Whatever indeed: Trump’s DOJ asks the Supreme Court to strip health care from 23 million people during a pandemic

The Trump administration filed a brief in the Supreme Court late Thursday night claiming that the “entire Affordable Care Act must fall” in the middle of a pandemic that has killed more than 120,000 people in the United States and sickened more than 2 million.

If the administration succeeds in its effort to kill Obamacare, approximately 23 million Americans will lose health coverage — and that number is likely to grow as the economic downturn triggered by the coronavirus pandemic pushes more and more Americans out of work.

The plaintiffs in this case include a bloc of red states and two individuals. The United States is actually the defendant in this lawsuit, but the Trump administration refused to defend the Affordable Care Act and instead cast its lot with the plaintiffs. The Court plans to hear this case in the fall.

This case, which is now known as California v. Texas, involves Congress’s decision to repeal Obamacare’s individual mandate.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says he would "settle" for a Covid-19 vaccine that's 70% to 75% effective, but that this incomplete protection, coupled with the fact that many Americans say they won't get a coronavirus vaccine, makes it "unlikely" that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak.

With government support, three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.

"The best we've ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective," said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "That would be wonderful if we get there. I don't think we will. I would settle for a 70, 75% effective vaccine."

A CNN poll last month found one-third of Americans said they would not try to get vaccinated against Covid, even if the vaccine is widely available and low cost.

In an interview Friday, CNN asked Fauci whether a vaccine with 70% to 75% efficacy taken by only two-thirds of the population would provide herd immunity to the coronavirus.

"No -- unlikely," he answered.

Herd immunity is when a sufficient proportion of a population is immune to an infectious disease, either through prior illness or vaccination, so that spread from person to person unlikely.

Fauci noted that "there is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country -- an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking."

He said given the power of the anti-vaccine movement, "we have a lot of work to do" to educate people on the truth about vaccines.

"It's not going to be easy," he said. "Anyone who thinks it will be easy is not facing reality. It's going to be very difficult."

The reason why Trump won't bother to energetically/competently handle Covid-19 is because, just like you, he keeps thinking of it as the flu, the "Kung Flu" in his not clever phrase. China, which take Covid-19 seriously, will keep its death toll lower than the Texas death toll. Texas shifts back and forth between doing nothing as Trump advises and following what epidemiologists advise:

1) As coronavirus spikes in US, China locks down 400,000 people ... over 18 cases

DO NOT bring China into this.

China lies. Everybody knows that China lies.

We will never know how many people in China have it or how many people died.

Johns Hopkins and any other trackers should just completely throw any China stats out and not even report their numbers.

Also, in China, they will force you to get vaccinated at gunpoint.

The guy who made this comic is deeply misinformed. Those types of masks don't keep the virus OUT - you need a genuine respirator for that. Instead, those masks keep (most) of the virus IN, so you don't spread your germs to anyone else.

Spreading your germs would be helpful to avoid if you were, say, a surgeon or a nurse, within literal spitting distance of a person's innards as they lay cut open on an operating table.

About 50% of Americans get vaccinated for flu.
www.cdc.gov/flu/season/faq-flu-season-2019-2020.htm

About 50% of Americans say they will get vaccinated for Covid-19.
www.popsci.com/story/health/covid-19-vaccine-poll/

Those vaccination rates says something about 50% of Americans. What it says depends on who you are, but for me it says the 50% who won't get vaccinated for Covid-19 are mentally deranged, which matches up with what I see every day in America.

If half the population is not doing what should be done, that would kind of explain why America has been seriously malfunctioning for hundreds of years, but it would also explain why, for at least the other half of Americans, the people are functioning at a high level.

How White House Coronavirus Response Went Wrong

Imagine if the National Transportation Safety Board, which usually handles only airplane crashes, investigated America’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Consider a thought experiment: What if the NTSB were brought in to look at the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic? What would its investigation conclude? I’ll jump to the answer before laying out the background: This was a journey straight into a mountainside, with countless missed opportunities to turn away. A system was in place to save lives and contain disaster, but the people in charge of the system could not be bothered to avoid the doomed course.

The modern aviation system works. From the dawn of commercial aviation through the 1990s, 1,000 to 2,000 people would typically die each year in airline crashes. Today, the worldwide total is usually about one-10th that level. Last year, before the pandemic began, more than 25,000 commercial-airline flights took off each day from airports in the United States. Every one of them landed safely.

