...at 11:30pm, my phone rang. It was my 12-year-old son, Cameron. That means it was 12:30am for him in South Carolina. He had to repeat himself twice for me to understand him. Jenna, his (half) sister, 17, was in a car accident tonight, and is gone. The beautiful high-school junior, who also was the beautiful little 3-year-old girl I held in my lap and watched cartoons with all those years ago, is gone.

I'm leaving in the morning for the 11 hour drive, and I'm using up the vacation days from work that I was saving for the NC BDM Premiere Party. Priorities, friends.

If you believe in God, I ask that you pray for my son Cameron, and for his mother Deanna. If you don't believe, just send some positive/healing energy towards Newberry, South Carolina. I'll round it up and deliver it in person.

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Please accept my sympathy and my prayers.
This is a terrible tragedy and you know your friends here on the board will always be here to support your spirits in any way possible.

I cannot believe your work place doesn't have bereavement leave for immediate family members, did you even tell them the reason for your immediate departure?

Take care.

I'm entirely new here, but your post was highlighted.

My deep sympathies for you, for your son, and for their mom. There's never a good time to deal with it.

Be together while you need to, so you can heal some. It takes time, but it does heal.

Here's hoping you'll find strength together.

I'm a therapist in a local mental health program with almost thirty years experience helping kids. I am also an original appointee to West Virginia's first Child Fatality Review Team; and the primary author of the state's first child maltreatment death report, "Daniel's Death," which focused on systemic deficiencies within the child protection system. It was widely distribed by the West Virginia Supreme Court, where I worked at the time, and extensively covered by the press. I also founded and directed the state's first Child Abuse and Neglect Data Base...was the lead investigator that resulted in several landmark children's right decisions.... That's enough about my background -- I writing for a related but very different reason. I want to share some power to help with your grief -- to tell you a story. Professionally, I absorb emotional pain to empower victims into actions that heal.

This story is about the only time I ever heard my grandma cuss. My grandma was the most religious person I'd ever met. She went to church every time the doors were open. Grandma never cut her hair because it was a sin for a woman. We couldn't talk about school dances because they were of the devil.

'm the oldest of four children from an impoverished background. One day, we were at my grandma's house and my little sister ran in bawling. Some mean boy had made fun of her because of the Goodwill clothes she was wearing. Well, as the big brother, it was my job to go beat him up. I stomped out the front door and there was my grandma standing on the front porch holding onto the rail. She looked down at me and said, "Bobby, don't let the assholes get you down." I went back inside and strengthened my little sister.

That incident was over forty years ago, but I still use Grandma when I need a little extra power to deal with a situation. She's got the biggest heart ever to beat, and if you need her to deal with your loss, all you have to do is to think about this story. I guarantee she won't let you down.

BTW, I have a son named Cameron too.

"Rarity from the Hollow," my first novel, will
come out as an ebook later this summer. Please see: www.fatcatpress.com It is filled with empowerment strategy. If you think it would help, let me know and I'll email the ms.

Lacy Dawn, the protagonist, is a preadolescent victim of child abuse from an impoverished Appalachian hollow who overcomes by empowering others and ends up saving the universe. She is a composite character based on children I met where I now work, mostly victims. The realism is harsh and intended to impact the social problem of child maltreatment.

On the other hand, the fantasy is outrageous and fun -- it reinforces content by contrast. I believe that fiction has a great potential to educate, sometimes beyond nonfiction because readers bond with characters and react emotionally, as well as, intellectually during the process.

A percentage of any profits has been designated to go to Children's Home Society to prevent child abuse.

Here's a quote from Faith, Lacy Dawn's best friend and a sexual abuse victim who was murdered in the second chapter:

"It's a kid's job to help her parents and any kid who don't ain't much of a kid and maybe don't even deserve to live."

Take care.

I am so very, very sorry for your loss and the pain it must cause you, your son, and all of your extended family. I will be praying for all of you. I too have a daughter who is a junior in high school, and I cannot imagine what Jenna's parents are going through. I will be praying especially hard for her mother, to find the strength to get through this. God bless you and give you the wisdom and strength you will need to help your son through this.

And to everyone - I received a call a few hours ago that a 15 year old boy my daughter goes to high school with was killed, along with a 16 and 17 year old friend, in a car accident last night. They were hit at a stop light by a 20 year old drunk driver, the only one to walk away from the accident. PLEASE, PLEASE, everyone take care on the road, be careful of what you do, teach your children, and never, never get behind the wheel after drinking.

Twice in as many years we've gotten the dreaded late-night phone call and learned of the loss of a close family member; both times were in auto accidents. It's never going to seem fair, it's never going to make sense. In time the pain fades somewhat, but right now it's real, and now, and it's legitimate. Grieve, rage, do whatever is needful to get through the immediacy of it--and rely on the rest of your family and close friends for comfort and strength. Let yourself feel it, and work through it, so you can get into the road to what healing is possible.

All the best wishes and good energy I (and my family) can send is yours.

I can see you.

Words cannot express how we feel but I want you to know I am so terribly, terribly sorry for your loss. I grieve for you and with you as I have been in your place and cried out to God and begged him to take me instead of my loved one.

Just keep telling yourself how happy Jenna is now and who she is with. Imagine her looking down on you and smiling and her wishing you and your son and his mother were not hurting so. She loves you and will always be with you, in your heart, and you will see her again.
