Let’s say you took after certain Star Trek fans and rebuilt a part of the Firefly set (or all of it if you have the money, time, insanity, and know-how.) Now you’ve got a ship, Midbulk transport, standard radion-accelerator core, classcode 03-K64, "Firefly", what would you name it?

Personally I wouldn’t feel justified in calling it Serenity unless every detail was perfect. I don’t care how obsessive you are; it simply can’t be done.

So, you build your recreation, but if you don’t call it Serenity what would you call it?

-

Yes I am looking for ideas. No I have not built a new set on my non-existent previously unoccupied land, so don’t bother asking for a visit.

On the other hand...

If anyone has had (or will have) the money, time, insanity, know-how, and inclination to rebuild the entire set please invite me over some time, or many times, or just let me live in one of the rooms.

In fact invite me over even if it is just part of the set.

I've already named the ship in my head... The Far Venture
There's another thread here for other ship names. If I remember rightly we've got enough for a merchant fleet.

Ah, I did not know that.

Also I wanted to know more what you would name a firefly as a Firefly fan, as opposed to, say, whatever the used ship salesman was trying to sell Mal as an RPG character, or whatever.

Perhaps the distinction makes no difference, perhaps it does.

-

Other than Lost Cause, Caelum (sky, in the Latin) is all that I can think of.

The name Lost Cause symbolizes in my mind the unwillingness to give up on something good because it is unattainable.

As for Caelum, you can’t take it from me.

I could never see naming a firefly anything that didn’t somehow relate to the show.

-

-

By the way, I thought of something just a moment ago. Firefly did really seem to be a lost cause for a time, but we didn’t give up, and neither did the crew, and so Serenity is coming.

We’ve done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

Important people don't do field work.

Here's a phrase you won't hear me use often but "In my fanfic" Shadow War, I mentioned the names of three other Firefly's that our BDH's ran into during a gig...An older one without the extenders called The Axe, one highly modified red with gigantic swooping bat's wings called Everlasting, and one identical to Serenity except it was clean and painted green, called The Contessa.

I don't think you can ever beat the name Serenity though...

Someone once asked me, for whatever reason, what I would name a radio station. He was looking for call letters, so in my trademark whimsical manner, I answered "Bob."

Just a couple days later, he walked back up - looking a bit shaken - with the news that local radio station KOOL-FM had suddenly and inexplicably decided to rename itself "Bob." And so they had. They remain "Bob FM" to this day.

It's right up there in my repertoire of odd moments with experiencing an accurate premonition that singer Reba McEntire, whose music I've never even heard, was in imminent danger of breaking her leg.

Far as an appropriate name for a Firefly, I really can't top "Zug Zug the Rug Monster."

AGREY

As to the part about building a full-sized Firefly, my overly rich cousin, Riley Billings, after getting his ENTIRE family hooked on the show, managed to convince them to try and do it.
All was going well.
The ship, while outwardly appearing to be a Firefly-class vessel, was actually wuite different internally, as Riley, one of his numerous cousins working in set construction, could have had "Serenity" perfectly re-created, decided that that was too easy, and designed what he would do with a Firefly if he had to own one. He designed a ship that could outrun Cruisers, outmaneuver most other Fireflys, and outshoot your average Reaver POS (or at least have a fair chance in a firefight), and, to top it all off, could play "Ride of the Valyries" at 150 dB (in atmosphere) or flood the com channels with it (out of atmosphere).
It took him a good year to pull everything together and finally get the shell built, install major systems (or their simulators), and provide power, water, and air, along with getting the viewports to show a "Space" display. Being Riley, he kept the thing secret (not hard when contracting out to family and building it on your own couple hundred square miles of Montana), and was only five or six weeks from finishing.
All that was left was the trimming details and fitting out (paint job, non-essential furniture, foodstuffs, odds& ends) and to get the external special effects (engines & weapons) on-line.
It was looking nice, and I actually slept in the thing for two nights at his behest. A little chilly in winter, but survivable, and the amount of fun I had when playing with it (the controls worked, at least as much as possible, and from the cockpit, you would swear you were in space) was an experience nearly unmatched in my life.
Unfortunately, Riley probably should have called it something other than the "Rusty Vorpal Trashscow", but, his since of humor being what it was (and the backstory he had for this ship being what it was) he couldn't bring himself to name it anything else.
Unfortunately, Riley failed to account for the fact that the sewage system his family had installed the year before was A) Not designed to support that much wait, and B) Had the main sewage tank almost directly below where the "'Scow" was built. The engineers that built the sewage system were amazed that it supported that much wait for that long.
On December 22nd, 2004, a bored pyrotechnics expert and two of his assistants decided to test the new "Weapons Fire" effects that they were making for the "'Scow".
The day before, the sewage system had apparently given in and partially collasped, settling the forward part a good 20 feet, giving the "'Scow" a mild list forward and letting a great deal of methane began seeping up into the gigantic creation.
Pyrotechnics and large volumes of methaned do not mix.
At 1135, the pyrotechnics guys tested out their new effect, using a remote control so they could observe the flames from half a mile and judge the effect from that distance (Riley had quite a few requirements).
Instead, they got to see a very impressive fireball and a great Firefly-class's death scene which lit up enough to be seen all over Riley's property. It also spread wreckage for quite a ways and launched a smaller sewage tank 24.5 miles to land on top and crush two pigs, three hens, a cow, and a brand new H2. The rather startled neighbor was busy attempting to sue for quite awhile (although he eventually accepted the settlement)-but only after getting over being drenched in long-distance sewage.
Riley has since learned to check placement on his projects.
His newest one being building a scale-model Firefly that will fly and hover. So far, nothing above 1/50th has survived more than three flights, and his first 1/10th managed to wipe out the guest house's garage (which was luckily empty). I understand that he is sticking to the smaller models for now.
As for what I would name my Firefly, Silver Lining, Phoenix Dreams, or Flaming Knucklehead would have to be it.
Oh, and Riley was heard to say that his next full-scale "simulator" would have to be named SNAFUBAR: The Return.

Andrew Grey, a dedicated Browncoat

Actually, Fray, Serendipity is the name of the Firefly vessel in the Neverwinter Nights campaign I run. It's funny, but the player of the captain (Cy Law) has YET to see Firefly (I think he's saving it up), and CHOSE to name his ship Serendipity. The similarity to the real name was rather eerie, and yes, I think it's a great name, too!

For the record, there's an old image of the Serendipity and her original crew at:
