When Putin is finished with Ukraine, he will be invading another NATO country, but not Germany nor France nor UK nor USA.

Germany, France and the UK would have done nothing, as all weak countries will do nothing, until they are attacked. The USA helped Ukraine and then those other countries decided to help. If the USA stops helping, all other countries stop because their whiny cowardly cheapskate citizens don't want their Prime Minister to get involved. All of NATO would just stand back and watch as Putin invades the next NATO country.

Exactly.

Thank you for proving my point.

Disband NATO.

I think Putin had great plan to conquer Europe, one country at a time. If Ukraine had a president much like Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, the guy who immediately fled the country, Ukraine would have fallen two months ago and Putin would be moving troops to border of the next country on his hit list. But the USA had already sent enough ammo to stop Putin until more ammo arrived. So long as the USA and the other NATO countries don't run out ammo for Ukraine, Putin can't move to the next country on his secret hit list. Speculation is that Moldova is next for Putin.

If Putin’s plan was to keep NATO from encroaching any further towards Russia’s border, he fucked up big time. Finland went from about 17% wanting to join NATO to 61% after Putin invaded Ukraine. When Finland joins NATO in a few weeks, it will double NATO’s border with Russia. That’s just one way Putin fucked up. The rest are too numerous to list.

Ireland has called for a diplomatic response to Moscow after mocked-up images on Russian state television showed nuclear weapons destroying Ireland and the U.K.

During a segment on Russia's Channel One, anchor Dmitry Kiselyov described a nuclear attack as a graphic showed the islands of Ireland and Great Britain being wiped off the map.

"The island is so small that just one Sarmat missile is sufficient to sink it once and for all," said Kiselyov on Sunday, as he boasted about the nuclear-capable weapon Russia tested last month.

Kiselyov also said that a Poseidon nuclear underwater drone, an experimental Russian weapon, could "plunge the British Isles into the depths of the sea." He said that the 100-megaton warhead could cause a "gigantic tidal wave up to 500 meters (1,600 feet) high," which would also carry "extreme doses of radiation."

An Irish Foreign Affairs Department spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement that "there can be no justification for threatening use of nuclear weapons. Ireland has long argued that nuclear weapons offer no security, and their use would result in devastating humanitarian consequences."

The BBC's Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg said about the comments by Kiselyov, considered as one of the Kremlin's chief propagandists, "It's another attempt by the Kremlin to demonize the West in the eyes of the Russian public, to get Russians to believe the Kremlin narrative that their country is a besieged fortress surrounded by enemies."

The rhetoric on Russia's Channel One pushing the Kremlin's narrative about Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has repeatedly referred to Russia's nuclear capabilities.

Last week, Duma deputy Aleksey Zhuravlyov, chairman of the nationalist Rodina political party, told the Russian program 60 Minutes that the Sarmat missile should target the U.K. because of its support for Ukraine.

During the discussion, panelists discussed the prospect of European cities being hit by Russian missiles.

Russia Ambassador to U.S. Says NATO Not Taking Nuclear War Threat Seriously, but that is false:

U.S. Strategic Command chief Admiral Charles A. Richard said, "The nation and our allies have not faced a crisis like Russia's invasion of Ukraine in over 30 years. President Putin simultaneously invaded a sovereign nation while using thinly veiled nuclear threats to deter U.S. and NATO intervention."

The United States has made clear its concerns about Russia's arsenal of theater-range nuclear weapons, which commonly refers to weapons armed with low-yield, tactical warheads, of which the U.S. Intelligence Community assesses Russia possesses between 1,000-2,000, a figure that is projected to grow.

Russia's envoy to the United States has told Newsweek that leaders of the U.S.-led NATO military alliance do not grasp the true gravity of a potential nuclear conflict erupting, as a tense war of words among powers looms over the ongoing fighting in Ukraine.

As officials and other influential figures of the U.S. and allied nations accuse the Kremlin of summoning the specter of nuclear war over NATO's support for Ukraine against Russia's devastating invasion, Moscow's ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov, disparaged what he called "a flurry of blatant misrepresentation of Russian officials' statements on our country's nuclear policy."

