What was the deal with the kids and Rive & Kaylee?

I missed the first few minutes of the last episode (War Stories) - why were there two little kids playing on Serenity? Maybe they weren't kids, but they looked like it. And after River said the "No power in the 'verse can stop me" thing, what was the deal with how Kaylee looked at her? And at the end, when Kaylee looked at River wierdly...?

The 'kids' were River and Kaylee. Jayne had bought a whole crate of apples for the crew. River stole one from Kaylee (like when she stole the biscuit off of Jayne's plate) and Kaylee was chasing her to get it back. Just horseplay. When Kaylee caught up with River and took the apple back, she exclaimed "No power in the 'verse can stop me!" (As in "I win")

I think Kaylee was reacting to the fact that River grabbed her gun and was able to shoot those three men without even looking in their direction. It's not only the last thing you'd expect of River, but her aim had to be something other than blind luck.

Very true. Looks to me like River might well have been in agent-training, meaning to mold her into something similar to the Blues.

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.
