I think one of the reasons BUFFY became so popular was the theme song. It rocked and maybe made people who wouldn't have been interested tune in out of curiosity.

I don't dislike Fireflys theme. (I find it going through my head while I'm at work.) But I think it's to slow and mellow. It makes you want to take a nap.

The flavor of this show requires a song that's a hybrid of rock and country. Here's my suggestion:

An instumental version of Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road".

If you've never heard it, check it out.

I disagree! I love the themesong for Firefly, and think it captures the essence of the show quite well. I also catch myself singing it to myself at work quite a bit. On a side note, my wife, who is now also an avid follower of the show, was originally lured by the theme song. She fell in love with the song and stuck around to watch an episode.

As always, just my opinion.

I concur wholeheartedly! The more I watch the show, the more I like the song.

I like the theme song now, but only because it has grown on me. When I first heard it, I hated it so much that I almost turned the channel. I'm glad I didn't.

The first time I heard the song, I wasn't sure. But now I LOVE it. I don't think it should change.

Warrick: You didn't have to wound that man.
Mal: Yeah, I know. It was just funny.

I think all three Mutant Enemy shows have awesome theme songs, but I don't think that most people watch shows just for their theme songs. Although this is kind of harsh, I see the suggestion of a new theme as a sort of betrayal.

Sorry, I love the song. Even downloaded it. And it fits the whole idea of Firefly well.

i like the theme song, actually. it was hard at first but now it's pretty catchy i guess because it's sort of western-style and that made it become a turn-off for some people their problem.

I loved the theme song as soon as I heard it. I think it's very appropriate. It fits the show quite well in my opinion. I imagine that the song is indicative of how the crew of the Serenity especially the captain may feel.

I'm not a huge fan of the theme song... but I don't know that changing it would really do anything to help the show. The show is wonderful, and with or without a great themesong, it will continue to be wonderful.

I think the theme song really stands out, showcasing Firefly as "outside the norm". I can't think of another show I've ever seen that has that type of opening number. (by the way, in the opening credits when it's showing Mal, and it's that sort of black and white/yellowy western scene of Mal wearing the duster and pulling his gun from his hip holster... I LOVE THAT!)

Joss does a great job of picking theme songs that fit the mood of the show. Buffy is the rockin song that just feels like a big group getting ready to kick booty... Angel is the sad melancholy cello that just feels so alone and forlorn. Firefly gives the Westerny/Independence feel. I think it fits... even if I don't really like it.

Well then, call me "Judas". I guess Mal will have to threaten to send me out the airlock.

I think if you're already a sci-fi or Whedon fan, the song doesn't matter so much. I just think if you want to attract people who haven't heard of the show, people who are just channel-surfing, than a theme-song with some punch is needed.

Anyway, they should have gotten Willie Nelson to sing the theme. THAT would have been cool.

The theme song seems perfect to the show- it has all the necessary features for a folk song:

-a catchy melody that echoes to tenor of the story, easily passed from one person to another (several of you have mentioned that you find yourself humming it at work)

-easy to remember lyrics that condense the theme (take me out to the black, tell 'em I ain't comin' back)

The first time I heard it, I immediately thought that this is a song that would be part of the repetoire of Rhysling, the blind minstrel of the spaceways. If you're not familiar with his mythic life, check out Heinlein's "The Green Hills of Earth".

I love the song Copperhead Road, I think it would be quite fitting for Firefly, but I do quite like the actual song too.
I doubt if a theme song would make or break a series, or even significantly alter viewing numbers. Having said that the Buffy theme does rock, although I prefer the Angel theme.

Well, I love American traditional/roots music, and I think Joss did a lovely job in composing "Ballad of Serenity." It really has a traditional (or at least neo-traditional, whatever that means) sound. IMHO, they should keep it--captures the spirit of the show nicely, and a decent song to boot. I rather like all the traditional/trad-sounding music ME uses for the series, actually--both incidental soundtrack music, and the dance/hootenany/drinkin' music we hear on the planets they visit. The song for Jayne on Canton was very much in the tradition. Nice touch.

