Trump's likeliest bailout plan. I mean, if they want it bad enough, make them scrape in the street for it...

Jokers aside, what solutions have you heard of for dealing with the financial aspect of the "little people" and coronavirus?

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/andrew-yang-co

I would do a flat $1,000 per individual adult and then $500 per child under 18 and do it for three months. I like the earned income tax credit, but it doesn’t capture everyone that it would need to, and you don’t have much time in this kind of crisis. The downsides of being under-inclusive are high, so you’d want to err on the side of completeness if you can. Just say, ‘Look, if you’re an adult you get $1,000, and for every child you get an additional $500.’ That would secure more people’s ability to weather this storm.
.....
Let’s say that I’m a waitress and the restaurant I work in closes because of COVID-19. What does having zero interest loans do for me? Am I supposed to go to a bank and borrow money? That doesn’t really help me. That’s true for businesses and workers and most parts of the economy. If I’m a small business, I’m also not going to run out and get a loan in all likelihood. The people that have access to capital are businesses that typically have millions or tens of millions of dollars of revenue or up. The average worker is not going to be touched by a drop in interest rates and the average small business probably won’t be either.

Twelve years ago, culpable banking and finance institutions that should have been reduced in size, power and wealth were given billions in taxpayer-funded black checks, while millions of innocent people lost their retirement savings and homes. Famously, only one top banker responsible for the crisis went to prison.

There are no clear villains in the current crisis, and we can’t imprison a virus to make an example of it. But we can make sure that ordinary people are the beneficiaries of government resources — which may be strained in ways not seen in recent memory — instead of privately held industries and their investors who have spent the last decade hiding profits to avoid taxes and inflating their share prices with stock buybacks.

Be helpful on this one or shut up.

That's fine for me, we got our tax return and aren't going to starve any time soon. Hubbs is still working for the moment, although that could change overnight, too.

One of the reasons we always pay in the max so we can get a large lump sum back so we can actually do something with it. Especially grateful for that this year...

But there are people being affected by this that will be completely devastated by it, and something will need to be done about it by the end of March, ideally.

There are students who don't have two nickles, people with health issues losing coverage and thus healthcare, people that just moved, or live in high rent areas....lots of people who NEED A BAILOUT.

So I was talking to my old man last night and he told me they were considering a temporary UBI with several figures out there. Before posting here about it, I wanted to at least look online and see what I could find first.

https://www.marketplace.org/2020/03/17/covid-19-relief-direct-checks-a
nd-a-90-day-tax-extension
/

https://www.fastcompany.com/90478515/government-looking-at-sending-che
cks-to-americans-in-the-next-two-weeks-for-covid-19-relief

I don't get the feeling that anybody who remains on these boards were anywhere close to the end of their rope, or would immediately be in financial turmoil if they had a temporary suspension of work due to this, but please do yourselves the favor of not counting on any money until checks are cut and cashed.

The stories I'm seeing are for $1,000 per adult citizen who makes under $1 Million per year, as well as a 90 day tax extension. (Don't delay your taxes if you're owed money, obviously, which I would think most of us were).

The other figure my old man said they were talking about was $4,500 per adult. I did not see that figure online this morning. I doubt very much that would ever happen in one lump sum anyhow, and this may have been mentioned as budgeting and planning to give up to that much per person over time if this all persists months down the line.

I would also advise, if possible, to anyone who it is applicable to continue to file unemployment claims even if your money is exhausted. If unemployment rates go low for an extended period of time there might also be an extension of those benefits at some point.

I know you can continue to file in Illinois and Wisconsin after benefits have expired, but you cannot do this in Indiana. I think JO is the only person currently on unemployment, but is a long way off from those benefits expiring. (You did file for that, right JO???? Now's the time to do it for sure if you haven't).

$4500 - no way. I wish but it's just too much.

$1000 - yes way. And no loans - that's just profiteering, gouging people when they're down.

Plus - I would add some kind of $ for rent or to renters to defray costs. If you're going to tell people to shelter in place, then they gotta have a home to shelter in place in.

We have the money - just write the damn checks. Screw Lydnsey Graham. "I don't want to send people money. I want to get their jobs back so they can earn it." How the flip you going to do that? Cure the virus yourself?

IF WE DON'T SEND CASH and this goes past a month, we will start to see a spike in some serious crime. People will get desperate if they're locked up without the hope for income. More people going outside, contacting others for "work"... it'll get ugly.

The money haz been broken for a long time. No connection to productiv work.

The current situation iz going to get worse and with Trump on the job its likely to get way worse.

