Okay, just got back from SW ep III ( loved it by the way ) but i do have one question.

Don't worry spolier wise, not about the flick, at least not that one it's about our very own BDM. Namely the trailer for it.

There were Three trailers before my showing of Ep III, in reverse order they were:

Stealth (never heard of it till today)

War of the worlds

And from Universal Pictures...

The Cinderella Man.

Now what I want to know is how in the heck trailer selection works ( and is it different in my homeland of Canada then it is in, say the states? ) because i think if Universal had any say in what trailer to show before this particular movie it really should have been our Serenity ( an opinion made all the stroner by the couple behind me who, after the Cinderella man trailer said "And that's a movie i'm never going to see."

Anyone?

SWep3 is distributed by the (not so) good folks at 20th century F*x. Yup, the same people who giveth, and taketh away, the television series Firefly. Ain't got nuthin' (too much) to do with Universal, who are bringing us Serenity. You won't likely be seeing any Serenity trailers with a F*x production. Not here in the GWN, not anywhere else (although you may, things can get complicated in terms of favours between the studios and distributors).

That's the essence of it. Go see any upcoming flick distributed via Uni, and you'll stand a decent chance of catching the Serenity trailer.

Someone posted elsewhere (I can't for the life of me at this moment remember who or where) that some trailers come attached to films and therefore have to be shown and others are attached by the theatres almost at random (which is why Serenity was with some showings of HHGTTG and not others.) That could be wrong, but it would explain the discrepencies in what trailers are shown and where.

I saw Ep 3 today (also in Canada) we had 4 commercials and previews for Stealth, Cinderella Man, Mr and Mrs Smith and something else I can't remember (but no War of the Worlds or Serenity).

On another note the first two commercials (for Toyota) were in French. The resulting whispered panic was hilarious.

There's two explanations:

First, most trailers are chosen and attached by the theatre itself, and can therefore be unique for each print (two identical movies shown in the same theatre may have different trailers attached).

As for "why Cinderella Man over Serenity?", take your average movie watcher (even Star Wars fans) and give them the following two lists of names:

Ron Howard, Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger

and

Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres

Any way you slice it, the first list is three of the biggest names in the business with multiple Academy Awards between them working on the same movie. That don't make it "right", but that's why...

20th Century Fox gave, the Fox Television Network took away -- different entities, albeit both owned by News Corp. 20th Century Fox actually has a lot to gain from showing the trailer for Serenity: they're still making money off the Firefly DVD set, and you'll recall how their sales shot up when the trailer hit the 'net.

Anyway, I saw the Serenity trailer in front of Revenge of the Sith. So, it does happen.

MONTANAGIRL

Here the trailers were:
Stealth
War of the Worlds
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (woohoo!)
and
Fantastic Four

I was all prepared to say, rather loudly, "Mal shot first!" if the Serenity trailer played to get the attention of all the Star Wars people, but sadly I was denied that opportunity.

Good news for you! Most likely suggests that Serenity will be at the theatre where you saw SWep3 on Sept. 30th, wherever said theatre is.

The majority of trailers are attatched, dupe neg to dupe neg, to the first reel of a distributor's previous feature(s). Often two or more trailers are attatched in this way. Saves shipping trailers separately and having the theatre folks splicing their own positive prints. I say "the majority", for certainly there's a goodly chunk of business for us post-prod folk in processing trailers that are shipped on their own.

It all comes down to the business climate: what theatres have bought, deals between studios, distributors and theatre (chains), the value of the U.S. buck vs. the Canabuck vs. the pound vs. the Euro, etc.

Just a rule of thumb: generally, a studio's trailer appears with said studio's (previous) feature.

But, as you have found, this is not always the case. All the more reason to hound local theatres about this 'lil flick called Serenity. Could make a difference.
