I’m serious here, am I the only one?

I’ve actually avoided watching it because a lot of the time they give you the wrong idea about a movie, but finally I gave in and watched it online. I hope I got the wrong idea.

It just didn’t feel right, at all.

-

On a completely insignificant and unimportant side note, Mal has the ship for five years and doesn’t change the bridge a bit, then in six months the consoles are completely remodeled? Wash must have gone overboard with his share of the Lassiter money. Too bad though, I liked the consoles.

The trailer didn’t have the feeling I expected. It seemed to be a little too concentrated on River. Yeah, it’s nice that River turns out to be some kind of space-age Buffy, but the story isn’t about her. She is ancillary to the story. Firefly is about Mal, his crew and the ship struggling to stay afloat, not about epic space battles and petite superchicks. Those have both been done, many times. Firefly was about the underdogs; I thought that was the whole point of the Construction Era theme. The impression that I got from the trailer is that it looks like the movie might take a much narrower view of the story and in doing so, perhaps cut away what was original and sophisticated about it. It might become just another prepackaged space opera. Not that it doesn't look like a very good prepackaged space opera, just not Firefly as I would have expected to see it.

Or maybe not. Trailers are notorious for being very poor representatives of the movies they advertise. Maybe the point is just to show the flashy stuff. Wouldn't be the first time that was the point of a trailer. But what bothers me is that I think the trailer might show a scene with sound in space. That's an omen.

chris:

I definitely dig the trailer; but, I'm also desperate for more Firefly. On the other hand, all the non-Flans I've shown it to (yes, I carry it around on a thumb drive on my keychain) think it looks pretty good, too.

Or else they're just being nice because I'm clearly insane about Firefly... No sense getting me all upset -- and possibly postal -- about it, hmmm?

Positively,

That may have been what firefly was about, but Serenity seems to focus on River and the people hunting her down.

I think I remember an interview of Joss Whedon and he mentioned that this movie was gonna be about River. So I wasn't surprised that the trailer showed a lot her kicking ass which I just love by the by!!

Yeah, but didn't we expect this? You're right, Firefly is not about River, but when what was supposed to be a seven-year series is compressed into a two-hour film, a guy's gotta make priorities. Since the River plot is the one that needs the most attention (the others are not critical, but people are hunting her!), I just assumed that the movie would be primarily about her.

I loved the trailer, but I didn't think it seemed very "western." Of course, we're only watching a couple of the most exciting minutes of a long film, and so it's hard to judge what we're actually going to see based on the trailer.

Of what I did see: the dialogue is great, the special effects beautiful, and my crew and ship are back. So I'm good.

Just to elaborate a bit more. I showed the trailer to a non-Fan, and she liked it so much she went out and watched the entire DVD.

I have no doubt you'll enjoy the movie, so don't fret the trailer stuff.

I didn't like the trailer either.

I liked the western aspect of 'Firefly', it was part of what made me love the show. It's a pity they seemed to tone it down for the movie. Or get rid of it, entirely.

Also, why is River kicking ass all of a sudden? I mean, sure, there was the crazy gun action in 'War Stories', but it was nothing like what she's like in the trailer.

And I liked that the show dealt with the things that weren't really important to the Alliance or anyone. Just this crew, trying to keep flying. Now it's a big epic adventure. Yawn. Been there, done that.

Hopefully the movie will be good, though.

Well, thank the folks at F*X for this, in part. The story is a natural progression of what Joss et al had in mind all along. Maybe not in the immediate future, but perhaps in season 5,6....10?

There is still some reference to what you speak, but yeah..there's the action stuff. Think of it as the big, bright, shiny object that attracts the most amount of fans, THEN maybe the less epic elements may be shown in later movies. ( Yeah, like I could figure out what Joss is gonna do next )

I didn’t expect it, but maybe I haven’t been paying attention. And maybe River is the whole point, and the show just never got far enough along to come to that. I like River and the whole River arc, but I just never saw it as being of greater importance.

No argument there. But if they have sound in space, there’s going to be problems.

Some of the things that really made Firefly stand out among science fiction were the allusions to Construction Era history, the relative roughness of the props and of course those silent space scenes. If you get rid of these things, you might still have a good movie, but will it still be as sophisticated and intelligent as the tv show?

