the movie due to him not trusting the crew yet.

As for the tossing of the part.. it just reminds me what Mal said in Out of Gas... It's not important until you don't have one.

That's all I can think of right now.

Technically, Simon didn't get River "out". He got her into an airshaft. It was the people he funded (the underground movement) who came in a ship, lowered the platform, and got them out.

the profile the operative was looking at definitely said he was a captain in the independent army. tsk tsk!

Everytime I watch our BDM I can't help but wonder where that necklace of Jayne's came from. He doesn't wear it in the movie and for some reason it strikes me as a not entirely Jayne thing.

I noticed Mal flipping the three switches ( I loved that!) and also Zoe's gun is the same.

I never noticed Vera, I'll try to watch for it, if I get to see it this Thursday. I hope, I hope!

It ain't a cataylzer. Least ways, not the same type of catalyzer goes in Serenity's engine. Just got through the series again, and I payed particular attention to the look of the catalyzer--it isn't the same as the thing Kaylee is holding in the BDM. I also checked the script--not even mentioned that she's holding anything, so it wasn't intentional (as far as the writing goes). It ain't no catalyzer. Just something looks like one. I'd like to see side-by-side comparisons (cause I know there are certain people on this board with the BDM already), just to clear this up.

This question's popped up before; I've got a theory, based on the same data profile listing Mal having received a Medal of Valor for the Battle of Serenity.

We have to ask, if the Battle of Serenity Valley was the last of the war, then when was that medal issued?

My guess is that it was during the two weeks of negotiation that followed the Alliance victory.

Chances are, the major part of that negotiation was on the issue of amnesty for former Browncoats -- (C/R the American Civil War amnesty)-- and that as a sop to Independent pride the Browncoat military was allowed to muster its own out with all due honors, including field promotions. And Mal had been acting as an officer in the field for months by that point.

Given that Mal still considers the delay to be a betrayal, there were probably some sweetheart deals cut for the former Independent High Brass. Getting a commission that way was probably the bitterest ashes in his mouth.

Losing the war broke Mal's heart. Being sold out by his own side for some political advantage is what killed his faith.

Inara's appearance at the end struck me too - but it didn't remind me of River or Kaylee, it reminded me of Nandi (from Heart of Gold), especially the dress.

And I love your interpretation of that scene! Maybe that was the first time we saw the 'real' Inara...

THESOMNAMBULIST

Ok most of the things I'd noticed have all been spotted and then some so....

....I have no more, but I did notice :

Select to view spoiler:

At Mr Universe' pad, on one of the screens Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe is playing. The Larry 'Buster' Crab version. There is a shot of 'Ming the Merciless' on his throne.

Anyone else notice that? I only mention it because to me:

Select to view spoiler:

Simon's outfit at the beginning when he rescues River, is very similar in style to the costumes in that show back in the 30's. With the high colars and studded tops

Could just be me but I thought there was a nod to that classic serial of the 30's.

The scene with Inara at the end when she is without her companion makeup - this was the first time i remember seeing her feet. Her dress is just short enough that her 'bare' feet are in shot.
In all of the series her dresses always came to the floor and were very elegant. At the end of the bdm when talking to Mal she looked just like a schoolgirl, hair out, fresh face and feet without shoes.
Will have to wait until the dvd to check this out again.

Burn teh spam boil the tea, Serenity was good for me!