Remember that Bush did a 'throw money at them' stimulous. It worked short term kuz we needed stuff, but the crash happened eventually anyway.

Well... I think whatever the amount is, it's got to be the same for everyone. If you start doing that for renters, then what about people with mortgages? At some point you're extending it for everybody except for those who were the best with their money during the good times and penalizing them for making better decisions. Something which will most effect the elderly in the country.

We already have a lot of assistance in place for people who need more, and with the fortunate situation of it being tax time, there are a lot of people who are going to be getting large EIC checks for the amount of children in the homes. As long as programs like Food Stamps, SSI, SSDI, unemployment and TANF aren't suspended or facing any huge glitches, everybody should be able to make due for a month on $1,000 if they really evaluate their situation and pare down to necessities.

All I'm saying is that I see people every day who are "less fortunate" than I am who wear nicer clothes, drive nicer cars and have bluetooth devices in their ears.

I think you hit the nail on the head right here. With the cancelling of sports and the closing of movie theaters, bars, restaurants and such, you're already dealing with a situation where people in general have a lot more free time on their hands. Sure, they might not be spending as much on entertainment or gas for a while, but they're going to get bored and ancy. Idle hands, and all of that.

Mixing boredom along with not enough money in the hands of bored people with not enough money to put food on the table, or a table to eat at is a scenario that would get really ugly, really fast.

Something I wish the Government and Legacy Media would do right now is come up with a list of DO'S AND DONT'S for everyone who isn't a "prepper" or at least haven't lived with that mentality at some point in their life before this.

The panic buying is understandable, but by just looking at the grocery store this morning, people are buying all the wrong things. This is the second time in a week I've gone to buy milk and there wasn't any on the shelf even in the morning right when the store opened. If you want bread, you're out of luck. The frozen food section even was wiped out...

But there are a ton of canned goods still there. Jars of peanuts. Hell... even beef jerky.

Things that have a quick expiration date are all gone right now. Nobody's been able to buy paper towels and toilet paper for a week.

You've got people who are going to feel really sill when they're throwing out hundreds or even thousands of dollars of parishable goods when they expire, and who are loaded up now with 3-5 years worth of toiletries that they aren't going to need in the short term because the end of the world isn't coming and supply of that kind of stuff will catch up with demand in a week or two.

These are the types of things they really should be teaching kids about in school along with saving for the future. But since they haven't been teaching these good habits for decades now, I think it's time that a good list of DO'S AND DONT'S be put together on an official website and that it be highly advertised on all of the Media outlets.

Just my 2 cents.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Oh... I would add that it is Census time. It probably varies state to state, but if you haven't already gotten a notice, you likely will very soon.

It's easy, and it takes no more than 5 to 10 minutes to complete it.

I would highly advise people to do this as quickly as possible. Although I've heard no such thing yet, I wouldn't be surprised if any temporary UBI benefits are held for "ransom" until you do. (If I were in charge of such things, that's exactly what I would do right now).

But be safe, and make sure that you're actually filling out any info at a legitimate website. There are likely to be a literal TON of scams regarding any Census stuff and any and all financial things in the near future.

Don't ever even consider filling out any information for the Census or other Government stuff if the web address doesn't end in ".gov".

If anybody is unsure of something and would like help verifying that something is legit or not, please feel free to let me know and I'll do what I can to assist.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

You're right. If we start down the path of trying to make it fit everyone just right for their situation (whether for rent or "xyz") then there will be more anger and finger pointing and hostility.

So it's easy: same for everyone and do it NOW. Glad we could solve this today. :)

I think the most important question asked is this:

Quote:

Do you have to sign up for the payments? Is there a form? How will the government know where to send the money? What if I've recently moved?

These are all important and — for now — unanswered questions. The federal government would have addresses for people who paid taxes, earned income or received government payments last year. But those could be out of date, especially for renters or people without stable residences, who are likely in most need of financial help during the crisis.

It's also unclear whether any final package would involve traditional checks mailed to Americans or whether direct deposits into bank accounts would be an option.

I can't stress enough how important it is that you fill out your Census ASAP if this payment is at all important to you right now. I'm kind of shocked that they're still not saying that yet.

The Census alone will not have all the vital information as they do not ask for your SS# or direct deposit there, but they do ask for the names and ages of the people who reside in your home/apartment.

The quickest way to get this into people's hands would be to cross verify Census information with everyone's latest taxes (so do those too ASAP, if you're owed money of course). Your taxes have the SS# as well as your direct deposit information, or your mailing address if you don't do direct deposit.

