I just turned another citizen into a FF fan, my brother in law, and he asked "Why does Serenity look like a horse?" And I remember having that go through my head months ago, but hadn't really thought of it since.
Is it intentional? I guess it must be. But it's only at certain angles.
I don't care, the ship looks cool no matter what inspired it's design.

I've always thought so. Joss says it was designed to look like a bug, but the neck and head say horse to me. Especially when Jayne is jumping off it onto a train just like in all the old westerns. This even led to my screen name.

DREAMINGBEGGAR

I remember watching one scene in particular (possibly in the pilot?) where Serenity was in the process of landing and thinking the same thing. The elongated bow really screams horse from the side. And the there is the scene right before Mal kills Dobbs when he Jayne and Zoe ride into the cargo bay. The only part of Serenity that is visible is the cockpit and the neck-like structure. The juxtaposition between the ship and the horses that the BDM are riding is remarkable.

And I agree, Serenity is an extremely beautiful piece of engineering. Like a pegasus.
With turbines on the side and a fusion drive crammed in the hind quarters. And an angry guy with a really big gun hanging out of... nevermind.

(Edited for craptastic spelling.)

It's supposed to look like a firefly which is bug that they don't have where I live.

I think it could look like a horse, but it really does look like a firefly too. It definitely has bug like qualities. :)

Hmm, I never noticed that before, but you're right, it does look like a horse! Or a pegasus.

I guess it's just me, but I see a cross between a bug and a duck (or maybe a swan...)

JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

A horse? That is *so* not what I thought you were going to say.

Because I thought Serenity looked like a horse, I wanted a horsey sort of name when I joined this and other boards. Hasufel is a geeky horse name, being the horse that is given to Aragorn in the Two Towers when he, Legolas, and Gimli meet the Riders of Rohan. (Should I have left spoiler space?)

Slight tangent: "Hasufel" is grey coat in the Old English that the language of Rohan is based on.

I've always been partial to your chosen name because of the Tolkien reference. /end tangent

Back to the subject, I've never thought Serenity looked like a horse, but I'm not going to argue with those who do. It's like arguing over what a cloud looks like. We see what we see.

I said horse to me when I first saw it...
Its rear end is kind of FireFly like... according to the DVD's (i think) the front end was supposed to be Bird-like.

Am embarrassed that I knew that without having to ask. Legolas’ horse being, of course, Arod ….

Okay, now you got me thinking about having some kind of Serenity centerpiece at Thanksgiving... :D

Oh dear, that kind of makes the cargo doors the... you know what... where the stuffing goes.

Ack, get that image out of my head!

No, you're definitely not the only one. Especially on some of the movie posters, where the ship seems to have a few more rounded edges than it actually does, and at an unfortunate angle...
When the first mini-poster came out there was a big ruckus over this.

It's so good to know I'm not the only pervert watching FF ... but I guess we should all take heed of Dr Freud and remember that sometimes a Firefly-class spaceship is just a firefly-class spaceship …

(or a goose?? – long neck, body of a chicken … would it be better to say swan? Far more glamourous)

N.B. Presumably parapraxis (also known as the Freudian slip) in space would be sparapraxis …
