Reavers are people. There is no disease or otherwise non-psychological cause.

The exact cause of their behavior is unknown, but my version of other people’s theories follow

Reavers are what happen when you strip away all illusions from a person, without our illusions we loose sight of who and what we are. What happens when you take normal people and stick them in a ship, and don’t let them out. When the food runs low what do they do? When they are running low on air what do they do?

After you’ve eaten your friends and killed your family things like the sanctity of human life probably fade away. If you don’t survive then what you did was for nothing. Anything you can do to forget the pain, you do. Pleasure and survival would be the only course left to you, after all reintegration into society is unlikely, and if you kill yourself you don’t really matter anymore, not when talking about Reavers.

By the way, I figure people do shoot at them but
1) They seem to prey on those that are not up for defending themselves.
2) It’s hard to shoot straight when your hands are shaking from fear.
3) It’s entirely possible that they simply swarm in, those killed by the guns become shields for those behind them.
4) Some people do not stop until they are dead, they could be lacking legs, for instance, from a shotgun or whatnot and still be crawling towards you trying to kill you. Reavers probably can work themselves up into that kind of frenzy.

If you don’t leave survivors, and drag away your own dead, then the legend grows. People find a town of dead and none of the enemy, looks spooky.

VETERAN

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Rumor is that Reavers are men who went mad from living isolated out in the black.

MANWITHPEZ

Important people don't do field work.

Their is an excellent essay about Reavers in Finding Serenity called The Heirs of Sawney Beane. Its great, and points to a possible reference for the Reavers.

As for me, I believe Reavers are human (of course they are) crazed humans who are the very product of the Alliance dropping settlers off on poorly terraformed worlds without the proper means to take care of themselves. They are intelligent. They have to be, to continure piloting spacecraft. But, how could an intelligent person do the things that Reavers are described as doing? Crazy or not. They can not...CAN NOT be a self sustaining society. Since the customarily leave no survivors, you can't look to Bushwhacked for the answer. That is no way to sustain a whole clan of cannibals. Not explaining Reavers go up there with Book and River as far the unexplained points of Firefly that truly, truly needed explaining...

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

I agree, ManwithPez. That's always kind of nagged at me, too. Joss may have to jump through a hoop or two to explain how Reavers can get it together enough to function at a level high enough to be able to fly spaceships.