This might not at all be the way they go about doing it in the end, but if they do go this route, you're only holding up the amount of time it takes to get you the relief money if you haven't done these two things.

It's probably not as critical if you haven't moved, haven't changed jobs, or haven't had any change in the people who live in your house and all of the information from last year's taxes more or less reflect your current situation.

But seriously, just in case they decide to hold any funds hostage until you do the Census, just take 5 minutes out of your day and fill it out now.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

A bit of new info...

A bill still hasn't passed. Time is ticking for them to pass something if they're going to make the deadline they told everybody they were going to send the check out. It failed last night, but will be voted on again tomorrow. I'm going to keep politics out of it here, so you can read the article and see the ridiculousness for yourself if you want to.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/top-democrats-say-they-re-no
t-yet-ready-sign-coronavirus-n1166021

Not sure what's more important though. Voting on this in time to cut those checks before the deadline, or before half or more of Congress is self-quarantining and unable to vote without being present. It appears that Rand Paul tested positive for it, and everybody was in the room with the guy.

(hmmmm.... isn't it strange that it's a guy who everyone knows his name? It could have literally been one of hundreds of other individuals who most Americans had never heard of before).

Anyhow...

Numbers posted in the article seem to be as follows:

$1,200 per adult that makes less than $75,000/year, phasing out until $0 at $99,000/year income.

$500 additional per child.

$600 per adult who doesn't have income and income tax, based off of income tax for 2018 (that was filled out and sent in during 2019).

Bernie wants to give flat $2,000 per person every month.

Other Democrats want to give $2,000 per person quarterly, diminishing based off of economic factors as it ramps down.

The plan is supposed to up Unemployment Benefits as well as Unemployment Eligibility.

(Again, JO, I hope you already filed for this, but if you haven't do it now... You're going to be on a waiting list already at this point, and it's only going to get longer).

My state currently has no info about it, but that's expected. Until I read this article today I had never heard anybody talking about this possibility although I had considered they might be doing it because of how many people will be unemployed compared to extensions that have been given out in the past.

They're not going to even mention the words Unemployment Extension here unless it actually happens. I know at this point that nobody here needs that, but if there is an extension I will be filing for it and I'll let you know if it still applies to somebody who exhausted their benefits prior, if they pay it back retroactively or start you anew, and how many hoops you need to jump through. Maybe that info could help somebody you know.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I think people might think I'm bullshitting when I say I don't watch the Legacy Media. If they've been talking about it on Fox, I wouldn't have heard it there either. Outside of watching COVID numbers and the bailout proposals, I haven't listened to pretty much anything else the last week.

I wouldn't have even known Rand Paul got it if it wasn't in that article.

And then Obama did another "throw money at them" stimulous, and ... it worked! And the Trump did ANOTHER "throw money at them" stimulous, and that worked too! Until about three weeks ago, that is.

The money situation here is so fucked, there's no way to reverse it. Trump would have to eliminate the Fed, take over the banks, and start lending government money for productive investments, like ... oh, say, respirator manufacturing and suchlike. The banks will never stand for that.

All we can do is keep going forward until we head over a cliff. It sucks.

It looks like Trump has a Hobson's choice in front of him, and has decided to pick BOTH bad options!

Someone pointed out to him that our teetering tower of debt (personal, corporate, government, and especially financial) simpy CANNOT withstand a moment's pause in the churning, so he he's decided on The Everything Bailout. Boeing, which deserves to go belly up for its bad management, is asking for a bailout. Banks, hedge funds ... every overleveraged malinvestment is going to that great trash can in the sky ... The Fed balance sheet. Helicopter money for corporations and helicopter money for financiers and (a little) helicopter money for the people.

But knowing that it will all come crashing down, Trump in his infinite wisdom has ALSO decided that the lockdown is only going to last two weeks.

Jeez, what a douche.

The reason why we can't withstand a crisis has been in the works for decades ... NOT TRUMP'S FAULT, NOT THE REPUBICAN'S FAULT ALONE ... offshoring our jobs to Mexico and China (Thank you Bush1, Bill, Bush2, Obama) .... the ever-increasing reliance on "financialism" (ie debt and speculation) to drive our economy. (Same list of thank-yous, plus a special thank you to Trump for relying on the stock market for his re-election chances and goosing The Fed to blow the biggest Everything Bubble yet.)

JO posted that money is broken, there is no longer any connection to productive work, and - for the USA - he is 100% correct. TPTB over the decades have made it less and less possible to earn a decent living working a meaningful job, so what we have left is "benefits", McJobs, the "gig economy", and un/underemployment.