In fact, he said it was those in the Western bloc that have proven irresponsible in their handling of what has been described as one of the most dangerous moments since the Cuban Missile Crisis six decades ago.

"The current generation of NATO politicians clearly does not take the nuclear threat seriously," Antonov told Newsweek.

And while U.S. officials cast Russia as the aggressor in escalating nuclear tensions, Antonov called these accusations "baseless," and "part of a propaganda campaign launched against Russia in response to the steps taken to neutralize threats to our national security emanating from the Ukrainian territory."

He then outlined the "conditions under which the use of nuclear weapons is possible"
as per Russia's official doctrine, which he said states that such weapons of mass destruction "can be used in response to the use of WMD against Russia and its allies, or in the event of aggression against our country, when the very existence of the state is jeopardized."

Rhetoric touched upon the potential for nuclear escalation in the opening days of the conflict, especially after Putin announced on February 27 that his nuclear forces were being placed "on a special mode of combat duty."

Antonov said Western nations "misinterpreted the decision." But Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu "publicly explained that it was only about the work shifts of strategic forces commands which began to perform combat duties with reinforced personnel."

"This means that Russia has increased its vigilance against the backdrop of extremely confrontational statements by Western countries," Antonov said, "including NATO member states that possess nuclear weapons." Three possess nukes and none of the three threatened to nuke Russia, but Russia repeatedly threatened to nuke them over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, just to clarify.

Putin tells the world, once again, that he is ready to nuke them:

President Vladimir Putin will send a "doomsday" warning to the West when he leads celebrations on Monday marking the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

A fly-past over St Basil's Cathedral will include the Il-80 "doomsday" command plane, which would carry Russia's top brass in the event of a nuclear war, the Defence Ministry said.

In that scenario, the Il-80 is designed to become the roaming command centre for the Russian president. It is packed with technology but specific details are Russian state secrets.

Putin has repeatedly likened the war in Ukraine to the challenge the Soviet Union faced when Adolf Hitler's Nazis invaded in 1941.

"The attempt to appease the aggressor on the eve of the Great Patriotic War turned out to be a mistake that cost our people dearly," Putin said on Feb. 24 when he announced what he called a special military operation in Ukraine.

"We will not make such a mistake a second time, we have no right."

Less than two decades ago, U.S. President George W. Bush joined Putin for the May 9 celebrations in Moscow. This year no Western leader was invited, the Kremlin said.

The Kremlin did not respond to requests for comment on what Putin might say in his speech, to be delivered from the Red Square tribune in front of Vladimir Lenin's Mausoleum.

Last year, Putin jabbed at Western exceptionalism and what he said was the rise of neo-Nazism and Russophobia - trends he has returned to again and again when addressing the issue of Ukraine.

Turns out the whole freaking country is still/newly fixated on WWII. Part of Putin's new propaganda push. There's even a word for it:

"But already for some years, the victory cult has been referred to by critics as pobedobesie, a derogatory play on the Russian words for victory and obscurantism – “victorymania” is an approximate English translation."

Much more about the new obsession and how Putin is using it to stoke hatred of anything not Russia:

https://bit.ly/3LQb3rl

"Rhetoric of 1945 victory over Nazis has become more twisted over two decades of Putin’s rule

Many see this talk of “denazification” as pure propaganda. For sure, there have been other convincing explanations offered for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: a fear of Nato expansion, a post-imperial disdain for Ukrainian language and culture, and an isolated leader who spent the Covid pandemic in a bunker pondering his legacy.

But the rhetoric of victory and of fighting Nazis, which has become gradually more twisted over the past two decades, also plays a role.

Of course, it takes a particular mindset to look at Russia’s expansionist war, with the executions, targeting of civilians, filtration camps and harassment of dissidents at home, and come to the conclusion that it is the Ukrainians who are the Nazis.

As this pobedobesie metastasised year on year, the phenomenon took on forms that were ever more grotesque: schools put on performances in which the children dressed up as Soviet soldiers; people posing as captured Nazis were paraded through the streets. Ever more opponents of modern Russia were branded as Nazis, neo-Nazis or Nazi accomplices."

