Shiny! Thanks for the update! I'm looking forward to the book, so much so that I almost went after a signed copy on ebay.

Then it hit $100. I don't have that much to spend. :)

I'm finding the lack of clear answers a little disturbing. The book will arrive soon. The site will be up soon. Yada yada. Doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that the right group has the license for this RPG. I can easily see the sourcebook hitting, MAYBE getting the game screen and then never seeing an adventure released.

BigRedButton, seeing an adventure released kinda depends on how well the movie does. Says so right there. You can't blame them for that. If the movie tanks, why would they throw money into an adventure that wouldn't sell enough to make a profit?

IIRC the RPG industry is in a bit of a slump and there's plenty of uncertainty to go around. It's really better to just say it's in the works then to give a date you almost certainly can't make and deal with the resulting bitching from fans. Of course, announcing when a product is in a new phase (editing, layout, etc.) would be nice.

But if the movie DOESN'T tank, and it takes them 18 months to release a single adventure they'll have squandered the lightning in a bottle and the fickle market will have moved on to something else.

The fact that we're 15 days from the movie release and the site for the RPG isn't even up with a pretty image and a 'coming soon' banner is pretty disturbing.

Small company, busy time with two conventions, personal issues... they all add up. They have three products (book, screen, adventure) already lined up and kinda ready. Patience.

It's really not impatience that drives me. If we were at least getting good information and something resembling a release date I'd have something to work with. As a retailer, I have to deal with people asking me "When's the Serenity RPG coming out?" and my only answer is "I don't know, the website isn't even up yet".

If the book isn't out when the movie hits, we won't be able to capitalize on the popularity of the movie to push the book and if we are stuck with a bunch of sourcebooks on our shelves when it's time to order screens and adventures we'll pass. Why throw good money after bad?

As someone who looks forward to PLAYING the game, my concern is that we're dealing with an "Ernest Makes an RPG" scenario and it's doomed from the start.

Actually, a shiny placeholder image for the website has been created, and has been ready for a while.

What you're not taking into account is that a licensee has a lot of channels and levels of approvals to go through when dealing with a large corporation like Universal Studios. Delays often result because several people are needed to review and sign-off on everything that is created by the licensee. Everything... even a lil' ol' website placeholder image.

At the present time, one of the reasons for the stalled website is due to awaiting certain approvals, and other answers, from Universal. All it takes is a couple of key people, or just one person, being gone (or not returning calls) to produce a delay.

It's not a straight forward process, and a licensee is not his own master. But be assured that Jamie and his crew are working diligently to get the website up and running as soon as they possibly can. Exact finish dates are impossible to give because other people, not them, are a huge factor in this time table.

It's comin'... it really, really is...

From a product confidence and sales point of view, it may not be the best tactic to word your responses quite that way. You may be irritated by the delay, but passing along that irritation to your customers just creates negativity and confusion.

The books are getting ready to be shipped, I believe, within the next two weeks. As to the website, instead of saying, "I don't know, the website isn't even up yet." How about saying something like, "The website will be up soon. But in the meantime, there's an info page for the Serenity RPG at margaretweis.com."

The book is in the process of being shipped. Try not to go to "worst case scenario land", it's a very unhappy place! Also, Serenity has a very loyal following, and is a movie that will most probably have "legs". I sincerely doubt it will be a one weekend movie, then disappear. Serenity merchandise has been, is, and will continue to be in high demand. Part of that reason being that Joss did not allow very many licensed products. This gives more exclusivity and value.

Whoa... that's dark dude! Try not to let the doom and gloom scenarios play out their little performances until the play comes to its inevitable, nihilistic end... and makes the conclusion of Hamlet look like a frothy, uproarious romp...

I understand that no one likes uncertainties. It's also hard when you have customers asking you questions that you can't give definite answers to. But stay positive and this will help keep the spirits up for your customers too. I mean, whether being dark, or being light, either attitude won't directly change the outcome of when the books arrive or the website is up. But... Attitude is a choice, something that you can decide. By being a bit lighter and positive, you'll be feeling a lot better until the time that the books and website happen. And that will be a lot better than the doom and gloom scenario feeling. Unless, of course, you're into that kind of thing!

