Hi! I just got back from the Browncoats Ball,
a full (really full!) weekend of great fun:
Thursday night we saw 'Serenity' again a wonderful pizza parlor/movie theater in Oakland
Friday we did a Fanty & Mingo's style dinner/dance at the Empress of China
Saturday morning we had a whole boat to ourselves (with cash bar) for a tour of the bay
Saturday night was a truly spectacular ball with some original costumes from 'Heart of Gold' worn as well as some incredibly beautiful copies of other gowns from the Shindig (and the gentlemen all looked amazing too)
I've posted a lot of photos here:

I have to really thank all the organizers,
they couldn't have done a better job: everyone had a wonderful time!
can you believe this (winner best costume)

It was a fantastic weekend indeed. Kudos to the SF Browncoats for a job well done, and to all the wonderful folks who came and made it so much fun, especially Embers for the lovely dinner conversation (and for having a scythe in her car). I'd start naming names, but I'd forget someone and feel terrible. You're all cool!

Great photos Embers. Apparently I always have my mouth open.

(I guess I should have given him a bigger tip, huh?)

Thanks for posting the photos. Those are some BEAUTIFUL gowns! (And the men look good, too. But I'd rather wear the gowns.

Life is short, brutal, and unpredictable. EAT DESSERT FIRST.

I am part of the SF Browncoats and love the coordinators to death, but the thanks really go to Ray Hill and Ammy Hill. This entire bash was all them. They did a fabulous job and next year's BB organizers have quite the shoes to fill!

Those two were phenomenal from start to finish. They deserve a week in a nice, quiet spa. Major kudos to Adam for the graphic design (and usable map!) that made the whole package look classy.

you are absolutely right, from start to finish they did a brilliant job organizing!
The venues they picked,
the boat ride,
and particularly the ball,
were all brilliant and memories I will cherish.
They looked after us, getting people to the wharf and making sure people were dancing and having fun,
I can't can't say enough.

except 'thanks'!

Wow, I was trying to look as snooty and intimidating as I could and I managed it quite well. I look like Banning Miller's mom! (Nice shot of Dan, though.)

Not very many people caught on to Dan's "Order of the Blue Sun."

I love that shirt and jacket you made, Embers. Unfortunately we can't come to Flan, though I really, really want to now that I know people and have heard it's the last one BE is planning. We are renovating our house, and the Ball set us back a couple of new windows. (Pout) We'll see what happens.

However, I think I've convinced Dan to check out our local Scottish dancing club.

Oh Cliomuse, I'd been meaning to tell you about Terry Pratchett's signing:

On Oct 15th from 3-5pm (but I'm told it will be crowded and to get there early)
at Copperfield Books
140 Kentucky St
Petaluma, CA 94952

he isn't going to be anywhere else in the Bay area,
at least not until next year...and then who knows.

Thanks for all the URLs, embers.
And for pix you posted here.
Dan's O. B. S. is quite beautiful.
(The thought of Mr. & Mrs. ClioMuse engaged
in Highland flings is most intriguing.)
Re Pratchett, I am a virgin and will have to
take your word for it. (Are you going to take
the scythe to the signing??)

FB - Pratchett is WONDERFUL. He is our current "couples" reading. Mr. 'Muse and I trade the books back and forth and much discussion ensues. The dancing thing could be more amusing than intriguing. Clan Cliomuse is a tad clumsy.

Embers - I hope we can make it to the signing. If nothing else, we'd love to see you again.

So stay away from the sword dances until
you've got a lot of practice in and paid up
your insurance.
Next question: Kilts or trews?
And will ye be takin' up the pipes?

Amusingly, when I used to live in York, England, I was the Betty for the longsword dancing club. I have been ritually decapitated. I will try not to make that a reality!

I would love to see Mr. 'Muse in a kilt, but I may have to wait a long time for that, so trews for now. The club is mostly female, so this could be interesting, especially with costuming.

I may take up recorder again. I love the pipes, but they appear to be more complicated that the French Horn, which used to be my weapon of choice.

Embers: Trying to clear the calendar for the signing. We'd love to see you as well. I'm bringing my copy of "Night Watch" if we do go. Darn that man for making me weep! Tragic relief indeed.

I think I may have broken my foot, or at least badly dislocated something, at Scottish dancing last night! I kept dancing, thinking it was nothing, but now it's definitely someting. Where is Simon when I need him?

I swear some of the ladies at dancing were sizing Dan up for a kilt. There were four men (okay, two men and two boys) and a zillion women. He was quite popular.

Owies!
Remember "R-I-C-E"

Rest
Ice
Compression
Emergency Room
oops,
Elevation
Then the doc, not the ER because the ER will
cost you a fortune. (Recent experience here)

Take care of that thing!!!
(there is also Chocolate)
(and drugs)

Dan must join the Kilted ones.
Nathan would be proud of him.

Thanks for the well wishes and good advice. You are right about the emergency room. Fortunately this community is full of walk-in clinics. However, last time I had an x-ray my insurance didn't want to pay for it. They claimed it was unecessary because the bone was not broken. HUH!(Thank you Blue Sun...I mean Blue Shield.)

The good news is it isn't broken. It is wrapped up nice and tight so it doesn't re-dislocate, and hurts like h e double toothpicks, but should heal up nicely. I needs me some proper dancin' shoes.

Greebo, Heee!