Turns out everyone who isn't Russian is a Nazi.

Which means all Putin's followers are the real Nazi's. With the introduction of cell phones and the internet it has become apparent the Russians who live by the lie suffer from learned helplessness.

Learned helplessness occurs when a person believes that they cannot overcome challenges even if given an opportunity to do so. It usually occurs after repeated exposure to mental trauma, abuse, and psychological maltreatment.

Russian Space Boss Warns Against Nuclear War: NATO 'Destroyed in Half Hour'

"In a nuclear war, NATO countries will be destroyed by us in half an hour," Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said in a post on his Telegram channel on Sunday.

Then the Russian switched to pious mode, as if he hadn't just made a threat to nuke Europe:

"But we must not allow it, because the consequences of the exchange of nuclear strikes will affect the state of our Earth," he said. "Therefore, we will have to defeat this economically and militarily more powerful enemy by conventional military means."

"Such a victory is possible with the full solidarity of the entire country with the army, with the mobilization of the state economy, with the transfer of the military-industrial complex and related industrial sectors of Russia to a military footing," he wrote. "And this must be done immediately and quickly."

In another post, Rogozin said NATO was "waging war" against Russia, using Ukrainian forces to fight a proxy conflict.

https://www.newsweek.com/russia-space-boss-warns-against-nuclear-war-1

The more Russians talk about nukes, the more likely they are terrified this war is already lost unless they use nukes. They never clarify whether they want to nuke only Kyiv, nuke all of Ukraine, nuke just the 3 countries in NATO that have nukes, nuke all of NATO, or nuke the world. Maybe nuking Putin would be Russia's best nuclear option.

That is a dimwitted interpretation, SignyM. What the Russians have been broadcasting is that Putin's military will destroy Ukraine the old fashion way with artillery, but if that doesn't work fast enough, before glorious leader Putin, the pinnacle of virile manhood, loses his cool there are always nukes, but Russia won't use the nukes because Russia is full of humanitarians/ecologists/friends-of-the-Earth who care so deeply for the preciousness of all life. You know that beep-beep noise dump trucks make when backing up? That sound is on Russian TV news as it dumps another truck load of bullshit about the war and how Putin is winning because he is a big wiener same as Trump is a wiener.

Today, Russia again threatened the world with nukes. I expect a nuclear threat from Russia at least once per week from now to Christmas.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is warning Thursday that the "pumping of Ukraine by NATO countries with weapons" brings the risk of the conflict "turning into a full-fledged nuclear war."

Medvedev, who now is the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote in a Telegram post that such an escalation would be a "catastrophic scenario for everyone."

"The pumping of Ukraine by NATO countries with weapons, the training of its troops to use Western equipment, the dispatch of mercenaries and the conduct of exercises by the countries of the Alliance near our borders increase the likelihood of a direct and open conflict between NATO and Russia instead of their ‘war by proxy,’" he said.

"Such a conflict always has the risk of turning into a full-fledged nuclear war," Medvedev added.

"You just need to think about the possible consequences of your actions," he also wrote in the post.

Lithuanian foreign minister says Putin and Russian regime must be removed to stop ‘warmongering’

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said the removal of not only Vladimir Putin, but the entire regime that supports him, is necessary to stop Russia’s “warmongering” and predicted the Kremlin leader will become increasingly erratic as his battlefield losses grow in Ukraine.

Landsbergis also said his nation is seeking a permanent US troop presence, calling it “the biggest deterrent to an aggressor like Russia,” as well as fortified support from NATO at next month’s leaders’ summit in Madrid.

Once Putin hears about Lithuania, maybe this weekend Russia will threaten to nuke the world. Maybe two threats or even three nuclear threats per week will be coming in the future.

How many seconds does it take for a ballistic missile to reach London, Paris or Berlin?

That’s the question pundits on Russian state TV were pondering as the war in Ukraine entered its third month.