In these two fundamentally similar undertakings totally controlled by government — managing the skies, containing disease outbreaks — the United States has set a global example of success in one and of failure in the other. It has among the fewest aviation-related fatalities in the world, despite having the largest number of flights. But with respect to the coronavirus pandemic, it has suffered by far the largest number of fatalities, about one-quarter of the global total, despite having less than one-20th of the world’s population.

In late April the U.S. death toll had climbed above 60,000, exceeding the number of Americans killed in the Vietnam War. By late June, the total surpassed 120,000 — more than all American military deaths during World War I. If Trump had just been paying attention, he would have asked, ‘What do I do first?’ We wouldn’t have passed the threshold of casualties in previous wars. It is a catastrophic failure.

A National Mask Mandate Could Save The U.S. Economy $1 Trillion per year

Forbes reports on a new analysis from Goldman Sachs:

Goldman’s analysts found that wearing face coverings has a significant impact on coronavirus outcomes, and they suggest that a federal mask mandate would “meaningfully” increase mask usage across the country, especially in states like Florida and Texas, where masks are not currently required. The researchers estimate that a national mandate would increase the portion of people who wearing masks by 15%, and cut the daily growth of new cases by between 0.6% and 1%.

Reducing the spread of the virus through mask-wearing, the analysts found, could be a substitute for strict lockdown measures that would otherwise shave 5%—or $1 trillion—off the U.S. GDP.

More at www.forbes.com/sites/sarahhansen/2020/06/30/a-national-mask-mandate-co
uld-save-the-us-economy-1-trillion-goldman-sachs-says/#2754a3c856f1

In short, a federal mask mandate would likely make a difference of $1 trillion in GDP. And it would be more convenient too! Which would you rather have, another business lockdown or a mask mandate?

This is yet another indication that if we want to save the economy, we have to crush the virus. It’s not enough to reopen and declare Mission Accomplished. People simply won’t go back to their normal habits until it’s safe, and mask usage is a key component of that.

The hell of it is that this is the one thing that Donald Trump will never, ever agree to. Trump is literally incapable of admitting error, even implicitly, which means he will never go on TV and declare that everyone should wear a mask. Quite the contrary: he’s more likely to double down and declare that mask wearing is ridiculous and useless. He’s probably the only person in America who could effectively deliver the mask message to the people who really need it, but he refuses to do so. As for Nationalized Health Care, Universal Health Care, Government Health Care, etc - this is what the vaunted Italian system is, and they have 1/3 o the ICU beds per capita as the U.S. does. Their Death Panels are overwhelmed with decisions of who to kill and who to treat. Their individual hospitals are overwhelmed with death decisions of who to kill or let die, every floor of these hospitals is overwhelmed with who to kill, and each doctor or specialist is overwhelmed with decisions of who to kill - socialized Health Care is the Utopian model. They also mentioned that some specific hospitals in their nationalized system (like Lombardy) are even more better funded and equipped than other hospitals in the same system - where everything is equal.

Here we have a post from 16 March. In it, kiki includes a quote of a post of mine from 16 March, which was the last day I was able to post until this week. I had intended to reply right away, but could not.

I think kiki had every reason and expectation to reply to me in this way.

I must apologize for my post and it's contents. I had not realized it was inaccurate. I had truly thought that I had viewed posts from kiki which reflected the things I said, and I thought I was merely pointing them out.

I had thought as well that kiki did believe the concept which I had posted, and had not recalled any posts of hers which conflicted with what I had thought about her views.
I will assume that what she has stated in her reply is factual, and accurate.

I am sorry for the confusion. As well as my long overdue reply.

The best I'm going to find about Ted posting that Trump was racist for suggesting a travel ban was the same thing I posted to Second on March 26th.

We all know you called him a racist for it Ted. You've got 200 threads with a bunch of bullshit that's hard to stift through. But if the Legacy Media "reported" bad things about Trump, you posted the link and some dumb cartoons about it.

Who Says It’s Not Safe to Travel to China?

Sadly, one doesn’t have to look far for evidence of these top-down decisions morphing into outright racism within the general population, a trend that has a long history in the narrative of outbreaks such as this one.

Coronavirus shares something in common with other kinds of civil disruption, natural disasters or emergencies that affect localized travel industries: Its destructive power lies not in the actual risk but in the perception of that risk. Numerous experts have said that the majority of people who contract coronavirus will experience it as a respiratory infection they will fully recover from. But the extreme reactions — the canceling of flights, closing of borders and level-four travel warnings — seem more appropriate for something much worse.

With the rhetoric surrounding coronavirus, however, it appears the astonishing growth of the Chinese travel market in the past 15 years did little to rid the industry of the impulse to treat Chinese travelers as “others” in the face of doubt and uncertainty. Canceling flights, cruises and locking down borders when it’s not advised by international agencies will be not only an act of economic self-harm but also a wasted opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the past.