In one fell swoop, COVID-19 made it IMPOSSIBLE to earn a living requiring any sort of collective effort ... which is anything physical ... so now we have an economy balanced on this teetering tower of debt, where NO ENTITY has savings.

"Here lies a fallen god,
His fall was not a small one.
We did but build his pedestal,
A narrow and a tall one"

Not posting about Trump, but about our economy in general.

It's not lying.

Anybody who gets a cold and thinks they're dying is an idiot.

I'm in great overall health, outside of a few sniffles. I might very well have COVID-19 right now and barely be feeling any effects from it.

I'll ask you again, why should I be scared?

My life isn't any different right now than it was 3 weeks ago, and I know it's extremely different for you right now, even if just by proxy through people you live with and care about in addition to all your panicking.

WISHIMAY

Well, the Senate passed it. Waitin' on da House now. Mebbe Friday, they say.

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/paulmcleod/senate-coronavirus-bil
l-pass-checks-americans

A tax credit of up to $10,000 for wages paid by businesses hit hard by the coronavirus, to incentivize keeping staff on the payroll.

More than $3 billion in emergency funding for child care.

Funding for states to immediately begin paying out unemployment benefits when someone is laid off.

Allowing employers (but not employees) to defer paying their share of social security tax on wages. That tax would have to be paid over the next two years.

A series of measures that expand telehealth services.

$100 billion for hospitals and health care providers.

A $150 billion relief fund for the states.

$16 billion to acquire ventilators and other medical equipment.

$4 billion for homeless assistance (though SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as food stamps, was not expanded in the bill).

Suspected details of the bill, but not known for sure..

Individuals who earn $75,000 or less would get direct payments of $1,200 each. Married couples with household income of up to $150,000 would receive $2,400 and an additional $500 per each child.

I'm wondering who voted against it.

It was suspected this morning that it would be a unanimous vote, and that if it was it wouldn't need to go to the house.

Now it won't be voted on in the house until Friday... so another two days lost because of the hold outs. I haven't heard that there was any doubt it would pass the house and Trump already said he'd sign it, so it's just a formality at this point.

Pretty safe to assume it was some Democrats who voted against it. If it were Republicans you know that they would be naming them, but the new stories not only don't mention who voted against it but don't even bring up the fact that a unanimous vote would bypass the house anymore.

EDIT:

Nope.

It was "unanimous", but 4 Senators were not present due to self quarantine. I wonder if the earlier reports stating that this would bypass needing a house vote were just fake news, or if the fact that 4 of them didn't vote was the culprit.

Anybody have any idea who the 4 were? I think I read that Mitt Romney was hiding out.

Hey JO!

Seriously, buddy. File that unemployment.

https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions
-answers.html
(I pasted the entire part about Unemployment below)

I'm not sure how it will be done in Illinois yet, but I'm sure I'm going to be learning. My buddy asked me for help this weekend for his fiancee who is a bartender, and although I know my old man doesn't need help my step-mom is out of work now too, so I'm going to hear it from him too I'm sure. If you need any assistance, I can help you out with it.

Before the virus, Illinois had 26 weeks (1/2 year) at 47% of your previous average pay. (I'm sure this was calculated on something like the average of the first 4 of the last 5 quarters you worked there... but, even if you didn't work long enough to qualify under normal circumstances, the article below says that is being waived now and you would).

I don't know what you made, but just to make a point here let's say it was $10/hr. (I'm not being insulting with that number, but you did make it sound like it wasn't much of a job. You probably made more, especially living in Illinois, but $10 makes simple math).

$10 x 40/hr = $400 per week.
.47 x $400 = $188

So $188 would be your normal Weekly Benefit Amount, with $4,888 being your Maximum Benefit Amount (the full 26 weeks worth if you hadn't found a job).

Under the new program several things happen...

Each state, no matter how long their plan lasted gets an additional 13 weeks that the Federal Government is covering with the bill. So in Illinois it now goes up from 26 weeks to 39 weeks.

Now that would be $188 for 39 weeks for a Maximum Benefit Amount of $7,332.

But then, the Federal Government is offering an additional 4 Months of $600 on top of the regular payouts. So while that won't cover the full 39 weeks, it covers the first 16 of them.

So if you made $10/hr @ 40 hours a week, you'd be getting $788 per week for the first 16 weeks after your claim was processed and approved, and another $188 per week for the following 26 weeks for a maximum MBA of $16,932.

That's 14.11 times the amount of the Stimulus Check you're going to get that you're throwing away if you don't bother filing for unemployment because it's too much paperwork.