The eerie estimates were accompanied by a graphic showing the trajectories that Moscow’s intercontinental ballistic missiles would take to reach the capitals of European nations that supply Kyiv with the most military aid.

All the while, pro-Kremlin host Olga Skabeyeva and the experts on her “60 Minutes” show on the Russia-1 TV channel were nonchalantly joking about how the West should tune in.

Just months ago, the graphic, the rhetoric and the seeming casualness of such conversations would have been shocking, even by the standards of Russian propaganda.

But with Russia’s military struggling, its rivals emboldened and the neighbor it invaded responding with defiance, NBC News watched dozens of hours of state media coverage to find the Kremlin and its mouthpieces increasingly reaching for new and more outlandish claims to justify the Ukraine invasion.

“The Kremlin has relatively few instruments to try and influence the West, and therefore it’s resorting to all this spine-chilling rhetoric as a means of attempted intimidation,” said Mark Galeotti, a senior associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank based in London. That leaves “the dark power of looking crazy and dangerous” as one of the very few tools at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s disposal, he said.

Military-Industrial Complex Is Itching to Send “Hunter-Killer” Drones to Ukraine

After failing to convince the Biden administration to ship NATO fighter jets to Ukraine, the military-industrial complex is now trying to coax the White House into sending unmanned fighter jets to counter Russia’s invasion. Kyiv reportedly met with the major defense contractor General Atomics about obtaining the “Hunter-Killer” MQ-9 Reaper drone, armed with Hellfire missiles, which the U.S. has infamously used in botched airstrikes that killed and maimed civilians in Afghanistan, Somalia, and other countries around the world. The company and Kyiv’s allies in Washington are appealing to policymakers to greenlight the export, despite the high risk of escalation that could turn the devastating war nuclear.

Take retired Air Force Lt. Gen. David Deptula, dean of the influential and General Atomics-funded Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, who penned an op-ed in Forbes advocating for the U.S. to give Ukraine Reapers in March, before Kyiv’s interest was publicly known. He blasted skeptics who voiced concern about offering Poland’s MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, saying they’re “being cowed by Putin,” the Russian president.

In a phone call with The Intercept, Deptula reiterated his hawkish stance, arguing concern about conflict escalation “is being fed by the Russians through a very sophisticated information operations campaign to deter U.S. and NATO actions to assist the Ukrainians. Anything’s fair up to, but not including, the use of NATO forces in the conduct of hostile operations against the Russians.”

“Approve this, US Govt.,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., tweeted last month when the Washington Post reported that Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S. met with General Atomics. Notorious for calling on the U.S. to enforce a dangerous no-fly zone over Ukraine, Kinzinger, along with Reps. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., and Chrissy Houlahan, D-Penn., also asked the Defense Department to report on how long it would take to train a Ukrainian pilot to fly the MQ-9. This week, senior fellows from the General Atomics-funded Hudson Institute wrote an op-ed in The Dispatch endorsing sending Ukraine Reapers as well. And General Atomics sends lobbyists to Washington specifically to influence the strict export policy that the U.S. has enforced to limit the global proliferation of such dangerous drones.

The White House has shown an increased willingness to give Ukraine weapons as the war in Ukraine has dragged on and U.S. aims shift toward seeing a “weakened” Russia. Initially, it was only willing to give shoulder-fired missiles; backpack-sized drones called Switchblades strapped with grenades; and encrypted communications equipment. More recently, the administration has greenlighted heavy artillery weapons, armored personnel carriers, and longer-flying experimental drones called Phoenix Ghosts.

. . . Hartung warned that giving Reapers to Ukraine in service of weakening Russia, as stated by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, can especially be dangerous.

“A policy of trying to weaken Russia risks pushing Putin into a corner and increasing the risks of escalation of the conflict to a direct U.S.-Russia war, with all the risks that entails, including the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons,” he said.

The chances of the Russian tyrant launching a nuclear strike are receding as it is likely people would refuse to carry out his order.

That’s according to expert and investigative journalist Christo Grozev, who suggests Putin is losing his grip on power.

He says leading officials are unlikely to obey Putin’s commands to launch nukes as they don’t trust he will still be in power in three months time.