Well, Rosie. That article hasn't aged well, has it?

Have we learned anything from mistakes of the very recent past yet?

I'll bet you haven't. I'll bet when the COVID thing blows over you'll be at the front lines of the Legacy Media to open our boarders wide to everybody else and call anybody who doesn't agree with you a Nationalist, as if that is a bad word or something.

Maybe if instead of listening to the Twitter Mob and the Legacy Media lefty shills and they did what I said all along and shut down all flights when I said to, including for US citizens who were abroad (which JSF said I was being un-American by suggesting), we wouldn't have it spreading in the US now and terrorizing people like Kiki and Sigs.

I thought this was an interesting post by Second from February 24th while looking for Ted's comments on Trump's racist travel bans that CNN and Vox and MSNBC and MotherJones among others were all calling racist before The Coomph became a thing here.

Especially funny now since Second wants an authoritarian mandate requiring everyone to wear a mask outside.

That was Feb 24th. Look on that date on this graph:

Who knew that Trump would handle Covid-19 same as he does everything else, lie than lie some more? Somebody did, but it wasn't me: "The Covid-19 story, told in lies."
www.nytimes.com/2020/06/30/opinion/world-war-c.html

Thinking about the course of the Covid-19 pandemic in America, I found myself remembering Sam Smith’s history of the march to war in Iraq, told entirely in official lies. So here’s a modest attempt to do the same for the coronavirus, with statements from officials and right-wing media. I’ve grouped the statements by topic, and used chronological order within each topic.

The course of the pandemic

We think we have it very well under control. We have contained this. I won’t say airtight, but pretty close to airtight. We have done a good job in the United States.

It’s going to disappear. One day, like a miracle, it’s going to disappear. At worst — worst case scenario — it could be the flu.

We’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it.

It’s going to go away … when you look at the kind of numbers that you’re seeing coming out of other countries, it’s pretty amazing when you think of it.

This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.

It looks like we’ll be at about a 60,000 mark, which is 40,000 less than the lowest number thought of.

Minimal numbers were going to be 100,000 people. And we’re going to be, hopefully, far below that.

So we have between 100 and 200,000, and we altogether have done a very good job.

“America is the global exception right now,” says Gregorio Millett, director of public policy at amFAR. “Just look at the EU or New Zealand or countries across Asia. These places have vastly different cultures, different geographies, different institutions, different everything — but the one thing they have in common is that everyone is following public health measures. And they’ve all kept this virus at bay. Our leaders decided to politicize a scientific issue and as a result, our curve looks different than the rest of the world’s. www.vox.com/2020/7/1/21308809/covid-19-coronavirus-2020-trump-election

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (Republican) lashed out at Dr. Anthony Fauci on Fox News, saying the nation’s top infectious disease expert has “been wrong every time on every issue.”

“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” Patrick said during an interview Tuesday night. “The only thing I’m skipping over is listening to him.”

Patrick was upset after hearing Fauci testify at a U.S. Senate hearing in which he said that more than 50 percent of the new infections in the U.S. are in Texas, Florida, California and Arizona.

Fauci didn’t directly criticize Texas’s reopening but said state officials may have been “going too quickly and skipping over some of the checkpoints” as they lifted stay-home orders.

Patrick said he doesn’t need Fauci’s advice, declaring, “We haven’t skipped over anything.”

Patrick’s remarks came on a day Texas reported 7,700 new infections of COVID-19.

See? No problem! COVID-19 is CURED everywhere!

No ... not really. Not anymore than N Italy, or the care homes of GB or Sweden, or the particular hard-hit regions of Spain.

To show cause and effect, you need to show that deaths in nursing homes in NYC went up only AFTER COVID-19 patients were moved in, and ONLY in those nursing homes that had COIVD-19 patients. And you need to show that those patients were still positive for COVID-19. And to be really persnickety, you need to demonstrate that the particular strain of COVID-19 that killed nursing home patients AFTER new, positive-testing COVID-19 patients were moved in was identical to the strain of those new, positive-testing COVID-19 patients.

What we know - or rather, what * I * know since I follow the facts - is that however named (nursing homes, care homes, long-term facilities, and just plain family residences etc), and wherever they occur on the globe - Washington State, N Italy, Sweden, or NYC - the very elderly and those with multiple medical pre-existing conditions - are most at risk of death compared to anyone else.

And, btw there is no cause-and-effect. 'Nursing home' patients in NYC and coupled populations were dying on the front-lines of infection, before anyone else.