I haven't watched TV since Babylon 5 ended (largely because I couldn't afford cable anymore (and anything less than 237 channels just won't do!)), and I'd only heard distant references to Firefly.

None of my friends had seen it (Well, one had, but he'd kept quiet about it until I mentioned the Serenity trailer!), so when I went the Jurassic Punk website...
http://jurassicpunk.com/movies.shtml
...a few weeks ago, and saw Serenity listed, my curiosity was tripped by the tiniest margin.

I thank my solid Intuition for having me save the large version to my hard drive sight-unseen and watching it on "Fill Screen" first!

As soon as I realized what I'd missed out on, I set out to fill the void.

Within days, I was fully "'versed" , thanks largely to the Hello Cowgirl site!

I downloaded "Serenity Pts. 1 & 2", "The Train Job" & "Bushwhacked" (@ 8 hrs each on my dial-up), then grabbed a big stack of my best DVDs, went to Amoeba Music & traded 'em for the Firefly DVD (which I finished in two days!).

You can track my journey here...
http://orbit.m6.net/v2/read.asp?id=23457

None of this would've happened if the trailer hadn't grabbed me by the throat!

Yeah, they look a bit Trek-ish now. Although I do rather prefer rounded corners in my spacecraft.

I am somewhat curious about these long probes...

They aren't present at the beginning of the trailer, so I'll assume they're added during the course of the BDM.

No, the real quibble I've had is with the view from the cockpit.
I wouldn't be too sanguine about engaging in the kinds of maneuvering Wash does if I couldn't have some measure of visibility off to the sides.

That doesn’t bother me, because technically, the ability to literally see where one is going is basically worthless at the kinds of velocities that one imagines one would be dealing with in a spaceship. By the time you actually “saw” something as small as another ship in front of you, it would have been too late to react, for a very long time.

So if you assume realistic physics (which is always dangerous when trying to interpret sci fi) then one imagines that Wash must be flying by instrumentation and probably a good deal of computer-aided response.

From a film makers point of view i don't think the trailer is very good. I raved about it becuase it was the first wide glimpse of the movie. Has anyone seen the new War of the Worlds trailer? Now thats how it should be done. Great Music, Great Pace. Classy. The serenity trailer should have had a better pace, removed any buffy reference and fan references and press quotes. It was like Universal were saying yeah we kinda have this film, its abit crappy, not a real film but loads of people love it so why not come see for yourself. It should have been treated as a standalone film. Somthing which people will need to see, not somthin where audiences are told to see it reagrdless of how it looks to them good or bad. You can tell Universal were confused when it came to marketing. Its very indecisive.

I enjoyed the trailer, but i'll admit it kind of made the movie look somewhat... i dont know... generic? with the techno-esque music and the "kewl" chick-kicks-ass scene and stuff.

But since I am a Firefly fan merely seeing the characters do cool stuff was enough to make me cheer.

I think that if Serenity had a big name franchise behind it (as 'Revenge of the Sith' had the 'Star Wars' brand) and they knew that it would be a hit regardless, then they may have produced more trailers, focusing on individual aspects of the film - a trailer based on each character in the same way that 'Attack of the Clones' had trailers based on 'love', 'war', etc. (I forget the names of the others).

As it is, they'll have to appeal to a large and broad audience and so, to avoid confusion, they'll hone in on one aspect of the film (probably the one with the most action) and use that to attract an audience.

I'm hoping that the film will have a lot more to it (and even if it doesn't I'll still love it), just the stuff that they've shown so far is designed to grab the attention of the larger audience. Of course it's still eye candy to the fans :D

Ok … so … I'm not the only one.

-

Before I say anything about the trailer, something about the movie.

I read it said that the next movie is about Mal, this one is River. So if this does well then you guys who think Mal is the point get your movie.

-

Onto the Trailer:

How I look at it is simple, the music you have to ignore, the pace you have to ignore, and indeed the sound effects in general. If you have a problem with any of that at all ignore it. That’s stuff that is part of the trailer, which by all counts should be considered an entirely different work.