‘I think that it is the informed elite within the security forces who understand that the war is lost,’ Grozev told Radio Liberty.

He said Putin’s inner circle understand the president would need a full mass mobilisation to win the war, but this would cause a ‘social explosion’ in Russia.

Some hardliners may pressure for use of nuclear or chemical weapons, Grozev warned.

But others will say ‘enough is enough’ and ‘it is better not to waste another 10,000 lives of our soldiers and officers’.

Grozev, lead Russia investigator for investigative journalist group Bellingcat, said one or more of the ‘five hands’ needed to launch Russia’s nukes could end up defying Putin.

‘And this refusal will be the trigger, most likely, a coup d’état, because after the refusal to comply with the order of the king, everything will go down very quickly,’ he added.

‘If Putin decides to give an order to use nuclear weapons, he must be sure that everyone along the chain will carry out this order.’

If one person does not comply, Grozev says this will be a ‘signal of insubordination’ which could lead to the ‘death of Putin’.

‘So until he is sure that everyone will comply, he will not give this order,’ he added.

It is known that defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the defence staff Valery Gerasimov would both need to sanction a nuclear strike.

During the war, Putin has made a point of being seen in public with an official carrying the nuclear briefcase.

Defence ministry flights for Russia’s elite to a supposed command and control bunker near Ufa – 725 miles east of Moscow – have reduced since earlier in the war, according to Grozev.

The journalist said senior figures from the FSB security agency and the GRU military intelligence organisation are preparing for life after Putin.

He said the ‘FSB elite’ knows exactly how many Russian troops have died in Ukraine and knows that the loved ones of the dead or missing ‘do not stop asking questions’.

‘They know that this situation will eventually get out of hand,’ Grozev added.

‘These are those parts of the security forces who know the dangers for the regime, and they themselves are now preparing their future.

‘Some of them are looking for an opportunity to take their families out of Russia, all are looking for ways to transfer the accumulated money (corruption money in many cases) into dollars and euros.

‘This is already a kind of betrayal by these people, because they do not follow the ideological orders of the Kremlin, but are preparing for an alternative reality.’

Russian State TV Discusses How to 'Destroy East and West Coasts of U.S.'

A Russian politician discussed what the country would need to do to destroy the east and west coasts of the U.S. in a clip that has gone viral on social media.

While speaking on Russian state TV, Aleksey Zhuravlyov insisted Russia had the military capability to destroy America's coasts and said that the U.S. was trying to "raise the stakes."

The video has also gone viral on Twitter.

While the Russian politician makes his claims in the clip, an English translation can be seen running along the bottom of the page.

Newsweek was able to independently verify that the words accompanying the video match what is being said.

This is a believable reason: Vladimir Putin Invaded Ukraine Over Control Of Their Oil And Gas Reserves

Vladimir Putin claimed he invaded Ukraine over eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. However, this video essay by RealLifeLore makes a convincing case that Russia did it for control of the country's natural resources.

Putin would NOT talk about this because his soldiers would want a cut of the money. Putin will not be increasing their wages by 1,000%, although he could if the Army does conquer Ukraine. All that petroleum and natural gas money is for Putin's bank account, not for the soldiers who make it possible by giving their lives for Putin to get richer and more powerful.

I meant to watch this last time you posted it - thanks. Caught the first 5 minutes so far - good stuff, high caliber. I'll definitely will check out more of this producer's videos. I'm looking forward to finding out how much oil Ukraine produces and why haven't they been known for producing an amount worth stealing (that I know of). And why they got rid of their nukes.

Customary international humanitarian laws and treaties — including the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their protocols — demand that the driving principle in war be military necessity, which mandates all combatants direct their actions toward legitimate military targets. The law requires a balance between a military mission and humanity. Combatants must not carry out attacks that are disproportionate, where the expected civilian harm is clearly excessive, according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, to the direct and concrete military advantage that would be anticipated. Combatants must consider distinction, that attacks are directed only toward lawful targets and people and are not applied indiscriminately. And they must not use weapons calculated to inflict unnecessary suffering.

