Yes...I am that Sean Kennedy.

What do you do on a long plane flight...? I play around with polygons....

This is what I do when trapped on an airliner for 12 hours on one day and 10 hours on another....
Flying to Japan could have it's benefits....

This time I built a Reaver ship...
With the limited references out there, and the fact this was all done on a notebook touch pad, I suppose it could be much worse.....

Them Reavers was nasty folks.

My version still needs alot of tweaking....More dirt, dents, hull tears, creepy lighting, etc. the refs and screen caps I have are not great, but for 22 hours of work on a crammed 747.... eh...

I was working primarily from the original prodution schematic. After getting home and looking at the video I can see where changes were made.

Wow that is great!! You should send it in to http://www.merzo.net/index.html (Starship Dimensions). I've been working on getting them to show Serenity, with the help of some fellow browncoats of course. They ask for side view and dimensions. I think this definitely fits the bill!!

That is brain-swivellingly cool!!

Especially considering the working conditions you were under!

Did you have anybody, kids maybe, looking over your shoulder? I'm picturing a crowd around you while you were making this!

What's next? The Alliance Cruiser?

I wish you would come and have a look at Orbiter...

You could make these creations of yours actual working spacecraft!
(Of course, they'd need to be a bit lower in the poly-count )

Just plane awesome. (Sorry, that one even made me gag...)

I sure wouldn't want to run into that ship in a darkened alley.

The Reavers are coming! Run! ^_^ Very well done. The pics look very much like the real thing. The only thing I might have done differently would have been to make the ship look a little more run down, like it was falling apart. But it is still very much awesome!

beautiful work!
I think it should have a more 'burned in atmo' look
and banged up (like it has hit stuff, and been hit by stuff) with dents

but it is amazing...

and I could talk about Reavers, and what they do all day,
but anything I saw would be spoilery
and based on seeing the Advanced Screening...
so god forbid.

But Reavers IS scary!

I use Lightwave 3D ... Thanks for the comments everyone. I intend to finish this model sometime in the next few months. I want to grunge it up and add more detailing.

I was wondering if you'd care to share a beta version of the model for the 3d firefly game we're working on...

as you can see, http://vegastrike.sf.net Vega Strike has many mods and we'd like to see firefly as one of those mods... if you could send even incomplete ship models to there then we could use them as placeholders while you polish the ship...

a pristine version of the ship would also be cool so it could be used for a civvie transport :-)

Hmm.. Needs more blood. j/k. Speaking of reavers I have a few questions I have stuck on my mind regarding them. Anyone is welcome to take a guess. Are there any female reavers, you think? I couldn't spot any and it doesn't make sense for there not to be if 10% were affected by the "PAX", some of that percentage had to fall on at least some women. (Maybe most, Ha!) Also, why don't reavers get ugly towards one another? Instead of working together which kind of throws me off as far as their priorites go (eating people alive and such). Hey don't sweat it, they're already terrifying enough. In fact I left the theater quite shaken from the after effects of witnessing such a character brought to life.

I think I'm nitpicking :P

Isn't the front supposed to be a lot more "messed up"? Or were you trying to do the way the ship looked before the Reavers meddled?

A tenth of a percent: 0.1%

I've seen so many people get that wrong. . .

And yes, the shooting script does make reference to female Reavers. There's supposed to be one on Lilac (where the bank was), but she's apparently either been cut out or she passes through the frame so quick we can't see her.

They surely do. When Serenity first arrives at Miranda, we can see what appears to be a Reaver ship getting ripped apart by one of its fellows. Plus that spotlight that tracks Serenity made me think she was being sized up as prey, then dismissed as too healthy --not worth the effort to take her down. Then there's the one that tried to attack them as they were leaving (meaning that it was either smart enough to realize they weren't really Reavers, or just didn't care).

I'm thinking Reavers are pack hunters --each ship is held together by the toughest and most dangerous Reaver aboard. Most of life is a threat assessment; if anyone shows weakness (or is stupid enough to attack, like Serenity) they become a target, but otherwise, self-defense lends itself to teamwork, of a sort.

Reavers don't want to die if they can help it, and the best reason to work with someone is 'cause they could kick your ass (and then eat it). It's not so much loyalty, but fear of the Alpha dog.

Besides, group hunting means they can bring down bigger & better prey. If they were truly rabid, the best one could hope for would be to kill everyone on one's ship, then slowly starve to death. By working together, they ensure plenty of prey for the forseeable future.

Savage is scary. Savage and moderately cunning is even scarier.

Actually, I believe the ship that was ripped apart wasn't Reavers, hence the screaming on the comm traffic.

I suspect it was a ship one of the reavers dragged all the way home to the pack, just to devour them there.

Sneakers fellow here brought up what I was thinking of. I don't believe that was a reavers ship, the trans air was picking up some major distress, from where? Certainly not reavers are crying women. I didn't hope to be called to math class either. What I intended to drag across was that the 10% "affected reavers" should half be women by normal standards, and so far seen only men. As for the alpha dog you mention, they don't seem to hold high regard for their own lives, considering they were pushing through the crevices of torn Serenity even though ones ahead were being knocked one by two by threes. None of them were taking safety precautions (of course not). I gather there is no remorse for themselves, naturally not for others. Question still nags me.

Again, I am a fan just as so many here rushing to the aid of Firefly thinking I'm trying to knock it, it simply is not the case. Seeking some clarification and some awesome points of view. Let's not get too hasty. Looking for more input on a more positive light, please others reply as well!

That's the problem; the line in the movie is "about a tenth of a percent." There is a huge difference in the numbers of potential reavers between 10% and 0.1% of the approx. population of 30 million. 3 million vs. 30,000 original reavers. The latter being correct assumption via the line in the movie. It's a nit-picking point however, and it doesn't affect the meat of your question.

One would think so, however, we don't know the exact effect of the PAX. It could bring out the "reaver" trait more often in males. Also, the nature of the way they attack (rape their victims to death) could have weaned out the female reaver population early, along with weaker males. Pure speculation on my part.

Now there's the useful feedback I needed. I think this is a very good point. Thanks!

I think a lot of the seeming inconsistencies with Reavers work themselves out when you realize that they didn't just become beastial and animalistic...they became evil. They still have the human ability to think and work together (they would have to, to live in space), but their purpose in life is to destroy everything in a way normal humans would find most horrible.

That's a very scary thought.

Folks at Vega Strike forums are trying to make a Open Source game using the series as a basis...
It would be nice to get the 3d model of the reaver mesh as well--- the one you linked to is the Serenity mesh... also both are very high poly count--it would take a skilled modeller to bring them down to about 4 or 5 textures at no more than 64,000 poly's. (though the interior can be removed)

Also we would love some volunteers to help orchastrate the mod--getting the data into the engine, etc

VS has had a lot of success with various sci-fi universes like Vega Trek and WCU
http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=30
is the place we're orgainizing at
