I think we'll do 80 mil globally. 'Cause I think were gonna do 40 mil domestically in the first two weeks. 20 on opening weekend and 20 over the remaining 11 days. Just so long as we all commit to seeing it at least twice.

Here is a quote from the EW article--

"I was a Whedon stalker,"laughs Mary Parent,Universal's now-out going vice chairman of production, who dug Whedon's vision and no-surrender passion. She also reconized a potentially marketable Cinderella story."I thought this band of underdogs could make for a cool movie." shiny!

here is another quote--is a quote from the EW article--

Universal execs say the film would need to gross north of 80 mil to garner sequel consideration(sorry didn't read that part before)--not an impossible dream, given that Whedon also bosts a strong following abroard("Trilogy!" cries Fillion)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I'll have to look for the EW so I can read the article.

We kind of knew we would have to have an 80 million plus figure in order to get a sequel. Adam said as much at Dragon Con last year.

We need to keep up our efforts to bring in new people, go see the BDM as many times as we can afford in the the crucial opening weekend & following two weeks, and get friends and family to go as well.

I'm committed to twice. Maybe more if funds permit. 80 mil seems very attainable. We just can't get comfortable with the idea that it is attainable and slack off. Which I'm sure we won't.

I don't know the exact numbers for the screenings, but if you just do the math, you can get a ballpark.

There were 12 screenings. Then they expanded to 22, then 33. So, basically, 67 showings. The theatre I saw it in seated 185, but for argument's sake, let's say the average was 200. 67 screenings with 200 people is 13,400 people. If they each paid $10 per ticket, then the screenings earned $134,000.

If that $.1 million actually makes a difference on opening weekend, then it means that the movie didn't do well.

80 mil is 12,307,692 tickets at $6.50 (figuring discount tickets as the average means that people in expensive towns and big sales just make it go higher!)

If we do tickets at $7.50: 10,666,667

There are currently just north of 47000 Browncoats on the U site (I don't know the count here, sorry!). If only U registered Browncoats went, they'd each have to buy 227 tickets.

Good thing we know that we're all bringing friends!

It seems that anything opens in the 20s-30s these days. I mean, look at Dukes of Hazzard! It had a good opening. If that drek can open like that, then hopefully something with some actual merit, like Serenity, can do better?
Then again...as a friend of mine is fond of saying: "The masses...are asses."

And Uni wants to see an $80 mill, what, opening weekend?

The more I think about this...80's do-able. I'm already organizing a group of about...let's see...at least ten folks to go see it at least once. Count in my parents and brother, that's 13...anyone from work (I know I've some closet Browncoats at the high school) and we're easily pushing 15! And that's just seeing it once. Edit: And that doesn't even count any students or their parents who I've turned onto the Firefly thing!

WRIGLEYVILLER

I assume this $80 million includes home video receipts.

From Slate:

Quote:

Each of the major studios, however, supplies the real numbers to its trade association, the MPAA, including a detailed breakdown of the money they actually receive, country by country, from movie theaters, home video, network television, local television, pay television, and pay-per-view, which is then privately circulated among the six studios as "All Media Revenue Report." (To see these private data click here.)

These numbers tell the story. Ticket sales from theaters provided 100 percent of the studios' revenues in 1948; in 2003, they accounted for less than 20 percent. Instead, home entertainment provided 82 percent of the 2003 revenues. In terms of profits, the studios can make an even larger proportion from home entertainment since most, if not all, of the theatrical revenues go to pay for the prints and advertising required to get audiences into theaters. (Video, DVDs, and TV have much lower marketing costs.)

This profit reality has transformed the way Hollywood operates. Theatrical releases now essentially serve as launching platforms for videos, DVDs, network TV, pay TV, games, and a host of other products. Even so, the box-office totals are losing their traditional influence. Up until a few years ago, the results from the U.S. box office largely drove secondary markets, especially video. If a film had a huge opening, the video chains would order 200,000 or more copies (at $60 or more apiece wholesale) for rentals. But this buying formula ended when consumers began buying DVDs at mass retailers. By 2004, Wal-Mart was accounting for more than one-third of the studios' revenues in video and DVD.

If it does include home video, I am highly confident that Serenity will meet this threshold. It may even do it in its theatrical release alone.

Usually a statement like this one from EW means they're referring to domestic and foreign first run box office. So my interpretation is this means SERENITY has however long its first run is for its domestic and foreign box office combined to hit 80 mil.

That means it doesn't have to do it opening weekend or in two weeks. If its opening weekend isn't a bomb it'll run two weeks like all movies do. If it pulls strong enough numbers (and it doesn't have to be blockbuster strong--just solid and consistent) it will continue to run a few more weeks and possibly longer.

So I don't think the 80 mil mark means just opening weekend nor includes home video rentals. But since I haven't read the article, or know the source of the statement, or work in the industry, it's just possible I don't know what I'm talking about.

Usually reports (like the ones you hear on Entertainment Tonight or read in the "Weekend Box Office" sidebar in the entertainment section of your newspaper) about how much a movie made refer to domestic gross only. But since this article specifically mentioned globally, obviously we have to hit 80 mil worldwide. Which I think is very do-able.

The reason why it seems like so many movies bomb is because most of the time all that's reported is domestic gross. But since we all know the majority of the money is made through rentals and sales (plus foreign gross) almost every movie makes money. Like 90+ percent. As the article from Slate implied, the theatrical release of a movie is basically a loss-leader advertisement for the DVD.

And if you think about superhero movies this gets more interesting. Most (if not all) Marvel and DC comics don't make a profit. But Marvel and Warner Brothers have a vested interest in keeping those characters alive--especially in the cases of the characters who are part of the cultural fabric, so they'll be viable movie properties. So the comic books act as loss- leader advertisement for theatrical movies which in turn act as loss-leader advertisment for DVD's.

Weird, huh?

Studios usually cook the books to make it look like their movies lose money. That way they don't have to pay those who are owed a percentage of the net profit.

So if you ever make a movie deal never ever agree to a percentage of the net. One time Eddie Murphy refered to net points as "monkey points" 'cause he knew net points meant nothing.

Managed a conversion of most of my best mates this weekend. They all came down to Leeds for a night out. The hung over morning after one asked to see an episode of "this Sci-Fi series you've been banging on about". Eight straight episodes later we only stopped because it was time for them to go home. I am sure the UK will make a significant contribution to that $80 mill worldwide.
