As a chaser, I would recommend reading Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World". It's about a dystopian future, for sure, but with the depressing rain cloud you're going to be putting over your head after filling it with Orwell's best and realizing just how right he was about nearly everything he wrote 7 decades ago, while concurrently realizing that the only thing he really got wrong was how advanced technology will have gotten and how easy it would be to keep track of everyone, you're going to want something to lighten up the mood.

At least in Huxley's prediction of the future, everyone is genetically bred as to not have a single point of intelligence higher than what their function will be in society as to not have any capability to think about how shitty they've got it, and then everybody gets free wonder drugs without any negative side effects every day for completing their chores and they go about life so high that they wouldn't even care if they did have the capacity to think for themselves.

Still not a great vision of the future, but it sure beats Orwell's terrifying:

I had thought about mentioning that during one of my edits of the above post, but I decided not to since the idea it used to be part of the school cirriculum at any point in history seems like it could have been some sort of Old Wive's Tale.

The fact that Whozit doesn't seem to be aware of the origin of "Ministry of Truth" made me refrain from bringing it up for that reason. But just because he didn't read it in high school doesn't mean that he wasn't taught it in high school. That being said, neither Orwell or Huxley were ever at any point part of my English courses, even the three that I took in college. But I can say with near certainty that it wasn't part of the curriculum and the woman who taught that class (who also headed the Journalism club) was a bit of an outside of the box thinker compared to most of the teachers I had.

I didn't read 1984 until I was about 23 years old.

Did you ever read it as an assignment in school?

I could definitely see why they would do what they could to make sure that as few people as possible ever read it, without outright burning it (until at least there comes a point in time where there's nobody left that knows or even cares that it was ever a thing).

Although Harrison Bergeron always stuck with me since I read it in my Junior year, I never really understood why until I read 1984/Animal Farm/Brave New World. I can honestly say that I saw the entire world through a different lens after reading those books. It's quite possible that I wasn't even much capable of all of critical thought until I exposed myself to them.

Sometimes I hesitate when anything close to this subject comes up to recommend reading these books to other people. Part of me wonders how much different my life would be now, nearly 20 years after reading them than it is, had I not. I never sympathized with Cypher's character on the Matrix for selling out his crew so he could eat steak again until after I read those books.
