I'm whipping up a nasty little story at the moment, and am trying to think of what the Serenity crew would fear the most. I'd like to hear what other fans have to say, but here are my two coppers on the subject...

Malcolm: I think he's scared of losing his crew. Hurt him, he can take it. Hurt a crew member, or someone that is depending on him (or he feels is depending on him), that's going to hurt.

A second-place fear for him would be losing his freedom. Being trapped on some shiny, facist Alliance rock with no way to escape, and watchful eyes always on him.

Zoe: Being in a position of helplessness. I'm thinking she takes great pride in being able to handler herself, no matter where she is.

Wash: Dying alone, I'm thinking. Losing Zoe has got to be up there on the fear factor. Another fear he'd have is being dead in the water - no way to get help, no way to steer out of it - no way out.

Kaylee: I'm not sure about her. Maybe letting people down or not being able to handle her job.

Jayne: I'm not sure what the big guy might be spooked by. Maybe being in the position of having to take care of someone else's hide and not just his own?

Book: I don't know enough about him, but if his past catches up with him, that might be reason to be a little unnerved.

River: The School. The Blue Hands.

Simon: Maybe losing his mind. Losing River, maybe he's scared that he'll get shipped to where River got shipped.

Inara: She's a tough one. There are the possiblities she she is afraid of losing her looks, since they are key to her job. There's also the possibilities brought up by bad clients, but those seem...a little obvious.

If folks have suggestions, pass them along...

Cancellation.

Seriously though, I imagine that Mal, Jayne and Inara all particularly fear (each in their own way) not having any control over their situation. With Jayne it's in the real physical sense, while with Mal it's more in the conceptual "freedom" sense. And Inara chose a profession that gives her enormous control.

Simon obviously fears losing River more than anything, seeing as he gave up everything he had for her.

Book is most afraid of losing his faith.

Kaylee is so easygoing, it would be interesting to find out . . .

Also, Jayne has provided ample evidence that, despite his bravado, he's scared as hell in the presence of Reavers. Perhaps an encounter with Reavers figured prominently in his history...

I personally doubt that jayne has had an encounter with a reaver. I think he's scared of them because of what he's heard, but i doubt he's ever seen one. I don't think he'd still be standing there if he had seen a reaver. At the very least, he'd be crazy like the bushwacked guy.

Just my two cents.

I'm actually of the opinion that Jayne both wants and would be terrified of actual control, of being the leader. The reason he's always been so keen on being the boss, is because he's never been one before. He's never felt the weight, the burden of having to make decisions that might mean the end of everything you care about.

IMO, if you're looking to freak out Jayne, put him in control during something absolutely horrific - and watch as he falls to pieces trying to keep his head above water.

I think Kaylee's most afraid of loss. In OOG, she looked absolutely terrified at the idea of Zoe not surviving and of Serenity being beyond repair. Later (earlier? I'm all messed up with the time frame) in Safe, she's nearly panicking because Book may not survive and Simon and River are still on the planet.

So. That's just me. I think she'd fall apart if something happened that left her the only survivor.