And since I love roots music so much, I'm of course a huge Steve Earle fan. Copperhead Road rocks, which is actually part of the problem for using it on Firefly. Mind you I love the song, but I think acoustic, traditionalish music suits
Firefly better. That, and the fact that its lyrical content very much roots it in 20th century America, which your instrumental suggestion does mitigate, though.

I was just thinking the other day, actually, that a song by one of Steve Earle's main direct influences, Townes Van Zandt (they were close friends, actually), "Lungs" would be appropriate for background music in a bar scene on Firefly. Lyrics here: http://home.swipnet.se/~w-36794/tvz/tvz_019.html. Check out the song itself, though, if you can. The original by Townes, which has an old-timey feel with fiddle, not Lyle Lovett's cover, which is good but much more comtemporary and rock-y.

I agree, I think the Angel theme is better. I love hearing it. And I get the chills when I hear the Firefly theme.

The Angel Theme is one of the best but so is Firefly's and I don't really like the one from buffy.

All three theme songs reflect their own show so perfectly. I love the Buffy theme, but it would never work on Firefly or even Angel. The same goes for the rest of them. Firefly's good because it's got words, it's harder to sing Buffy or Angel to yourself. lol.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I would never think of changing Firefly's theme, and I hope Joss doesn't either. Everytime I watch the DVDs the theme gives me chills and I sing right along loudly.

I like the Angel theme better than the Buffy theme too. Both are very well suited for their shows, and I like both of them.

Don't be silly. All this "betrayal" stuff. Like /all/ the actors said the song had to grow on them--and remember what the guy who played Wash (whose name I cannot spell) said about having his own suggestions. I think one of them involved a polka.

I say--let Weird Al loose on the thing. ;)

So, I had never seen the show, but a friend strong-armed me into watching his Firefly DVD over Xmas. The opening scene of the battle for Serenity Valley was decent, but I was still emotionally neutral regarding it, sort of hanging out waiting to see where the show was going to take me before I decided what I really thought of it. Then the Firefly logo burned through the screen, and the opening theme played, and I realized that where the show was going to take me was out into the black, and that we weren't ever coming back. :) And so, without even having seeing a whole episode of the show, I was a Firefly fan.

Seeing the rest of the series just bore out that feeling, in spades.

And, my wife loves the theme song so much that she made an MP3 of it and listens to it on her walkman!

Yep. The theme song is on my Mac and I listen to it frequently. To me it falls into a blues categpry though, which means that someone like Clapton should cover it. Not that it needs redoing at all.

"Could you be more specific"?

The first time I heard the theme song I was against it. A prejudice against C&W I guess.

It grew on me though, partially on its own merits and partially because it fit so perfectly with the show.

Then again my opinion isn't worth much, cause I think the theme song to Enterprise is the best part of that show.

I know we're not the majority but I agree with you 100%.

I hate the themes of TOS and TNG with a passion, love Voyagers theme, am kinda neutral to DS9s and find the ENT theme refreshing and better than the rest of the show.

of the Whedon shows I like the Buffy theme the most. it fit's the show _and_ is good music.
angels is good but not so much my style and Fireflys fit's the show and I kinda like it even if it isn't what I'd normally listen to.

and I was sooooo disappointed with Once More With Feeling because I simply cannot stand the music. there are one or two songs I can actually listen to without being totured by it. that's namely "Rest In Peace" and "Standing" the rest is just awful. I appreciate the idea and the voices of the actors are passable (SMG, NB, EC) to excellent (ASH, AB) the story and the lyrics of the songs was cool but I can't watch it because of the lala-kinda music. much too shallow and 'musicalstyle' for my taste. ok so that's what it was supposed to be but you can make a musical with real music (Rocky Horror) and it works too. I expected too much maybe because it's supposed to be really great and the music on Buffy always was good to great and never ever that annoying.

but we've all got different taste and that's a good thing.

sorry for going off-topic and ranting. it just came to mind.

I saw this ep before watching Buffy regularly, thus had no idea what the hell any of the charactors were singing about. But for some reason, I really liked it alot - with the possible exception of Xander's song. But that one was the funniest of them all.

Then when I watched the same episode after seeing all the episodes leading up to it (and I mean ALL the episodes), I *loved* it.

*Loved* it.