I dunno man. Sounds pretty good to me. That's more money than I've made in a year since 2009.

Let me know if you need any help and I'll see what I can do for you. I know the lines are bogged down and it's going to be hard for people to get assistance. At least it seems like they're trying to automate as much as they can online in Illinois like they've done in Indiana.

Unemployment Benefits

Who would be covered by the expanded program?

The new bill would wrap in far more workers than are usually eligible for unemployment benefits, including self-employed people and part-time workers. The bottom-line: Those who are unemployed, partially unemployed or who cannot work for a wide variety of coronavirus-related reasons would be more likely to receive benefits.

How much would I receive?

It depends on your state.

Benefits would be expanded in a bid to replace the average worker’s paycheck, explained Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, a public policy research group. The average worker earns about $1,000 a week, and unemployment benefits often replace roughly 40 to 45 percent of that. The expansion would pay an extra amount to fill the gap.

Under the plan, eligible workers would get an extra $600 per week on top of their state benefit. But some states are more generous than others. According to the Century Foundation, the maximum weekly benefit in Alabama is $265, but it’s $450 in California and $681 in New Jersey.

So let’s say a worker was making $1,100 per week in New York; she’d be eligible for the maximum state unemployment benefit of $435 per week. Under the new program, she gets an additional $600 of federal pandemic unemployment compensation, for a total of $1,035, or nearly all of her original paycheck.

States have the option of providing the entire amount in one payment, or sending the extra portion separately. But it must all be done on the same weekly basis.

Are gig workers, freelancers and independent contractors covered in the bill?

Yes, self-employed people would be newly eligible for unemployment benefits.

Benefit amounts would be calculated based on previous income, using a formula from the Disaster Unemployment Assistance program, according to a congressional aide.

Self-employed workers would also be eligible for the additional $600 weekly benefit provided by the federal government.

What if I’m a part-time worker who lost their job because of a coronavirus reason, but my state doesn’t cover part-time workers. Would I still be eligible?

Yes. Part-time workers would be eligible for benefits, but the benefit amount and how long benefits would last depend on your state. They would also be eligible for the additional $600 weekly benefit.

What if I’ve been diagnosed with Covid-19 or I need to care for a family member who has?

If you’ve been diagnosed, are experiencing symptoms or are seeking a diagnosis — and you’re unemployed, partially unemployed or cannot work as a result — you would be covered. The same goes if you must care for a member of your family or household who has received a diagnosis.

What if my child’s school or day care shut down?

If you rely on a school, day care or another facility to care for a child, elderly parent or another household member so that you can work — and that facility has been shut down because of coronavirus — you would be eligible.

What if I’ve been advised by a health care provider to quarantine myself because of exposure to coronavirus? And what about broader orders to stay home?

People who must self-quarantine would be covered. The legislation also says that individuals who are unable to get to work because of a quarantine imposed as a result of the outbreak would also be eligible.

I was about to start a new job and now can’t get there because of an outbreak.

You’d be eligible for benefits. You would also be covered if you were immediately laid off from a new job and did not have a sufficient work history to qualify for benefits under normal circumstances.

I had to quit my job as a direct result of coronavirus. Would I be eligible to apply for benefits?

It depends. Let’s say your employer didn’t lay you off but you had to quit because of a quarantine recommended by a health care provider, or because your child’s day care closed and you’re the primary caregiver. Situations like that are covered.

But this provision wasn’t intended to cover people who quit (or want to quit) because they fear that continuing to work puts them at risk of contracting coronavirus, according to congressional aides.

My employer shut down my workplace because of coronavirus. Would I be eligible?

Yes. If you are unemployed, partially unemployed or unable to work because your employer closed down, you would be covered under the bill.

The breadwinner of my household has died as a result of coronavirus. I relied on that person for income, and I’m not working. Would that be covered?

Yes.

Who would the bill leave out?

Workers who are able to work from home, and those receiving paid sick leave or paid family leave would not be covered. New entrants to the work force who cannot find jobs would also be ineligible.

How long would the payments last?

Many states already provide 26 weeks of benefits, though some states have trimmed that back while others provide a sliding scale tied to unemployment levels.

The bill would provide all eligible workers with an additional 13 weeks. So participants in states with 26 weeks would be eligible for a total of 39 weeks. The total amount cannot exceed 39 weeks, but it may be shorter in certain states.

The extra $600 payment would last for up to four months, covering weeks of unemployment ending July 31.

How long would the broader program last?

Expanded coverage would be available to workers who were newly eligible for unemployment benefits for weeks starting on Jan. 27, 2020 and through Dec. 31, 2020.