“The Russians have violated every single one of those principles almost daily,” said Mike Newton, a Vanderbilt University law professor who frequently supports efforts to prosecute war crimes all over the world.

“The law of war is far more demanding than the rule of simple expediency and convenience,” Professor Newton said. “Just because I have a weapon doesn’t mean I can use it.”

A Russian Navy submarine armed with a strategic nuclear torpedo the size of a school bus was delivered to the Kremlin this week. (July 8, 2022 11:12 AM)

Poseidon, first revealed in 2015, is a nuclear strategic weapon that would have a range of thousands of miles and would “destroy important economic installations of the enemy in coastal areas and cause guaranteed devastating damage to the country’s territory by creating wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time,” according to a translation of a Russian presentation caught on camera by the BBC.

https://news.usni.org/2022/07/08/doomsday-submarine-armed-with-nuclear

The Poseidon "doomsday" device is designed to travel up to 5,000 nm at a speed of 50-100 knots, transit to a harbor or near-coastal area, and detonate a nuclear warhead. The immediate effects of the explosion would be extreme, but the real objective would be to coat wide swathes of the surrounding coastline with radioactive fallout - an enduring and difficult-to-remediate hazard of underwater nuclear detonations.

Commentators desperately cling to the hope that Putin is just one wild man, that around him are people who will eventually find the spine to overthrow him. Remarks were made recently by a representative of Rosneft, Russia’s largest state oil company. “You must have heard it,” Alyokhina says, with frustration, but no, I have not. “He promoted Adolf Hitler. He said that, of all the decisions in the west, the Anglo-Saxons are the most guilty people. The first nuclear bomb must be dropped on Great Britain. This is what we have, in our so-called news. They are speaking about nuclear bombs almost every day.”

Blinken accuses Russia of 'reckless, dangerous nuclear saber rattling'

(CNN)Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday called on Russia to live up to its nuclear arms control commitments, accusing Moscow of "reckless, dangerous nuclear saber rattling" as part of its war in Ukraine and warning of the negative impact the war will have on this month's conference to recommit to the importance of nuclear non-proliferation.

In remarks at the start of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference at the United Nations, the top US diplomat warned that the landmark agreement is "under increasing strain" due to not only the actions of Russia, but also of North Korea and Iran.

Officials have acknowledged the challenges that Russia's war in Ukraine will present at the review conference -- which is typically held every five years but had been delayed for two due to the coronavirus pandemic -- and the prospects of all parties agreeing to a consensus document at the conclusion of the month-long gathering.

In his remarks, Blinken noted that Russia had joined with the other NPT nuclear states -- the United States, United Kingdom, France, and China -- in a joint statement in January emphasizing the importance of avoiding nuclear war and arms races, but "the very next month, Russia launched a full scale invasion of Ukraine."

US unveils new sanctions targeting 'illicit' support for Iranian oil industry

"It's engaging in reckless, dangerous nuclear saber rattling, with its president warning that those supporting Ukraine self-defense 'risk consequences such as you have never seen in your entire history,'" Blinken said.

Unlike in January, only three of the NPT nuclear states -- the US, UK, and France -- released a joint statement Monday at the start of the conference, in which they called on Russia "to cease its irresponsible and dangerous nuclear rhetoric and behaviour, to uphold its international commitments, and to recommit -- in words and deeds -- to the principles enshrined in the recent Preventing Nuclear War and Avoiding Arms Races Leaders' statement," referencing the one released in January.

Blinken said Russia's war is in violation of the UN Charter, the rules-based international order, and the Budapest Memorandum -- the 1994 agreement under which Russia pledged to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and Kyiv agreed to forfeit its nuclear weapon arsenal.

"What message does this send to any country around the world that may think that it needs to have nuclear weapons to protect, to defend, to deter aggression against its sovereignty and independence? The worst possible message," he said. "And so it's directly relevant to what's going on here this month at the United Nations."