Keeping a sense of humor and being positive gives confidence to your customers, and keeps good feelings about Serenity. And we all want good things for Serenity right?

How about an answer like "The demand for the game is very high. Copies were released at Gen Con, but they sold out in two days! I hope to have copies for the store soon. Would you like to pre-order one? That way I can make sure I have one for you." :)

Look at this as an opportunity to increase excitement instead of throwing a damp towel on it.

As far as not giving the license to the right company look at what Decipher did with the 'Trek and Lord of the Rings movies. Their LotR RPG was finally released nearly a year after the movie and was riddled with editing problems as well as some serious (IMO) game mechanics problems.

Thankfully Serenity is NOT being done by Decipher.

heh... heh...

Actually, the Art Companion was gettin' all PO'd... the lengthy reply was an overcompensational effort to remain diplomatic.

Got all wordy and stuff. What I really wanted to say only woulda taken two words...

Also, the long explanation was mostly for others who might be wondering what's going... but who don't turn into Capt. Negative and diss the licensees.

But you're mighty shiny for stepping up to defend me. Although, doing things like that might get you punched, or stabbed with a sword someday...

Hey Vern! Today I created an RPG...

As a bona fide southern boy, being mentioned in the same sentence as Ernest P. Worrell does my heart proud. Here's the deal, though. We've got people who know what they're doing, and I'd like to think that one of them is me. Though we have limited resources and manpower, good things are happening.

The book is off to distribution as we speak, which it will be on store shelves next week.

The website will go early next week.

We have exciting plans and announcements.

As for the quality of the Serenity RPG, there are enough people who own the product to speak on that. I am aware of problems with the second printing (which are not there are on the first printing or the special edition) in which text flows off a page. Fortunately it is nothing essentially, and we will have the missing text up in official errata soon. "Insane crew," indeed!

Thanks to all with the kind words. This is a helluva movie coming up, and I'm excited to go see it. I'd like to think that our game is worthy of it.

Jamie I sent you guys a bit of mail but have not heard back yet.

It was about a game question and a couple of ideas.

Here we go here.

What would be the rules if any for a person using a weapon in both hands if that person has the Two Fisted asset.

And the Idea

A ship based Asset (Smuggler's Hold) Minor/Major

Allows for a person to have hidden hold that requires deliberate searching.

Mr Chambers and the posters upon this thread,

I own the Serenity RPG... I got the 8th book sold at Gencon and picked up one of the soctcovers on the last day.

People, rest assured that Mr. Chambers has put out a quality product. I have run two sessions of it... mostly as demos, for my gaming group and they are absolutely thrilled with it. The book is really well done. I have a few minor criticisms

(*whisper, whisper to Mr Chamber's ear!* notabley the lack of an index, which could be remedied with a downloadeable index from the website once it appears!!!)

but the system is great, fast, intuitive and FUN. Mind you, I am a 37 year old gamemaster that has been playing RPG's for over 20 years. I have extended campaigns that I have run for years in the Forgotten Realms D&D setting and I have run a regualar bi-monthly Shadowrun game now for most of a decade. I know games.. this is a good one and a keeper.

Mr. Chambers and his crew have managed to capture the feeling of the series (still unspoiled for hte movie!) very well. While my gaming group all know and love Firefly, I really believe the game would be appealing to many gamers unfamiliar with the 'Verse.

Please don't attack Mr Chambers or MW's company for having a shoddy product when you have yet to see it. I agree they really, really need to get the official website up and it sounds like shipping could be improved... but the game itself is good.

I am looking forward to all the extra stuff coming.. especially a game screen (though I have made my own at this point) and maybe some open ended adventures not dependant upon playing hte original Serenity crew. But the book provides everything you need to play now. It is really well done.

I understand the character sheets are definitely gonna be on the site... Mr. Chambers has said so himself several times now in assorted places.

I would love a few more deckplans too, and of course..well, anytime there's free official downloadables for a game, it'sa grand and glorious thing.

I REALLY would like to see an index for the book available as a download... or maybe include it with the Gamescreen as a few "loose" pages. Or both! Just suggestions to Jamie, as he seems to be reading this forum a lot.

I've run into a few questions while demoing hte game with my group, but I don't have them with me right now. I would like to see a slightly better explanation of how the ranges for weapons work.. but, as others get hte game, the website goes up and so forth, I am sure I will be able to answer all those questions. Besides, it is a new system and I am still learning it as I go... so perhaps I haven't managed to "read" the answers yet.

