Jayne looks tough. It captures what he is all about. And he has a look like he just said, "Gorammit Mal, what is the ruttin plan?"

Well I’m not rich but I am insane and I’m getting all three. All those covers just look so good I don’t think I could not buy each one. At 2.99 (according to the Dark Horse Site) it seems fairly cheap.

SPG I would start saving change.

Wow, those are all great covers. Thanks for the link. I can almost hear Wash saying "Everyone knows, I'm the funny one." Simon, with a gun? He should stick to taking those things(bullets) out of people and leave the other thing to the professionals like Zoe, Jayne, Mal, and River : )

I have told my local comic dealer to get me one copy of each cover. We saw the first in the prieviews catalog scheduled to ship in July. The catalog had a fairly good add for it, which usually means they like it and expect it to rock. I'll probably be getting an extra of each issue for a friend. Man these covers are amazing. Oh and by the way my local comic shop is Spy Comics in Federal Way WA.

Just wait 'til the trade paperback or graphic novel (hardcover edition) comes out with an all NEW cover. You know it'll happen. (For those of you who are comics-impared, the TPB and GN are compilations of the individual issues.) Moo hoo haa haa....

Love the Wash one - not quite so convinced by River & Simon. For one thing, Simon's pointing a gun & looking menacing!

Hey! I'm not gonna stop you, I'm going to be too busy trying to buy them all. Besides, if me and you ever ran into each other at the comic store,I'd wonder if the Apocalypse was coming. My only problem with buying them all is that I'm a comic reader...not a collector. I take them home, and I READ them. So, I don't see the need to buy all of them, but their cover's are so cool. I think one or two might be produced short...I think I know which ones too.

INEVITABLEBETRAYAL

As an immense comics fan, I cannot wait for these to come out. I will buy all nine covers, and the TPB and the GN. Call me crazy if you will; don't care.

Love the new covers; River is just so creepifying--the gun seems so completely out of place; it's quite jarring. Wash seems to be...well, Wash; what's to say about him? He's him.

The only one I have reservations about is Simon. Now, don't get me wrong--it is certainly a well-rendered likeness of Sean. But it doesn't seem to be a good likeness of Simon (if you take my meaning). It would appear that our doctor has become two things that he manifestly was not in the series: 1) proficient with firearms, and 2) a badass. As was said earlier, Simon ought to stick to taking bullets out, not the other thing. His performance on Niska's skyplex as much as proves that.

CYBERSNARK

As I said over in the Blue Sun Room, I'm thinking (hoping) that it's not a gun, just a spare part being held in a vaguely threatening fashion.

It'd be just like Joss to (have the cover artist) pull a joke like that.

Speculation follows:

Select to view spoiler:

Mal & company go off, leaving Simon & Kaylee alone on Serenity. Kaylee tries to flirt, Simon puts his foot in his mouth, and Kaylee sends him off to the hold to get a fuel converter (or whatever).

While Simon's getting the part, the Bad Guys storm in, catching him unprepared. Thinking quickly, Simon raises the "weapon" and threatens to blow their leader away if they don't leave now.

Probably works great until Kaylee wanders in, demanding to know what's takin' so long with. . . the. . . Oh.

Well I've decided to get me:
1. Jayne
2. Book
3. Wash
(those are the ones that really captured the actors I love)
but I'm buying a more main-stream set for my brother & some friends:
1. Mal
2. Kayley
3. River

I have to say the ones I don't like are:
Inara (way too goofy IMO)
Zoe (not pretty enough, she has a very delicate chin & jaw and they made her look very masculine)
Simon (I'm just not liking gun-slinger Simon)
and what is with the leather jerkin and strap on his arm? Since when did Simon dress up like Robin Hood?
It is just so wrong.

See, this is why I just don't get Dark Horse - the women have big boobs (check out Inara - very weird) and all the guys have to have muscles (since when has Simon's forearm bulged). Grrrrrrr

I don't know many female Dark Horse fans, and I sure as hell ain't one of them. Having said that Wash looks fabby!

I'm reminded of the Angel episode Guise Will Be Guise. Maybe Simon has to impersonate some tough border world gunman, and does a little better than the last time he tried to be a diabolical master of disguise

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Regarding Simon, he has never hesitated to charge into danger when called for. While his efforts may have been inept, they were certainly genuine. He has held a gun, and even fired it. He has taken dives from railings to wrestle with foes, and has even attacked bounty hunters despite being shot. Simon is no gunslinger, but he is very much a hero at heart. I don't think he would hesitate to use a gun if the need called for it. Whether he'd hit anything is another matter.

It is Kaylee who has never been able to face danger head-on. I like the bandaid on her elbow, incidentally.

I think what you're describing is a problem with comics in general, not necessarily just Dark Horse. Image is the main offender, imho. But I think comics are diversifying lately accross the board, with attention to demographics other than 14-year old boys, which is good! :)

Gotta agree, Simon is/was a doc. Simon is kinda of pansy. I liked having Simon be the fall guy for the wimp'ish things that happened around him.

Don't believe he has suddenly drank the hair-o-the-dog and guts enough to actually shoot someone.

This is a trend in comics in general, but it's more prominent on the _covers_ of comics, because that's the first thing people see, and comic buyers are still traditionally male. Inside, I think it's slightly better.

And, to use the opportunity to plug one of my favorite comics (and one of Joss Whedon's apparently), Runaways, from Marvel. The characters are teens, the cast are mostly female. None of the female characters are particularly buxom - the only one who is, is actually slightly overweight (at least from a comic-or-TV-character perspective, probably about average from a realistic one). It's a great book all around, though, great dialog, surprising twists, and fun characters.

Although, on the covers for the book, she looks skinny too, which just goes to show what I was saying about the covers. ;)

Generally the covers are good, but I gotta say I don't understand the one for Simon. I think it's way out of character. The artist gave River a gun but the pose and expression were right for River. If you were unfamiliar with FIREFLY, the assumptions you would make about Simon based on that illustration would be way off from the Simon we saw in the series. I'm just perplexed that someone o.k.'ed that illustration to represent Simon.

Zoe, Kaylee, and Jayne's covers are perfect! But Simon looks like someone (coughJaynecough) has been feeding him steroids as a joke. "roid Rage would explane why he's holding a gun.