"Most recently, we saw Russia's aggression with its seizure of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest such plant in all of Europe," Blinken continued. "Russia is now using the plant as a military base to fire at Ukrainians, knowing that they can't and won't shoot back because they might accidentally strike a reactor or highly radioactive waste in storage."

"That brings the notion of having a human shield to an entirely different and horrific level," he said.

Blinken says he had 'frank' discussion with Russian foreign minister in first call since Ukraine war began

Blinken contrasted the actions by Moscow to those of the US, which he said has sought to avoid escalation "by forgoing previously scheduled ICBM tests and not raising the alert status of our nuclear forces in response to Russian saber rattling."

"There is no place in our world, no place in our world for nuclear deterrence based on coercion, intimidation, or blackmail," he said.

Blinken also called out North Korea for its nuclear provocations, noting that "as we gather today, Pyongyang is preparing to conduct its seventh nuclear test."

The top US diplomat said "Iran remains on a path of nuclear escalation."

"Although it publicly claims to favor return to mutual compliance with the JCPOA, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, since March Iran has been either unwilling or unable to accept the deal to achieve precisely that goal," Blinken said. "Getting back to the JCPOA remains the best outcome for the United States, for Iran, for the world."

There is a simple strategy where humanity has an adequate chance of all surviving, but what most people prefer as a solution -- the intuitively obvious strategy of random decision making -- guarantees we all die. Here is a little video where we are all in prison together and the right mathematical strategy means we all escape our lethal fate:

Two days earlier, Vladimir Putin put Russian nuclear forces on "special combat readiness," in other words, high alert.

Minutes before the Ukraine invasion, the Russian president warned of "consequences that you have never experienced in your history."

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a stark nuclear warning to the West on Saturday as relations remain tense amid the ongoing Ukraine war.

Medvedev accused the West of wanting to take "advantage of the military conflict in Ukraine" to "eliminate Russia from the political field."

"Those are the dirty dreams of the Anglo-Saxon perverts, who go to sleep with a secret thought about the breakup of our state, thinking about how to shred us into pieces, cut us into small bits." Medvedev wrote in the translated post. "Such attempts are very dangerous and mustn't be underestimated. Those dreamers ignore a simple axiom: a forceful disintegration of a nuclear power is always a chess game with death, in which it's known precisely when the check and mate comes: doomsday for mankind."

Other Russian politicians have also left the door open on Russia's use of nuclear weapons amid the war, though Putin has typically used more measured rhetoric himself. In March, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Russia would use nuclear weapons if leaders felt like their country was facing an "existential threat."

Russian-state television, which typically pushes Putin's propaganda, however, has made more forceful threats of nuclear warfare. In April, television personality Vladimir Solovyov warned of a nuclear war that only "mutants" would survive if member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) continued providing Ukraine weapons.

The nuclear threat might change the mood in Russia itself, stoking widespread fear
by Peter Pomerantsev

Putin’s propaganda glories in devastation but he is sowing the seeds of self-destruction

Russian state propaganda drips with the pathos of martyrdom. Russians are meant to love the pain of proving how tough they are, surviving everything from the Gulag to the extreme weather, as compared with the effete west. The propaganda taps incessantly into the myth of the Second World War, in which Russians are described as unique among nations in their readiness to sacrifice themselves for a greater cause. On the anniversary of that war, the state organises marches where people carry placards of dead veterans, “the immortal regiment”: death in war brings immortality in the heaven of state propaganda. There’s a suicidal bravura, a “let’s destroy the whole world” implication in the popular catchphrase “What’s the point of the world if there’s no place for Russia in it?”. Putin’s nuclear threats are snarled with relish, as if sadistically summoning the Gods of Total Destruction.

The Russian myth of martyrdom and resilience is suspect. Ukrainians have a genuine tradition of suffering for the cause of national liberation – and success through sacrifice. For centuries, Ukrainian poets and rebels proved themselves ready to bear unjust imprisonment, executions and genocide to fight for their national and linguistic rights. Many of Ukraine’s heroes, such as the poets Taras Shevchenko and Vasyl Stus, suffered Russian prisons and tortures, and their underlying spirit of resilience is being proved on the battlefield.