My unemployment recently ran out — could I sign up again?

Yes. If you’ve exhausted your benefits, eligible workers could generally reapply. But how much you would get and for how long would depend on the state where you worked. Everyone would get at least another 13 weeks, along with the extra $600 payment.

Would this income disqualify me from any other programs?

Maybe. The additional $600 benefit would count as income when determining eligibility for means-tested programs, except for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as CHIP.

How long would I need to wait for benefits?

States have been incentivized to waive the one-week waiting period, but it’s unclear how long it would take to process claims — especially with state offices so strained by a flood of claims.

Looks like AOC wants to go down in a blaze of glory too since it was already clear that she wasn't going to be re-elected.

Funny how some media outlets point that out while others don't. I wouldn't have expected the NYT of all publications to do it, but then again it is New York, and even though far lefties all across America love her, New York hates her.

If too few lawmakers are in Washington on Friday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi would have to summon members back, putting off a vote until later Friday or Saturday.

You'd better do it now, Nancypants.

And to any representative who isn't either already in DC or sitting on a plane right now smiling for fake selfies for their Instagram followers, you better get ready to pack your bags, because sitting this bill out at home in luxury while not even bothering to vote on something that millions of people who vote for you is going to be the best anti-you-negative-campaign-ad-fodder that anybody who ever challenged an incumbent in the history of the country ever had.

Don't you just LOVE the sham reporting at CNN.

The bill passed, but look at their headline:

House passes historic $2 trillion stimulus despite objections from GOP lawmaker

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/27/politics/coronavirus-stimulus-house-vot
e/index.html

It's not mentioned until paragraph 13 that Trump gave him a Pelosi/Schumer style roasting on Twitter for it yesterday, along with a call to to his 75 Million followers to boot him out of office next election.

Quote:

Trump sharply criticized the congressman on Friday, saying in a pair of tweets that he "just wants the publicity" and should be thrown out of the Republican party.
"Looks like a third rate Grandstander named @RepThomasMassie, a Congressman from, unfortunately, a truly GREAT State, Kentucky, wants to vote against the new Save Our Workers Bill in Congress. He just wants the publicity. He can't stop it, only delay, which is both dangerous & costly," Trump tweeted.
"Workers & small businesses need money now in order to survive. Virus wasn't their fault. It is "HELL" dealing with the Dems, had to give up some stupid things in order to get the "big picture" done. 90% GREAT! WIN BACK HOUSE, but throw Massie out of Republican Party!," the President said.

AOC who was just as loud about threatening making a roll call isn't even mentioned until Paragraph 22:

Quote:

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York told CNN on Wednesday that she might force a recorded vote, but the congresswoman ultimately did not, despite her criticism of the bill.
"But I think this bill has a lot of problems with it. And I'm extraordinary concerned about what Mitch McConnell has done," she said ahead of the vote. "I've had more constituents call concerned about this bill than in support of it. It's a very hard day. It's a very, very hard day for this body."

Nobody gives a shit what you think, Cortez. If you actually had a spine, you'd stand up for what you believe in, instead of letting the Republican from Kentucky get all the negative press. Your behavior here sounds an AWFUL LOT like Second's attitude when he says "I won't be voting for Trump, but you'll make me very happy when you do because I will get even more money."

Funny... The only reason that the roll call wasn't necessary in the 11th hour was because they couldn't get a second person to Second the motion. What happened, Baby-cakes?

You are so toast in November, Cortez. Pack your bags. The last of your 15 minutes ended today, and in a grand display of selling out your "principals" in cowardice on the national stage is how you spent it.

Fucking CNN. Seriously can we downgrade them to garbage tier media along with The Enquirer and OK Magazine now?

And at the end of the day, it all worked out great. The bill got passed, and at least 216 of these horrible politicians we have running our country had to get off their asses and go to work. Somehow magically making it with time to spare, "braving" empty planes, and promoting how "awesome" they are on their Twitter accounts.

Gross. Every single thing about this is gross.

Might as well take whatever money you can since this is the beginning of a lot of financial pain for pretty much everyone in the world.

Sign up for that unemployment, JO.

And, seeing as how I'm among a very small segment of people around here who share anything about their actual lives, it only occurs to me now that others here might be out of work because of the COVID thing.

I can't be in front of you and see your screens, or do the work for you, but if you do have any questions that you can't get answers to, I will try to do my best to help out with my own knowledge and/or my GoogleFu.

