I think this is absolutely great! The fact that Sci-Fi has launched a Firefly specific thread almost 5 years after the fact is HUGE!

I don't know, it seems that our shiny heroes have been in the spotlight this week - Special Edition DVD, website ... Could this be the start of something bigger?

Thanks to Sci-Fi!

I realize that the phrase has become part of the Series mythology, but I for one believe that the name has nothing to do with the Overlanders. Why would a Unit that has female soldiers such as Zoe go by such a sexist nickname? It doesn't really make sense. It's much more likely that Badger was being a SmartAss. Using that phrase fits his character more than anyone else's.

I agree that Badger was being sarcastic when he mentions that name. It's the only explanation that fits the context in which the comment was made. At least to me. On the other hand, in the Serenity Visual Companion,Joss makes reference to the 57th Overlanders twice in A Brief History of the Universe circa 2507A.D.(pg14 of TOVC)

Ah, I stand corrected. In a deleted scene from the BDM,the one where The Operative is tracking Mal, on one of the screens that they pull up with info on Mal, are the words "Balls and Bayonets Brigade". This changes how I understand Badgers remarks somewhat, but not entirely.

Maybe the 57th Overlanders were a regiment or a corps. On another note, somehow I feel that this is all very common knowledge, and that I, being new to all this, am just now figuring some of this out. Especially considering that this thread appears to be a year and a half old.

Personally, I have always interpreted the unit name "Balls and Bayonets Brigade" to mean Mal's outfit was just too stubborn to stop fighting when they were out of ammo and supplies...namely kicking ass with only their cajones and rifle bayonets (aka up close and smellin' Purplebelly halitosis)

And the first time I saw Zoe's last name in anything close to official was Keith R.A. DeCandido's novelization. Which is nominally based off an early shooting script of Serenity, so the last name could have changed later.

Our universe is cool but Joss's verse is cooler.

Of course he's being sarcastic. The whole point of Badger's little monologue is to put Malcolm in his place. Basically, Badger is saying, "You think you're a soldier, a man of honor? Well you're not--you're just a little player in my game." So of course he would mention Mal's rank, his unit, and the fact that he lost the war. All that puts Mal in his place. And calling it the "Balls and Bayonets Brigade" serves a dual purpose: it lets Mal know that Badger knows all about him, and it insults Mal's unit by implying that it didn't live up to its nickname.

Agreed. I just thought that the name he uses for Mals unit was a mockery of what the real name might be. I wouldn't have expected someone like Badger to know the real name. But I was wrong. As I posted above, the name Balls and Bayonets Brigade shows up on an Alliance info screen in one of the deleted scenes in the BDM. I was interpreting that scene all wrong. Thanks to this thread, I'm not anymore. Its all good.

Yes, thanks to SciFi!

They have a growing, thriving Firefly forum over there, very active in guerilla marketing and participating fully in everything that goes on in the 'Verse. It's a really fun place and I always think that maybe SciFi glances now and again at the activity there. Maybe counts heads so to speak... gauges interest in Firefly... are you gettin' my drift?

Anyway.. I figure it's a great thing for all of us to be members over there for two reasons...

1. they see us
2. it's shiny fun over there!

Go join! By the way it's affectionately known as the Skiffy board amongst Browncoats.
