We all remember Early from Objects in Space: big, shiny gun; red suit; always asking those biazzare questions. Now we have the un-named Operative from the movie: carries a sword; very smart; believes in honorable deaths. Both failed their job: to recapture River.

Which of these two asassins do you like more?

I like Jubal Early because sometimes his questions made sense. He was also funny at times. The Operative was cool with his sword but Early had an old reliable gun.

Who is your favorite asassin/bounty hunter?

Both have their own merrits but I didn`t think the opperative was a bounty hunter but rather someone employed by governments to do their dirty work. Jubal on the other hand, works for himself and doesn`t have Alliance backup (re: Movie)

I see Jubal as a not-quite operative, maybe they both had the same training but, Jubal isn`t all there now is he (or he has been too close to a blast cannon or something to efect his hearing [amongst other things])

Given a one-on-one fight between the 2 Jubal vs. The Operative - I would go with the Operative who is much more refined - Mal knows this man is dangerous and hence doesn`t give him a second chance (re: Trailer)

hand-hand combat - Operative
firearms combat - either
sword combat - Well, Operative but that`s only because we didn`t see Jubal with a sword (and it would fit his style)
battle of wits - Operative again, he has a way of talking that makes sense.
humour factor - Jubal, but that`s only because as mentioned before, he`s got issues.

So, that`s my take, and because most people will only have the trailer & TV series to go by, this may be a deciding factor.

Zol, I like your breakdown, but you might also take into account the possibility people have raised that Jubal might be a 'reader.' IF he has even latent talents in that regard, it would make him have his own little strong point (I think everyone agrees he's nowhere on a par with River).

I've heard people who haven't seen the movie yet saying they wish the operative had been Early instead, to which I tell them "wait and see the movie. There's a reason he's there."

A friend who missed the first screening (but got to see the second) asked me "Do we find out about Book's backstory?" I answered "No, But yes."

As I see it, The Operative, a believer, is what Book was. By letting him live, Book is what The Operative might become.

We know that Book had some kind of high-level Alliance clearance and military or at least combat training of some kind. The way Book described The Operative to Mal signalled that he knew the type; he'd had experience with someone like this before. That The Operative was a true believer, a monster who is driven by a higher cause and repents, makes me believe he's going to find something new to believe in.

If this is true, and to my mind it is, can The Operative ever really be redeemed? Knowing Book may have once been a monster, can we forgive him?

Actually, I loved the line of the Operative at the VERY end - Mal says that if he ever sees the Operative again, he'll likely kill him. The Operative says something about how Mal won't find him - there won't BE anything there.

Does that mean the Operative, having never HAD an identity other than his Government work, now has NO identity - maybe just sort of fades away? Or that he's just now hollow inside? Or just that he's very, very good at hiding?

At any rate, I loved that line.

Per your comments above, I agree w/ most of what you say, save for one thing. One on one, I'd probably go w/ Jubal, and here's why.

Jubal is a bounty hunter. He's use to dealing w/ all sorts of unsavory folk that don't want to be caught. The Operative, as best we can tell, has some mad skills and no problems w/ killing, but I get the impression he deals more w/ folks who don't see it coming.

The Operative sure gave Mal a run for his money, though.

And as for Early- HEY!- there are always sequels!
