Who knows? As of "Objects in Space" Jayne had, at best, a grudging respect for River. The movies will have to show us how their relationship has been or could be developed.

That would be interesting! Let's see, she's slashed him and he's tried to turn her over to the Alliance. I'm not sure that's a foundation for a lasting relationship.

I hope I'm not hijacking your thread, but it did raise a question with me. With the exception of River telling Jayne "And remember, I can kill you with my brain" is there any other time where they directly address each other?

Well that's all kinds of unsettling.

I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it.

Spooky! Not too long ago I had an email from someone wanting to affiliate with my site. Now, they have some wonderful fanart but I was a little surprised at how much featured River & Jayne.

See for yourselves:

I've read quite a bit of fanfic, and I'm surprised at how much is R/J. I'm not trying to be disagreeable, but I just don't see it. Ofcourse, I may be blinded by my J/K fandom.

There was the one scene where River teases with "Jayne is a girl's name".

But other than that, not a lot verbally, as such, but there are plenty of non verbal scenes where they interact quite pleasantly with one another. Such as when she steals his bread roll at the table.

I didn't see the whole "I can kill you with my brain" scene as a serious threat. She was just backing Simon up and teasing him, really, because she knows how uncomfortable he is around her.

River doesn't actually address Zoe or Wash much either. With the exception of that scene in 'Bushwhacked' I can't really recall much Zoe/River interaction at all... but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a good relationship with them.

I don't think River and Jayne dislike each other so much, they just have a healthy distrust of each other. And I see it as a sibling thing, you know... they can fight and squabble all they like between each other, but the minute an outsider attacks either one... WATCH OUT.

If Badger or his men had tried to do anything to River in 'Shindig', I can't exactly see Jayne sitting back and shrugging.

pant, pant, pant,
a few minutes more at least,
rant, rant, rant,
my churning belly of a beast.

take heed my anxious, fellow A-level browncoats,
and settle that stomach of yours with some fine Scots Porridge Oats,
hear the imagined, wise words of one Jewel Staite,
"you are all the masters of your own fate".

let not exam results squeeze your cranium through a funnel,
'cause there is always at least some light at the end of the tunnel,
and I have heard the majestic space monkey's call,
for a life spent worrying, waiting, is no life at all!

DESKTOPHIPPIE

Has anyone here ever watched Babylon 5? There were two alien characters in the show, Londo Molari and G'Kar. They started off as sworn enemies, but gradually became friends (of a sort) as the series progressed. Aside from anything Mutant Enemy, it's the only show I've seen that was careful to develop it's characters in a believable way over time.

I can see Jayne and River respecting each other and maybe liking each other a little, but they're just so different! River's a genius and Jayne is ... well ... he's Jayne. He's blunt, he's practical, he loves weapons and fighting and money. River isn't concerned with any of those things. Sure, she's been made into some kind of freaky psychic Alliance assasin type person, but she takes no pleasure in it. She doesn't even see a gun as a gun. "It's just an object. It doesn't mean what you think."

I can't see River and Jayne becoming close, but I think a kind of friendship is possible. Actually, I'd love to see more River/Jayne conversations. Especially now that he knows she can hear what he's thinking!

There's a long history of shows where hostility turns to love--

Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn in Woman of the Year

Jumping forward decades--

Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepard in Moonlighting

Shelley Long and Ted Danson in Cheers

etc, etc.

Of course, Simon would oppose it for oh, so many reasons. It would have been fun to watch, expecially since there's a little "crackle" between Kaylee and Jayne.

My personal feeling is that Jayne/Kaylee is a big brother/little sister thing, although that doesn't mean they couldn't fall into a bunk once or twice before deciding it wouldn't work long term.

Sadly, I guess we'll never know.

Of course, there's John Chrichton and Aeyrn Sun. Farscape had (IMO) the best non-Whedon long-term character development ever.

Something tells me there's always going to be tension (not of the sexual variety, cause, ew.) between J/R. Jayne's always gonna look out for Jayne, and others are kind of a secondary concern.