Judging a movie based on a trailer is like judging Firefly based on one of the music videos fans have made. I might give you the right idea; it might not.

-

Of all of the things that bothered me I guess only two can really be said to be in the movie, the rest are just in the trailer.

One is some of the camera work, damned annoying arty stuff. Then again it’s not without precedent the way the CG shot went from Serenity to River in OiS was arty, and for good reason, perhaps there is a similar justification for what I did not like by way of camera work in the trailer.

The other thing was one of the violent shots, anything with River psychic-assassin goes, but for normal human beings certain things are not acceptable, kills the suspension of disbelief. Even if that person is Jayne.

Since all that I can pick out as disliking that relates to the movie is a single shot of Jayne and some camera work I don’t see any reason to connect my dislike of the trailer to the movie.

I don’t like the trailer, at all, but I see no reason to think I won’t like movie.

I didn't like it either. I haven't seen it in a while so I don't remember exactly what I didn't like about it anymore.

I also didn't like the comic book cover with Simon on it. Comic book covers are supposed to be iconic images of a character. Simon should have had a medical kit, not a gun. He only handled a gun once during Firefly and Book said that he fired it but didn't hit anyone.

Overall, I love the trailer because it gives me even the tiniest fix of Whedonesque goodness (the only trick is making it last until September 30th!)

Three things I did have a bit of a problem with, as other posters have mentioned:

1. Sound in space. The silent space scenes were one of the stylistic hallmarks of the series, and making everything go whoosh-boom like Star Wars is a bad idea IMO. That said, I realize that the way things are done in a trailer is not necessarily the way they'll appear in the final product, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one;

2. The music. The simple, rustic music of the series really kept things grounded in their historical inspiration. Going the modern route just seems like shameless pandering to the mainstream to appear "hip." I for one would be very disappointed to see "The Serenity OST featuring music from Nickleback, Slipknot, and Nelly." Then again, this is just the trailer (see #1);

3. Jayne's little fliparoo move. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it does seem a little over-the-top and WWE for what's already gone before. I can live with it though.

That is one problem I had with the trailer. It does seem like there's now going to be sound in space. Explosions and lasers firing and engines burning...with noise...in a vacuum. Not that that'll ruin the movie, but somewhat irritating to me.

When the show was cancelled, they struck the sets. That means everything was torn down into small pieces and either recycled into other sets or thrown away outright. The ship had to be rebuilt for the movie and it was revealed long, long ago that there would be noticable changes. Being a change-hating person as I am, I was irked by that news, but then I thought of all the fun my geek brethren will have cataloging all the differences and arguing over whether they are improvements or detractions.

Not everything in the movie will be exactly the way you want it to be. It's the way Joss wants it to be. Go into it to have a good time. Not to pick out ever continuity error you can find. I would have hoped browncoats were beyond that trekkie stuff.

The trouble is we are looking at the trailer through the eyes of people who have seen Firefly and this trailer is designed to hook an audience that has never seen Firefly.

There are a lot of things in this trailer that don't surprise us like a young girl beating up a Bar full of bad guys, a bad guy that kills innocent children and a captain that shoots an unarmed bad guy, but for somebody that has never seen Firefly a lot of this stuff would be very surprising and intriguing, also on top of that we have some very exiting action sequences, humor and reviews and comments about it being a cult phenomenon loved by fans and critics.

If I had never seen Firefly this trailer would have definitely sparked an interest for me and made me think, what on earth is this? I think the trailer does exactly what it was suppose to do, which is make people go "what on earth is this?" The next trailer I would expect to be more representative of the Firefly/Serenity that we know and love.

You've hit the nail on the head. We Browncoats need to realize right now that Serenity ain't Firefly. Same 'verse, same characters, same wonderful writing, but not the same scale. Hitchhiker's Guide didn't hit with fans who were expecting the movie to be an exact replica of the book. It was changed, and it was very clear going in that's how it was going to be. Serenity's gonna be the same way. I haven't seen it myself, but all the word coming out of the screenings, except for a few, is that it's a good flick. Trust in that and trust that it's not going to be another episode of Firefly.