Don't anybody pass up that unemployment if you qualify for it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

This is an old article I posted, but recently got an update (since it's on the first page search with "last hour" selected).

I'm not sure what the update was, but I did want to point out something specifically that was in there from the last time I looked at this article and give my thoughts on it.

Quote:

We don't know how long it would take the IRS to send out all the money, but it would likely take weeks before the first payments start going out.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Wednesday that the IRS would begin issuing payments within three weeks of the legislation being signed into law. The bill simply calls for payments to be made "as rapidly as possible."
But experts say it could take longer. In 2001, it took six weeks for the IRS to start sending out rebate checks under a new tax cut, and in 2008, it took three months after a stimulus package was signed into law.

Once again, I need to stress that CNN is just (wisely) covering their own asses here with this entire statement. They have nothing to gain as far as agendas or their own politics to entice them to lie about this, so they're erring on the side of caution and not "writing checks their asses can't cash" here.

Surely, do not expect the checks to hit your bank account on April 6th, like they were all reporting early last week. That time has come and gone because it took so long to get the bill passed.

But I think Mnuchin is also protecting his own ass here by saying "the IRS would begin issuing payments within three weeks of the legislation being signed into law". too.

I worked in this sector before. Nearly 13 years ago now, and even then they were set up to make these types of transactions nearly instantaneously. One of the big holdups when it comes to sending any money online is verifying the legitimacy of such transactions. Credit card companies, banks and processors or whoever they get involved should have very little oversight or ability to delay any of this, as the information and funds are coming straight from the Federal Government.

All we have to really worry about is somebody fucking up the massive list of people, addresses, ss#s, and bank information. (They probably will do that, and this database probably will be hacked at some point... so yay!)

Even though it took this long for the legislation to pass, they all knew that it would in some form or another, so nobody was sleeping on this and waiting on figuring out how to quickly implement it when it did pass.

I could be wrong, and don't roast me if I am, but I'm going to say that if you filed electronically on your taxes for the last 3 years and you put your bank account number and routing info on there that you will get those stimulus checks on or before the April 6th deadline that they were talking about before. In fact, even if you still send the taxes in the mail but you elect for the direct deposit, that probably won't slow down your payments at all.

The "3 weeks" stuff is for people who need to have the checks mailed out to them because they don't have any recent banking information in the system (ie: Taxes for 2018 or 2019).

I've also worked in print houses and with the postal service before. Even with automated machines, you still need quite a few workers on staff and the process of direct mail isn't fully automated. When we're talking about national mailers with potentially millions of people being recipients, that isn't going to happen overnight.

Likely, I expect them to save time by using the same checks that they print tax returns on, rather than spend time re-designing a new one, having them sent to the print shops and delivered to the address printing/sorting facilities before making it to the post office.

Oh... and if you get SSI or SSDI, they already have your info on record as well and that should be easy to get your (smaller) payout. It seems that my earlier warnings to fill in your census information probably won't play any hand in this at all. (a missed opportunity for TPTB, I think).

If you find yourself in the probably somewhat rare circumstance of not having your tax return direct deposited in a bank account and you're wondering where the money is, all I can tell you at this point is to follow the news on that.

they're saying right now that nobody will have to sign up for anything to make sure, even in that circumstance, but I can't imagine they're going to have a 100% success rate with things that need to be mailed out either. The automation of those shops is far from perfect, and checks will slip between the cracks and need to be re-mailed.

I expect there to be a website developed in the next few weeks for you to track your stimulus check status based off of sensitive information such as your SS# or your own personal history that SSA.gov and credit reporting agencies require when signing up.

Just know that you will get it, eventually... Most people will get it rather quickly and others will unfortunately have to jump through some hoops.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I think that in addition to people getting money directly, the government should put a halt on the collection of all loans for at least two months, and put a halt on rent collection for two months. People who own rentals wouldn't have to pay their mortgages so ... no rent required. No mortgage payments for homeowners. No student loan payments, no car payments, no credit card payments. No evictions, no defaults, no repossessions.

Also, a halt on the issuance of NEW credit except credit card debt (since most people pay by card, not cash).

Just have the lenders (banks, finance companies etc) eat the payments for two months.

The banks are getting ginormous bailouts from The Fed because of all of the unwise lending they did for M&As, stock buybacks, hedge funds etc. I think they should pass on those bailouts to the average person.

If the banks are eating it with the bailout money, sure...

But if landlords would have to chase that money for 2 or more months because their bills were coming due, that's not fair to them. It's hard enough for a lot of them to get their tenants to pay on time in good times.

