This is just silly. A scalper says they are selling the tickets so they cna buy firefly dvds and donate them to libraries. And since Torontonians aren't allowed to scalp tickets on ebay they decided to sell something else and "give" the tickets away with the item.

It just annoys me. Thats all. Because if this person was a browncoat they'd be trying to get other fans in toronto tickets without exploiting them this way.

Nothing to do with our BDM, but there was a feature on the BBC last night about Live8 tickets being sold on ebay. The organisers are not at all happy as it goes against the spirit of the event ("scum" I believe was the term used) - slightly different scenario of course but will bring the scalping issue to a wider audience and who knows, may even lead to a change in policy.

What I didn't think about, until I saw this last night, is that ebay get a percentage (I don't know the specific details, no doubt someone can elaborate) of all sales so there's not much incentive for them to crack down on grossly overpriced items.

The ridiculous thing about the price of the live 8tickets is the maths of it.

2 million texts were sent requesting tickets.

150 000 tickets were given out.

You could pretty much guarentee yourself a ticket if you sent a significant number of texts at 1.50 for a lot less than some people are charging on ebay for them.

The lengths to which people will go to rationalize their unethical decisions doesn't amaze me anymore.

How are we even to be guaranteed that he is actually going to buy the DVD's for the libraries anyway.

Heck if I could buy a firefly dvd for a library to get tickets. I would. But I would rather see the dvd personally delived rather than have some guy on ebay say hes sending it.

It's not really worth getting mad at the scalpers. They are in it to make money, and they can with the way things are currently set up.

The way to fix it is to sell the tickets using a dutch auction. Give everyone a couple days to enter bids for how many tickets they want, and how much they are willing to pay. Then set the price for each screening location at the highest price that sells all available tickets.

This way everyone who is willing to pay a lot for a ticket will get one, but won't have to pay scalper prices. So there won't be any market for scalpers to make money.

The funny thing about the Live8 tickets on Ebay, I saw yesterday there was a small group of people placing bogus bids on EVERY sale, bidding like $100,000,000. Everytime the Ebay admins would delete the bid, another one popped up.
I guess that's one way to deal with those scalpers. I didn't see any on sale today!

Or better yet, make all tickets bought on-line for these prescreenings available for pick-up ONLY on the day of the event, with credit card in hand. That way there wouldn't be time to ship/send the ticket to the winner of the auction, and (almost) no one would bid if they knew that it would be so much work for the scalper to get the tickets to them.

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.