I read the Hitchhiker's books and listened to the radio series. But understanding that the movie was Douglas' vision and it would be different from anything I'd read or heard before, I really enjoyed it. Already, after seeing the trailer for Serenity, my mother is saying "Mal looks darker. I'm not sure I like the darker Mal." Based on a 2 minute trailer. Go in with an open mind and be ready to love the movie, not to hate it, and you just might.

But just my two cents.

No, your not the only one. I liked it but my husband did not. His main complaint is it looked too much like a typical hollywood action movie trailer. My counter to that was of course, we have to rope in as many people as possible. I still stand by Joss and will continue to do so until I see the movie. I don't think he will let us down and diminish character development, etc. (as is the worry of my husband based on trailer). Also, this is only the first trailer, as with many movies they will develope 1 to 2 full trailers and often several more mini trailers and teasers. Sometimes incorporating different tones in different trailers to cover the complex nature of the film. Have faith, Joss will deliver.

You are not the only one.

I avoided watching the trailer as I wanted to stay spoiler free, but today I had a moment of weakness. Serves me right.

I can appreciate that we want to get as much appeal as possible, so have gone for a very fast, bitty, trailer, with lots of space scenes intercut with a couple of our beloved western scenes.

But, to be honest, the introduction about Buffy and Angel made me think this was going to be a Vampires/Buffy in Space film, and then seeing the scenes with River "confirmed" that.

As a Buffy fan I would probably go and see the movie on that basis, but there are a lot of people who would just get turned off by that idea and not bother to go at all.

Of course I'll go and see the film regardless - I love Firefly. I'm just not sure what I'd think if I didn't know the series. I might try running the trailer past some people who haven't seen the series and see what they think.

I do trust Joss, I'm sure the film won't disappoint. Just not sure about the trailer is all.

I loved the trailer although it only showed River. I was pumped up to see the movie - then I went.....

I didn't love the movie. There were parts I loved, the dialogue was great! The whole theater laughed out loud, drowning out what the next person said. It was very fast paced. Lots of action. But there were a few parts I didn't like, which overshadowed the movie for me. This was definitely a River movie.

Just pointing out, I believe Joss has said that there will not be sound in space in the final movie.

I LOVED that move! And Jayne is just the man-ape-gone-wrong-thing to do it.

Clearly you are able to suspend your disbelief to a level I can only dream of. I can accept psychic assassins, vampires, zombies, star trek, laser guns that fire slow moving beams of light, Godzilla, and many other things.

A normal human doing that in an unchoreographed fight, that I don’t believe. Jayne is a box dropping man ape gone wrong, not a genetically enchanted fighting machine capable of doing the calculus to figure that move out in under a second.

Plus it’s stupid, even if he could calculate the center of gravity, eyeball the velocity, figure out exactly where to put his hands and how roughly to use them the chance of knocking himself out with the feet is too much for an experienced fighter to risk.

Jayne is most definitely an experienced fighter.

WHITEFALL

My problem with the trailer, ultimately (besides that I hate that it must cater to the masses who like explody things, and it cant show character depth in 2 minutes) is what people were saying about how Serenity aint Firefly...

This always worried me, that, in theory, when you take Firefly to an epic scale, it ain't firefly anymore in some ways... I believe joss said on the DVDs that F*X wanted larger than life when the point of the show was sort of actual size. Can actual size be done in a movie? It definitly bothers me.

The series was about life. That's what I love about it. It wasn't that these people were epic adventurers, nor 'the master of all situations', they were just people, who had to do some tough things to stay alive, to keep flying. And that doesn't translate to a movie. So, it'll still be a great movie, but I can only hope it will be a great Firefly movie.

This makes me miss the series so much. :*(

I think the movie is going to be what happens when those two things collide, when people who are not heroes (in the save the world sense) are faced with enemies that really should require heroes.

Every day people in a larger than life situation, should be interesting. Generally you only see that in a true story, and even then it doesn’t usually seem realistic. We just have to have a bit of faith.

The trailer didn’t have the feeling I expected. It seemed to be a little too concentrated on River.....the story isn’t about her. She is ancillary to the story. Firefly is about Mal, his crew and the ship struggling to stay afloat

I'm with you Finn.