Russians have indeed been killed en masse, most often by their own state, but, unlike Ukrainians, they do not celebrate their own dissidents. These are hated and damned in state propaganda and by the public at large. Real courage is derided. Instead, mass oppression has resulted in a society that celebrates passive conformism. Bravura is celebrated on the screen, but as a way to compensate for the way society is actually cowed. You are crushed by the state and then compensated with patriotic heroics on television and sadism towards the weakest in your own society and others (in this case, Ukraine).

Putin’s propaganda is geared to demobilisation: sit on the couch, feel strong by watching propaganda and let the Kremlin run things. Beneath the rhetoric of self-sacrifice, Putin’s propaganda has traditionally allowed for self-interest or, at least, self-preservation. You go to war spouting patriotic rhetoric, but really you are in it because it allows for loot. You enjoy the highs of patriotic rhetoric at home, but really your interest is in being allowed to pursue corruption, great and small. Putin’s trick is to dress self-interest in patriotic propaganda. Now those two things are splitting. Going to the front just means pointless death. It’s now clear the “partial” mobilisation is not partial at all; people are being grabbed on the streets and packed off to war. On social media, the sentiment towards mobilisation is highly negative. In polling, even the most pro-Putin Russians are against it. The war in Ukraine was meant to be a movie, not a personal sacrifice.

Putin’s threat of nuclear war may backfire, too. It’s meant to intimidate the west and Ukraine but it can upset his own people more. If there’s one thing Russians fear more than Putin, it’s nuclear war – and now he’s the one bringing it closer. For both the elite and the “ordinary” Russians who I’ve spoken to recently, the calculation is about whether the risk of going against Putin is bigger than the risk of sticking with him. So far, rebelling has seemed the bigger risk; does the nuclear topic change that?

Losing public opinion in Russia is not the same as in a democracy. It doesn’t necessarily lead to protests, let alone losing non-existent elections. But being able to show you can control public opinion, through fear and propaganda, is one of the emblems of tsardom. Putin has lost control of the military situation. Losing control of propaganda will show that beneath the shiny fascist boots are feet of clay.

Nobody cares about your fear porn.

Why don't you just go outside without your mask today if you want to terrorize yourself.

Every day you give a short memory dump proving the inadequacy of your operating system. There are NAN errors, overflows, unhandled interrupts. You are the epitome of the results from bad-to-grotesquely-incompetent system programmers (be it family, acquaintances, or friends) using sloppy algorithms and rules-of-thumb to train or guide human shaped robots such as yourself. Is your simulacrum fooling other people that you are a real person, not a gadget that smokes tobacco, poops and falls into and out of addictive behaviors such as hoarding and viewing screens (computer, TV, movie)? Trump will be fine, declares the robot 6ix. I could get the robot 6ix to archive this comment, since it has a small repertoire of programmed responses. Trumptards are uncomplicated devices and Trump knows well how to push the Trumptards' buttons.

In its aggressive anti-Russian policy, the West has crossed every line. We constantly hear threats against our country, our people. Some irresponsible politicians in the West not only talk about plans to organize the supply of long-range offensive weapons to Ukraine – systems that will allow strikes against the Crimea and other regions of Russia.

Such terrorist strikes, including with the use of Western weapons, are already being carried out on the border settlements of the Belgorod and Kursk regions. In real time, using modern systems, aircraft, ships, satellites, strategic drones, NATO carries out reconnaissance throughout southern Russia.

In Washington, London, Brussels, they are directly pushing Kyiv to transfer military operations to our territory. No longer hiding, they say that Russia should be defeated by all means on the battlefield, followed by the deprivation of political, economic, cultural, in general, any sovereignty, with the complete plunder of our country.

Nuclear blackmail was also launched. We are talking not only about the shelling of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is encouraged by the West, which threatens a nuclear catastrophe, but also about the statements of some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO states about the possibility and admissibility of using weapons of mass destruction against Russia – nuclear weapons.

For those who allow themselves to make such statements about Russia, I would like to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and for some components more modern than those of the NATO countries.

And if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. It’s not a bluff.
