An open letter to all the people crying "Arm the teachers"

1. Yes, my students are very important to me. No, I should not be expected to take a bullet for your kid, nor am I willing to kill what usually ends up being another student in the event of a school shooting scenario. This does not make me a bad teacher, nor does it mean I'm a crappy, selfish human being.

2. I did not sign up for what you're proposing. I have my own family and my own child to come home to, and yes, I definitely love them more than your student.

3. You seem unaware of the constant time and training RESPONSIBLE and EFFECTIVE law enforcement officers put in to make sure their skills are up to par and they will hit what they're trying to hit instead of an innocent when/if the time comes. I already work 10+ unpaid off-hours per week for my students; I'm not about to be saddled with yet another responsibility.

4. If I shoot and miss, I'm liable. If a shooting happens and I don't react by using my gun against the assailant, I'm liable. I'm not protected from liability for failure to act like police are. I will be blamed for whatever ends up happening because I didn't "do my duty."

5. The political party the majority of you seem to support doesn't even trust me to assign appropriate books to your student or teach the inconvenient truths of history to your student. But you have the audacity to trust me with a firearm around them?

"Arm the teachers" is a way for lawmakers and ammo-sexuals to pass the buck. We will not become your scapegoats for yet another issue.

House Republican leaders told their members to vote against 8 gun-safety bills, citing opposition from the NRA and Gun Owners of America

The House is set to vote Wednesday on a package of gun-related bills dubbed the "Protect Our Kids Act."

GOP leaders told members to vote against the package, calling it the "Unconstitutional Gun Restrictions Act."

House Democratic leaders have scheduled votes for Wednesday evening on the "Protecting Our Kids Act" — a package of seven gun violence-related measures that includes raising the age for legal purchase of semiautomatic rifles and shotguns to 21, closing the "bump stock" loophole, and other measures aimed at preventing the illegal trafficking of guns.

The House will also vote on the "Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act," a federal "red flag" bill that would allow family members and law enforcement officials to temporarily block firearm access to those who a court determines pose a danger to themselves or others.

In a "whip notice" sent to rank-and-file members on Tuesday afternoon, House GOP leadership urged a "no" vote on all eight bills, referring to the seven-bill package as the "Unconstitutional Gun Restrictions Act." They wrote that House Democrats had "thrown together this reactionary package comprised of legislation that egregiously violates law-abiding citizens' 2nd Amendment rights and hinders Americans' ability to defend and protect themselves and their families."

The email also noted the opposition of the National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America, including links to talking points from the NRA about both the gun package and the red flag law. Leaders also noted the opposition of Heritage Action for America, an advocacy group tied to the conservative Heritage Foundation.

"Due to the importance of this issue, votes on this legislation will be considered in future candidate ratings and endorsements by the NRA Political Victory Fund," declares one of the memos shared by party leaders.

Uvalde School District Suspends Its Entire Campus Police Force For Unknown Period

The school district of Uvalde, Texas, suspended its entire campus police force Friday, saying new developments have “uncovered additional concerns with department operations” following officers’ response to a deadly mass shooting at a district elementary school in May.

The suspension will last “for a period of time,” the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District said in a statement. The district has asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide additional troopers for now.

“We are confident that staff and student safety will not be compromised during this transition,” the UCISD statement said.

The district has also placed Lt. Miguel Hernandez on administrative leave. Hernandez had taken over as UCISD police chief a month after the deadly shooting when his predecessor, Pete Arredondo, was himself placed on administrative leave. Arredondo was ultimately fired for how long it took officers to confront the gunman, who killed 19 young children and two adults at Robb Elementary on May 24.

Ken Mueller, the district’s director of student services, was also placed on leave but elected to retire instead, UCISD said Friday.

The district said it’s still cooperating with two investigations into the shooting response ? one by a team of private investigators the district hired, and one by the Texas Police Chiefs Association.