Something else that all of us supporters of the game should be doing, is creating a "true" independant gamers forum for the game. FFF.net is a great message board but it is so huge, so many things get lost in the shuffle.

I run a several year old website/message board that covers Mr Whedon's endeavers, called the Soulful Spike Society ( www.soulfulspike.com) and I am considering starting a new forum, with webspace available to host "original" content for the gaming system. That's what keeps these smaller games alive and running. A company can only release so much... especially with the state that RPG's are in nowadays. Fan support is important and vital to success. Of course, all us Browncoats understand THAT, right?

Let me know what you guys think here on this forum. If there is interest (not jsut in reading such, but in contributing) post! I can also be contacted at: webmaster@soulfulspike.com . If I get enough interest I will expend some time in developing and hosting such. Things such as player created character sheets, home-brew rules, player designed new ships, worlds and adventure ideas and scenarios could all be housed there with associated threads for discussion of hte same. We have the space and I am interested in doing it.

From what I understand, the lack of an index in the book was purely a matter of space. The book had an absolute 224 page limit. Jamie chose to sacrifice Index page space in order to have as many game info pages as possible. He felt that, for the most part, the Contents section would be sufficient enough of a guide for people to find the information they needed.

So, as you pointed out, a downloadable index can be provided for anyone who would like one. A good work around when having to stay within a strict page count limit.

Aaaaah... more good news. The book was visually designed to provide a rich environment for gamers, and be appealing to non-gamer fans of Firefly/Serenity. It's an extra bonus when gamers unfamiliar with our 'Verse would be interested in the RPG. Seems like a pretty good range of coverage!

Yep, the shipping and website timetables are running a bit behind, but this is being addressed. Thanks for pointing out that the game itself is good. Very soon the site will be up, books will be stocked on shelves, and the subject of the delays will fade into the past.

But the game itself, that's the more important part. That's what is going to be continuing, and what will be staying in peoples' minds. I'd rather have a great product to offer, with a somewaht delayed website appearance and shipment; than a not-so-great product that had a website up right away and got shipped early.

TENTHCREWMEMBER

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Just want to say a few pieces:

1) Really looking forward to the RPG!

2) How is it some people can be in business being so negative astounds me. Coming soon is a crappy answer? Please, it gets people to come back, and that is the point of being in business, to get people coming back. Use that as an opportunity to presell or even sell other stuff! (such as the aforememntioned poker chips for use in gameplay!)

3) Can't wait to play this game!

4) Back in prehistoric times (when I began gaming 30 years ago), there weren't websites *gasp!* and no mass marketing. How anyone can equate a website (not) being up to selling a book is beyond my capacity for rational thinking, apparently.

5) An RPG in my very favorite setting, what could be more shiny?

6) Thank you to all the people who worked/are working so hard on the game and its release...some of actually appreciate it out here in the 'Verse.

7) Did I mention how much I am anticipating the great shiny Serenity RPG?

Howdy all!

I'm pleased as punch to tell you that the Serenity Role Playing Game is now available to buy, autographed by myself and Margaret Weis, directly from MWP (that's us). We always suggest you support your local game store if you have one nearby. Supporting the hobby community by buying from your local retailer helps keep the industry alive.

That said, if you're interested in buying from us, we usually ship within 1-2 business days and can personalize signatures on request.

Go to the "Other Words" category and select "Serenity." We'll have the Limited Edition available for sale soon as well.

Thanks all!

** Jamie

I just followed the link with no problem; maybe it was a momentary glitch.

I don't know what your problem is, but I bet it's hard to pronounce.

Thanks, Jamie! Are these already shipping to retailers? I want to support my local game store, but I have only so much patience... ;)

As a side question to the creator/people who have the game, what dice are required? I'd like to go pick them up before my book comes in. Not neccesarily sure that I'll play, but it'd be nice anyway.

A U.S.-based retailer that had an order in should have it by mid-week, as best I can tell. Please post your game store "sightings" when you see the book on a shelf!

They're not shipping this week from Diamond, so unless your local shop ordered from some other source (and most likely they didn't) don't check there this week.
