I'm just curious as to how my fellow Canucks (and everyone else too!) think the confidence vote will go tonight.

To recap, the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois are voting for an amendment to the throne speech, the Liberals and NDP are voting against the amendment. The Liberals have also decided that the vote will be a confidence vote and should they lose, they/we will go back to the polls.

Here's an article from the Canadian Press (most of the news sites I've visited so far have had the exact same one) which explains the situation far better than I can:

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics/2004/10/07/659920-cp.html

Here's another article, this time from the CBC:

My questions for y'all:

If the government falls, should the Governor-General call an election (four months after the last one)? Or should the GG ask Opposition Leader Harper to form a government?

If there is an election, who will win?

My opinion is that they should try to avoid another election (especially one that would coincide with the US one). I don't think that a minority government led by Harper would be any more successful than Martin's but it would be interesting to see the Liberals attempt to deal with the situation.

As to who would win... I think it would be whoever is not blamed for the government's fall. Which unfortunately will likely be the decision of the media. The way it's shaping up so far, I think the Conservatives will get the blame and the Liberals will get back in with a small minority .

Even if the vote passes, I can't see this government lasting long.

Should be interesting...

Well, we know now it that the situation is past (though unfortunately, not enough details yet for my liking!) and the government is still holding up.

However, I can't see it lasting very long at all if they try to make every single little thing a confidence vote.

I think the Conservatives will try to hold it together until after their policy convention, as long as Paul Martin gets down off of his high horse and actually learns to come to a compromise. Silly me, I thought he would've figured that out by now.

I agree that the media blame will largely dictate the outcome of the next election, and that the Conservatives will likely be blamed for the government's downfall. I sure hope that there is not another Liberal majority right away, I don't know if I can handle more frustration at seeing the wastefulness and favoritism towards certain Liberal-friendly companies.

Nah... it's all par for the Canadian course.

lol! I haven't been paying attention to the new session in Parliament.. mainly because who frickin' cares?

Anyho' the current minority government situation will NOT take down the Martin Government (as much as we'd like to see that happen... oh wait, maybe not, considering the alternatives) and in fact the Martin governement are in a GREAT postion.

Why?

It's the same position Trudeau was in back in the day. After cutting the budget for 10 frickin' years now all the Martin Monsters have to do is throw money at every fuzzy, feel good, offer in the House. If any opposition comes up the PM will have the time of his life critisizing the opposition... the OPPOSITION (get it?) ... it's a win/win situation for the Liberals.

And good for us Canadians as it will prolly mean lots of payola for the provinces & territories... something desperately needed in a country where all the schools, hospitals, etc. have been closed down while Centre Block has been subsidizing American Corporations! Ack! Oh... don't get me started on balless, brainless, cum slurping Upper Cans... Ok, that's enough.

Politics students attempting to find legitimate forms of procrastination by watching CPAC (which is strangely addictive btw).

Not that I'd ever do that *looks innocent*

But does the Martin government realize the position that they're in? I would hope they would be smart enough to take advantage of it, but their arrogance may get the better of them. They almost pushed a confidence vote over an amendment to an amendment. Yes, the conservatives looked like they were going to back down (albeit by claiming illness on the part of the MPs) but they probably won't do that every time.

We can only hope... but isn't throwing money at things without actually fixing them what the Liberals are good at *cough* gun registry, health care *cough* ?

I guess only time will tell

Edited to fix markups. Oops.

Err...

CPAC is indeed strangely addictive. And I don't even have the "politics student" excuse.

I haven't watched it in so long though! Stupid physics thesis.

MY FAV ANGEL QUOTE!!!

You are so cool. Really.

Well, the Martin government is so arrogant something might crack but the thing is, and I'm going out for the big poicture here, Canada is a country without a vision. We are just following the economics of our fat neighbors just south. That is, Corporate greed, ecological plundering, a fascist agenda, and lies, lies lies. Considering Canada has already given up it's most valuable resouces to American interests (including water! Talk about vision!) Canada really just does what the Americans tell it. What little money is left over is politicised into issues like Health Care and such... pennies to be fought for. Sick.

All those people on cpac are just there to desperately rationalize and justify thier hollow, immoral, government appointed ministry positions.

It's all a game.

Mine too!! I can't even remember what episode it was but the quote just sticks in my head. It really sums up the series. And life.

You too.

That would make a good bumper sticker - Canada: Who needs vision? (or something better, I can't think of anything witty right now)

Maybe that is the vision, that we have none. It's a complex plan to avoid doing nothing for decades while frittering our money away and keeping the public completely oblivious.

Or maybe not.

I disagree with saying that we just blindly do whatever Americans tell us to do since if we did, Chretien would have joined the coalition in Iraq (whether or not Martin would have joined is a different story). There's also the fact that the US would love it if we would privatize our health care system so all the private American hospitals could come set up shop. But we don't. On occasion Canada does refuse. But it's probably out of sheer stubborness than any type of vision or belief.

It may all be just a game but I'm not ready to give up on it yet. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment . Who knows?