State governments aren't about to eat the property taxes either. Not such a huge deal if you're renting out in states like Indiana, huge deal if you're renting in Illinois. The property my friend owns that he rents out there probably costs more per month in property taxes than I've ever paid somebody per month for an apartment lease. Even if he didn't have to pay the mortgage, he'd still have a very large monthly share of state property taxes piling up while his renters were living there rent free (renters who were already extreme hoarders and were destroying his house with the hoarding and the vermin they had living under literal tons of shit they don't need in the basement without him being aware of it until spring of last year).

But, I suppose you could also reduce the state income taxes and take it out of the taxes for education if you're forcing the kids to stay at home from school too.

I dunno. There isn't an easy solution to any of this. That's going to become crystal clear when this bailout bill they recently passed finally gets in full swing.

I can't wait to see how many people start (rightfully) losing their shit when they realize that while they're being forced to continue to work near-minimum wage jobs deemed "essential", their friends who were working near-minimum wage jobs that aren't get to sit at home and collect $600-$1,000 per week watching Netflix and jerking off.

Not much new in the unemployment realm to report. Nobody seems to really know any more than they did Friday. A lot more should come to light this week though.

The one thing that I did see is that I can confirm that in Indiana they will not even be asking you for 3 job searches per week. That in itself is a huge change because unlike a lot of other states that just tell you to keep a weekly record of your job searches that may or may not ever be requested from you, Indiana requires you to file every single work search for every single week you make a claim or else it gets rejected. I would venture a guess that if Indiana is taking this stance, then chances are wherever you live the work search will also be waived until the stay at home orders are lifted.

I haven't personally seen this to be the case in Illinois, but I have it from a trusted source that the same applies there as well.

Still no word in either state how they're handling people who were already unemployed and had exhausted their benefits. Anything in the news referring to this on a national level says that it will be extended by 13 weeks and that you get the $600 for 4 months from the Federal payout, but as of this time not only isn't there any mention of this extension on the Indiana site, but they specifically say that currently there is no extension and it remains at only 26 weeks. It is unclear at this time if this is just old information that hasn't been updated, and is particularly confusing since the same documentation references the Coronavirus stay at home order.

My guess is that this document was made late on Thursday or early on Friday before anything was signed into law and it hasn't been updated yet to reflect the new information.

The big question for those who had already exhausted benefits would be the discrepancy in 13 weeks for the extension and 4 months for the $600 additional payment. (With 4 months being at least 16 weeks, but more likely 17 weeks). The question being would the recipient only get the $600 for the 13 extended weeks, or would they still get it for the final 3-4 weeks even after the extended state benefits are exhausted?

If I find out more, I'll post it here.

DID YOU APPLY YET, JO?

How about you, Wishy? Haven't heard if you're still working or not.

I know they're super bogged down here and it's hard to get anybody on the phone. They've already made the request that nobody call about any COVID related stuff period, and started only taking calls and emails from individuals based off of their last names on specific days.

If you need to file, now would be the time to do it. Illinois has had far more new claims than Indiana so far, and they're only letting certain people even apply on certain days because they're having trouble keeping the website online since so many people are going to it. Make sure you and/or your husband get your claim in there before something like that happens here.

And just in case you're not already aware of it, you can make a claim if you're still working but your hours have been reduced. As long as your circumstances are such to get you approved for the minimum weekly state payout, you would be getting the additional $600/wk. for the first 4 months once approved.

You might as well take your share of the booty since the economy is fucked now and inflation is going to take another big bite out of all of our asses soon.

Looks like there will be a website if you don't get your direct deposit. They're saying it will be made in the next three weeks. It will likely be a lot sooner than that, but nobody wants to be in the position of making promises they can't keep.

Quote:

Mnuchin told reporters at the White House that there will be a web-based application for those who don't receive direct deposit. He also had a message for small businesses: "Go back and hire your workers because the government is paying you to do that."

Unclear about what that last part meant. It's easy to just make a blanket statement telling small business owners to put their employees back to work, but I don't think at this point anybody has even really defined what "essential" business is.

Don't expect anything to make any sense this week.

The largest expense is mortgage. If banks aren't collecting mortgage, the pressure is off them. Same with small businesses: the owner of the commercial real estate isn't paying mortgage, so the small businesses don't have to pay their lease. It's hard enough for a lot of them to get their tenants to pay on time in good times.

Not sure how it works in all states, but here schools are funded thru property taxes. If kids aren't going to school property taxes should be suspended

They're going on strike, at least Amazon and Instacart workers are. MY prefered grocery store (Stater Bros) gave everyone a $2/hr raise last week.
